I anyone else getting that chemical taste and smell? Seriously, how come there aren't more complaints about this? It is so strong, I could smell it through the shrink wrap on my replacement. I think it is coming from the cover because that is where the smell seems strongest other than the box itself. It looks like cheap metal plating or painted on metallic paint.

Yeah, I already had to replace my first one out of the box. This one came from a different area too. I am furious. I feel like I wasted over 300 dollars on something that I can't even use and their support won't give me any answers.

I've had nine or ten different FFs since December 2013. None of them had any chemical smell whatsoever. Moreover, in nearly two years of reading this thread daily I don't recall hearing a single story of this odor issue, prior to yours. So that may explain why there aren't more complaints....none of us, so far, have experienced this problem.

Am I reading right that you've had TWO FFs from different sources with the same issue? Because if so...that is pretty fucking weird. :hmm:

As for support, call them and select the "support" prompt on the recording. I'm sure they'll be happy to discuss this with you and give you some specific help.

I read a few posts in this thread and elsewhere that were disregarded as unusual. One review about a similar taste that was attributed to it just being new. http://www.vaporizers.com/products/firefly-vaporizer "Unfortunately, my first impression of using the Firefly was not good. I tried vaping a few puffs with an empty chamber, and I got a metallic, chemical-like taste in my mouth. I guess that is to be expected for a factory new, unbroken in vape, but still necessary to mention that."

The one that stuck with me was in this thread specifically.
The FF has chrome plated steel not stainless steel coating. They are similar but not the same.

Chromium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks, animals, plants, soil, and in volcanic dust and gases. Chromium is present in the environment in several different forms. The most common forms are chromium(0), trivalent [or chromium(III)], and hexavalent [or chromium(VI)]. Chromium(III) occurs naturally in the environment and is an essential nutrient required by the human body to promote the action of insulin in body tissues so that sugar, protein, and fat can be used by the body. Chromium(VI) and chromium(0) are generally produced by industrial processes. No known taste or odor is associated with chromium compounds. The metal chromium, which is the chromium(0) form, is a steel-gray solid with a high melting point. It is used mainly for making steel and other alloys. The naturally occurring mineral chromite in the chromium(III) form is used as brick lining for high-temperature industrial furnaces, for making metals and alloys (mixtures of metals), and chemical compounds. Chromium compounds, mostly in chromium(III) and chromium(VI) forms, produced by the chemical industry are used for chrome plating, the manufacture of dyes and pigments, leather tanning, and wood preserving. Smaller amounts are used in drilling muds, rust and corrosion inhibitors, textiles, and toner for copying machines.

I'm trying to figure out why some folks are tasting this plating. When done properly there is no smell or taste. My FF did smell when new from the heating chamber and still smells a bit to this day after cleaning. Maybe this is the taste of 400°. But the FF's plating should not taste or smell, ask their customer service.

Also, my first unit was sent from Florida while my replacement was sent from Washington. Both have an extremely strong smell. I won't even use the second one it's too strong.

I've also talked to customer support about the first one and they had me return it for the current replacement. That is when they actually answer the phone. It's the weekend so I will be getting no support from them anyway and I have a work trip on monday.

This is what is so infuriating, I just got back from a long and stressful trip and was hoping I could relax with my new toy.

Are you sure you aren't just noticing the odor of the box etc? This second FF itself is definitely throwing odor from the lid? And while you use it? (If you haven't used the new one yet, maybe it's worth at least heating it up to see what's going on with it, if you're going to return it anyway.)

I literally have never smelled or tasted anything odd or funny about any of the many FFs I've had. Seems really odd to me, especially since you've gotten two from them directly. Maybe you are sensitive to some materials that most of us aren't bothered by? I would say that if you get a third one with the same problem, it might be time to move on to a different vape. But in any case, I've never noticed anything remotely like what you describe.

There is a strong smell coming from the box but it's also in the cover like one stained the other. I can't tell where the smell is coming from but it's strong enough that I assume any owner would recognize it and it's alarming that nobody is even noticing. I feel safer smoking; not to complain, but to give you a sense of scale on how strong it is.

Also, yes I did heat it up. I was dry puffing from it and even just running the heater in hopes I could cook away whatever it was. On both vaporizers, the main unit itself began to smell fine, but the lid is just overpowering.

I wanted to play it safe and buy it directly from the website.
I'm bothered by the fact that the cover does not look like stainless steel. It looks like plating. I don't know whether or not it's related but the covers smelled worse than the units.

I guess I could add that the serial numbers are only the last 3 digits different. Maybe it's the batch?

So I just purchased a firefly today and I have to say, after adjusting to it I'm amazed. It's powerfull and portable enough that if you're stealthy you can bring it anywhere.

Now my only complaints are that it TASTES SO GOOD. I use it I get the munchies and I vape more just for the taste.

Other than me joking around any advice for and FF beginner and should I worry about my device feeling too hot. Just after short use with my FF it become pretty hot. (10 minutes of use for it to get hot)

Welcome to FC and the FF club!:)

For advice, take a spin through the Best of FF thread....it's an edited version of this thread with a focus on info-heavy technique posts. Sounds like you got off to a good start though. As for heat, yes, it can get pretty warm when fully fired up after a long session. Try setting it briefly on a glass surface and the heat will drain right out of it. Good luck and enjoy your FF!

I have had the Firefly for over a year, and now within weeks, the battery and the 3 extras I have bought ( all the old 750) have stopped working. Can the FF be used with just the charger, or do I need a working battery in there as well?
Thanks

Interesting little teaser post from FF on Facebook.

"Sasha has been hard at work today! Here is a behind the scenes look at his kitchen table."

I asked if any of these parts relate to the FF2, but unlike some companies, FF won't let on till they have something concrete to say. :p

Those are all FF1 parts.

Mine didn't smell bad, but the foam insulator left faint residue on the top plate. Is the foam on the lid smelly? And yes, the lid seems to be plated as opposed to SS. Could be mistaken though.

Just picked up a used Firefly and it doesn't work well. I think it needs a new battery.

Where's the best place to get one?

Thanks!

I have the new battery!
It does make your cannabis taste great!

I'm putting it back in rotation,
However I forgot what position to switch it to while charging?

Currently the switch is towards the mouth piece while charging?

Is that correct?

If you're holding it straight up, with the window on top, the down position = off

It actually doesn't matter...it'll charge the same whether toggled on or off. The blue charging light pulses in either position.

I've had the ff for about two months. I got sure like it. VP is excellent. It's in repair now, for battery and I believe shut down system was not working. Stealth wise I hold it down especially when bike riding. But it seems to work best when I am in the home not when walking or biking. I realty hate smoke. Just going to make edibles till it returns. Tried smoke last night, wasn't good. I also messed up the oring I thought it was resin, it moved a little like a small hump in there. Not sure if that affects the temp.

The o-ring(s) can get slippery if they come into contact with iso, and will pop out a bit and become fragile. But if you wait until it dries out a bit you can carefully tuck them back in without too much trouble
