I couldn't help myself but emal the store that is selling a few of Stevens FC pieces.

Nugg 2015-10-01 11:57

Hi I notice you have some pieces that Stevenlmz79 designed (like fc-ufo, fc-1000 and fc-187) but for much cheaper. Do you buy them from the same factory as he does? Or does he sell you low quality pieces he didn't want?

hjwufei 2015-10-01 15:41

Hi We are manufacturers, wholesalers and hope to cooperate, you are a wholesaler it? We hope we can cooperate with pleasure!

Nugg 2015-10-02 08:10

So you own the factory and produce these items for Stevenlmz79?

hjwufei 2015-10-02 08:11

Yes, we have our own factory, thank you

So, I'm still not sure who to believe. Maybe they could produce some pieces that our community wants for cheaper than Steven?

I would ask him how he's getting his designs. See what he says to where he's getting the information to make these pieces.

I still don't think Steven is anything but a middleman for a bigger manufacturer. This would also possibly explain why the youtube channel his pieces are posted to is not called Stevenlmz79 or something similar and doesn't have a description or link to their DHGate page. Also considering he doesn't really have any unique pieces that aren't FC series and the rest of the ones he sells are also all over DHGate. Also if stuff needs to get shipped from a factory to Steven then to you would also explain why his shipping isn't quite as speedy.

I am kinda considering ordering a spare diffusion pump since other sellers have it for $10 less. Will definitely report on the quality if I do.

what are the benefits of a pump perc?
I have avoided them so far because the high water lines always seem like I would drink water on a hard pull...
It has one of the smoothest, most flavorful pulls you can get. Its also just fun to use. Its practically impossible to get a drink. Buy the 710! I don't think I've seen one unsatisfied customer with that
one!

It's extremely extremely low diffusion. Go from a GB-187/D020-D matrix perc to the diffusion pump and you'll see how much more flavor the vapor has.

My only complaint is how damn loud the ball can clink around sometimes! lol

Still buying a female version when it's available

Has there been any movement on your pillar bubbler design? You mentioned in your post you aren't jazzed about the dewaar joint. Have you considered a banger hanger for that design, now that steven can make them?

@shark sandwich are we still looking @ mid november for the dp-ufo?

Short answer: My best guess now is that the dp-ufo will be available around the new year.

Long answer:

Work on the dp-ufo prototype will begin when the Coil Can prototype is finalized and in production.

The Coil Can prototype was supposed to be ready today, but I just received word (today) that it's behind schedule. This was not entirely unexpected, as the Rattle Can prototype was completed two weeks behind schedule.

The Rattle Can prototype took 5 weeks to complete, the Coil Can has already taken 6 weeks, the dp-ufo will be the most unique piece and will probably take the longest to prototype. I'd guess that the dp-ufo prototype will be completed sometime in mid to late November, and that it will be at least another month after that until it's available for sale. The Rattle Can has been in production for a month now and is not yet available for sale, and the dp-ufo will probably take even longer to produce.

I'm working on a better name for the dp-ufo. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to share.

Hey, I haven't pushed that pillar design yet, because there is a lot of stuff already beinging made that is behind schedule, so I figured I'd let his work load cool down a bit before giving him such a complex piece. The female D-Cycler should have been ready well over a month ago. IDK what's the holdup.

I was wondering myself about what all is in the production pipeline, because things do seem to be moving really slowly. I know they've been working on some difficult things like the FTK, but some other pieces coming out recently could be added to the "marvelous designs and ridiculous function" thread.

There are unconnected percs, recyclers without drains, percs with no headspace, and joints that sit below the waterline. I wonder how these pieces with critical design flaws come to be.

@weenstoned

I'm trying to make some good cheap glass happen without infringing on others designs or trade names. Aside from that concern, I like your name suggestion and how it plays on the shape. I was thinking about how vapor will travel around and around inside, and came up with "Vaporound" which I thought was alright but not great.

We have at least a month to brainstorm, and I think we can find a solid name in that time.

That's fair, I find the reference in the name at least gets across that this isn't really an original idea. A whole new name might make it appear to some that this is an idea cooked up by Chinese geniuses

I can definitely appreciate that side of things as well. Innovation is an incremental process and requires simultaneously respecting and rejecting that which has come before. A good term for this is Aufheben, which unfortunately has no English equivalent. I agree this is a good thing to consider when considering names for this thing.

Sapphire Powered Dabstronaut.
Helix-Hammer for the "dp-ufo"?

Regardless of name I would reeeally like to see a modular design on this piece.
So that one could remove the nail/dropdown AND the mouthpiece/whip attachment.

I need a puck-style rig and for travel concerns it would be nice if broke down as small as possible.

@shark sandwich, will this be modular? [/fingers crossed]

PS Anyone offer other opinions on a modular puck style piece?

Thanks for the name suggestion!

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if the nail/dropdown will be removable.

The base piece will be 8 inches across and 5 inches tall at it's highest points which are the inlet and mouthpiece joints. It won't be the smallest piece for travel, but should pack well when disassembled.

At this point only three pieces are planned to be included: the base, the neck tube, and the mouthpiece/whip end. While a drop down will not be included, the inlet joint will be high enough to accommodate a drop down if you'd like to use one.

This piece was designed to be as modular and versatile as possible. The mouthpiece can be positioned in multiple ways or used as a whip, and hydratubes can also be used. The inlet joint will be tall enough to use a drop down, and deep enough to use with the Sublimator. The base should be wide and heavy enough to provide stability for any additional percolation or vaporization equipment you choose to attach.

Edit:

@jojo monkey

I wanted to respond to your post from the "cheap high quality bubbler" thread here so information stays where it belongs.

Thanks for the name suggestion! (It was "fc-dual18dp" for anyone who didn't see it.)

Steven will be starting the prototype for this when the Twist prototype is complete, which should be any day now. That doesn't mean that it will be available soon- the production process seems to take quite a bit of time.

I actually use a pretty low water line in my FC-710 so that I get more ball action. However, even filled to the max it's nearly impossible to get a drink -- unlike most other Chinese oil rigs I've used, it's not very finicky about how much water you use, or how hard you pull.

If made, a half size version of the dp-ufo would be a puck rig 4 inches in diameter. If there's enough interest it could probably be made- but that's getting into some pretty small work and tight tolerances.

A question for people who have ordered a custom piece.

Is it wrong to feel extremely disappointed in a piece that functions pretty much as requested, but seems that the artist just did their own thing rather than following anything that you requested?

I'm not going to name the company, but I inquired about a custom piece and had it confirmed that the way it basically works is that I sketch out what I am looking for and describe anything that isn't apparent on the sketch. The artist then basically redoes the sketch as they see how it would be in reality. You then approve it or say "how about..." I was also told there would be pics along the way.

After several questions about where things were at I was sent a pic of an essentially finished product that completely ignored one of the main features in the piece, a base built in to provide stability. It was clearly in my sketch and pics of examples. Instead, they are offering to make a stand.

I was concerned about the lack of communication (I wasn't in touch directly with the artist) but thought the process just took a long time. I feel like a jerk that I look at the pics of it and think "that's not what I wanted" and am thinking of just telling them to keep the deposit and the piece.

Was your custom order with an American or a Chinese company? Either way, as @alittledabwilldoya' says, it will help us understand your situation more if you're able to post the plan and finished product pictures you recieved, and let us know what price you were quoted.

The order was with an American company. They were very friendly and the piece looks quality. I don't see any way other than to tell the story outright, especially now that this transaction has been canceled.

I love my EVO and was drooling over the prototype recycler HT's that I have seen. Knowing the odds on my actually coming across one is likely lower than my dropping dead before finding one I contacted a company about making one of my own design (basically a cobbling together of other designs.) I even had them contact VXL to make sure it was ok, which it was. I'm not trying to step on any toes.

I wondered if the reason we have not seen a production recycler HT is the non-symmetrical design of a recycler would in theory make it less stable than a fairly symmetrical design. Nobody wants to buy something to watch it tip over on its own due to the design. So I basically took a normal recycler and thought if the connection was underneath there wouldn't necessarily be a problem with there being both a base and a connection on the bottom. They wanted a sketch, so I made this crude thing up based on a regular recycler they had for sale.

I asked right from the start about all of my options, as if it's a custom piece why not get things like the perc, color & everything as I would want. I asked specifically what the perc options would be. I was informed they would check with the artist.

I asked how the process works. Does the artist now come up with a design that I approve, then a price agreed upon, deposit, blowing, progress pics... I was told that's how the process works. Before this I had agreed on an estimate of $250-$300, but was never given an actual price.

For color, I asked for a swirling design, "dark blue with some purple, yellow, gray... Something rainbowy like the coloring on the attached pic." (Note: I'm not attaching the pic I gave them) I indicated I wanted it around the base, on the mouthpiece and on the round "shield" which I wanted incorporated into the water return, if possible. Also I indicated I wanted some metallic shine in the color, if possible.

11 days later I write to ask how things are coming along. Another 10 days pass before I hear back telling me "good news!" that it can be done similar and with the colors I requested. This is when I was given the estimate and sent them a deposit. So far, so good. I'm not going nuts over time. I just wanted to know where things were at. I'm fine with quality taking a bit longer to get it right.

I completely take the blame for assuming that there would be a bit of communication asking if I was happy with it, which options I wanted, assuming that there would be some sort of artist rendering (which I was told would be coming) that I could approve and/or make change suggestions.

8 days later I had not hear anything so I asked where things were at. I was told they had been delayed while waiting for a shipment of my color. Ok! I replied that I had not been updated on the perc options and wanted to know if the artist could do a vortex perc. The response a couple days later was the promised pic showing the progress. I was shocked that it essentially looked finished. The artist was not comfortable with trying to change the perc (why was it to this point when not a single thing I had asked about in regard to options had been discussed?)

I was seriously wondering what needed to be done to it to complete it. I found out 3 days later when I received the completed pic, which was the same as the previous with one of the shields just tacked on to it instead of incorporated into it (which looks horrible and ruins the lines of what is an attractive piece, in my opinion.)

glass_finished.jpg

I really hated complaining about it, but the base isn't anything like I asked for and specifically designed. I was given the option of them basically including a hydrafoot (I doubt it could sit on a standard 'foot without tipping, but what do I know?) and them removing the shield... with the warning that it could scar the piece.

I felt horrible complaining about it and asked what the total would be. They said $250, taking into consideration that I was less than thrilled. I responded, admitting that I had considered backing out and was concerned about how any scarring on the piece would affect my ability to resell it, as I honestly didn't care if it was ever on my shelf (the main feature of it being able to stand on its own was completely ignored, as was my question regarding perc options... and the color was nothing like I asked for. Where is the dark blue/purple metallic?)

Overall I am just sick. I feel like a major league jerk for complaining about someone's work not being what I wanted, as I don't know enough about glass blowing to know if what I wanted is at all possible... despite my basing every request on actual pieces that exist.

But whatever I guess. My dream is dead. I highly doubt I'll try to order another, as why repeat a major mistake?

If you're interested in the piece, PM me and I can try to hook you up with them. It's not a bad looking piece. It's just not what I was designed. Frankly, if I saw it on a shelf I don't think I would buy it unless it was a great deal. I debated whether or not to publicly post the pic of the completed piece as it's not mine to do so with, but if it helps it find a home...
