Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

Lots of hand finishing work in the shop today.



Filing the heads off of the brass screws. These were then lightly sanded, leaving a bit of texture to make them look like old rivets. I use this kraft paper protector to keep the steel from getting scratched if I slip up.



Sanding the interior smooth.



Nice and shiny inside! I like the contrast between the bare steel and the patina on the outside.



I spent the rest of the day hand sanding, shaping, and fitting all of the stems.

Each Okin has it's own character, slight differences in grain, colour, and shape. I really like how the patinas came out! There are lots of neat shades of blue, purple, brown, and grey.



The Okins are done, and soon the boxes will be as well!

Looking damn good, as usual. Still can't wait to get ahold of a few of these.

Now........if I can only get to my next email notice in time to order, before full up next time.

Ah, just the nature of my work. Got to deal with it. Hopefully I will have better luck with timing next time. (And, have a cell signal wherever I may be at the moment!)

Almost too beautiful to look away

Apologies for not reading through the whole thread, but how will Okin's be available in the future? I get the impression that this production run is all spoken for, but I just love the design and craftsmanship and I just have to get my hands on one as soon as I get the chance.

Every picture you post is breathtaking, The photos are at the same level of artistry as the Okins themselves!

Have you ever seen Dan's other creations?? My friends and me can spent HOURS looking at his old blog posts and drooling over these impossible creations. Truly magnificent craftsmanship and ideas.

Neat little box sanding jig.



Just a simple flat rim box and sandpaper holder.



It flattens the box sides to the right height and also gives the entire box a taper of about 5 thousands of an inch from end to end (needed for the slip cover).







Making the slip covers out of strips of Kraft card stock. I used waterproof glue on these as well.



The first folds are the most important. If they are crooked...by the time you get to the end of the strip of card stock...you'll be way off.



Nice crisp folds for the inside corners.



Using a...uhh..presser stick..thing.. to flatten the edges.





This is the first strip wrapped. I wrap each box with two strips of card stock.



Layin' down the glue. I glue one face at a time, flatten, apply pressure, then repeat.



This rounded edge applies pressure evenly over the entire face as I turn the box and make a new fold, squeegeeing out any excess glue and eliminating the chance of air bubbles. I apply pressure against the corners as I round them over, this keeps them tight and crisp.



The wrap complete.



As the glue dries the kraft card stock will shrink onto the wooden box and conform perfectly to it's shape. Tomorrow the ends will be trimmed flush and then I can apply a finish to the boxes and paint! I'm really excited to see how all the colours turn out!

Thanks!

I put the same details and maintain the same level of quality that go into my $1000+ pipes. The fact that I make everything from scratch, have almost no overhead, and now...all of the dedicated tooling/jigs..helps to make that pricepoint possible. Though.. I would still say it's a steal! haha.

I need to figure out a way to print out these posts properly (perhaps a series of screenshots onto archival stock, mounted in an old-timey photo album), as an accompaniment to this one of a kind luxury vape.

Im saving all the production photos to keep with my Okin. I can see this thing on Antiques Roadshow a few years down the line. Beautiful. Just remember to keep the box.....haha.

Provenance and history is everything

I will be making a mega-album on Imgur with all of the production images when this batch is done.

I'll load little Niko for friends of a certain disposition, and pass it to them along with a bound book beautifully detailing the loving creation of the functional artwork they are about to experience

Butane or torch powered with this level of craftmanship would be awesome.

I was thinking...way in the future, after I've had my fill of making Okins.. that a desktop vape, powered by a flame would be really neat to design. Something with a soft quiet yellow flame, a clean burning liquid fuel, heat exchange separating chamber from combustion exhaust.

Wood.. stone.. iron.. glass or crystal, heavy, grounded, earthy... glowing all elemental like.

Sort of like an analog log vape, kinda..

Just whispers in my mind right now.

Back to the Okin!

I've painted the boxes, turned out awesome, I love all of the colours chosen! I will be giving them a few coats of linseed oil, which will darken the colours slightly.

Here is some beautiful marigold yellow being mixed. The paint comes in powder form.



Lexington green, after second coat. Each box gets 3-4 coats, depending on the colour.









There was one other box which was painted Bayberry green... more photos of the finished boxes tomorrow!

have you thought about a print-on-demand photo book at amazon? it could become a collector's item.

I've been so distracted by all the beautiful pictures that I kind of forgot this is a functioning vape thread! So speaking of, how are all you beta testers doing with your Okin's? Just wondering if you've all got the hang of it with some more testing time

I got my technique down quite a while ago, but there definitely was a learning curve involved. Since the beta testing has been completed, I have spent more time with my daily drivers and testing out a new device, however I do break out the Okin when the urge comes (and it does come), but it's more of a treat these days and not a daily thing.

I can't wait to hear what you guys think of the production models!
