Discontinued Zion vaporizer

Hey @Jherst :)

If you've got a couple of those laying around & they still take and hold a charge, then they should be good to go in the Zion.

They are the slightly lower 2500mAH, as opposed to RBT's current 2900mAH LG's, but they will still certainly do the trick.

A worthy find imo

Happy Saturdaze y'all!

Awesome thanks for the info. I actually salvaged them from a counterfeit vape I was just sold so they should be good. Held a charge long and put out juice before I disassembled it.

I am not a battery expert, but it is my understanding that we should be using matched pairs with the Zion so that the batteries discharge together and don't interact with one another. I have my batteries numbered so I always use the same 2 together. That should enhance both battery life and battery safety.

I don't know how critical that is, just that it is recommended. I defer to those who are expert.

Just wondering, are your batteries they sent you 2900mAH? Just from their website description:

4 RBT 3.7 Volt Lithium Ion Rechargeable Batteries

18650

2500 MAH

35A

High discharge

Is that wrongly described then?

Yes that is a mistake. The LGs are 2900, the eventual Samsungs will be 2500 I believe

As long as the voltages between the pair are not vastly different I don't think there should be a problem.

If one of a pair of batteries was maxing out at a far lower voltage than the other then this would not be a suitable pair to use in your Zion.

@Jherst - it would certainly be handy to get a reading of their voltages at full charge with a meter if possible - just to check on their condition.

Manufacturer
Zion Interface Drawing

I've set up a drawing for anyone wishing to work with 3rd party accessory makers. This should be enough information to make sure of a proper fit. If you find you need a dimension not shown, just give a holler.

your pal,

All,

There have been some late breaking dimensional changes due to manufacturing operation optimization so the the first 50 - 70 units will be slightly wider than the next 200. The attached link is more than likely accurate to the first set of Zion's.

There has been a great deal of learning in the manufacturing process so slight changes will continue to be made as processes refine. The Beta Team will receive th first 10 units for validation so this may also lead to minor tweaks.

It's really amazing to watch the design find it's way to perfection. If all goes well with the CNC machining of the cap, heater and mouthpiece holes we should begin our first Zion assembly by late next week. I know, I know... Is it October yet?

If you have two of the same cells, one old and one new, issues can still develop.
The older cell will most likely have a higher internal resistance then the new. The older cell will also have lost some of it's capacity.

This will eventually result in one cell dropping in voltage faster than the other. This becomes a problem once one gets too far from the other, one cell can try to charge the other resulting in heat and possible venting. (there won't be a charger to control the amperage)

It is always proper safety to use paired cells (they always get used and charged together.) They should be identical batteries purchased at the same time and place.

I have a Grasshopper on the way with an est October ship date. They keep pushing the dates back and this vape caught my eye. For one I need to replace my solo that I've had for a few years, and for another I don't know when I will get my Grasshopper. I'll be using this 50% of the time with water and mostly at home. Question is, will I still want to use this vape when my grasshopper comes? What does this do that the Grasshopper doesn't? I don't want to buy something that wont be getting any usage because my other vape does it the same or is more convenient. Anyone have both that could give me some advice?

Thanks,

I would bet that every other unit RBT sends out isn't going to malfunction so there's that. You won't have to use a silicone condom for extended use, you won't have to switch batteries constantly because it drains them so fast, and I haven't tried either but just from looking at the designs I would say the vapor is probably much smoother from the Zion.

I've also got a GH ordered and expect to pretty much ONLY use it when going places you wouldn't/couldn't normally take a vaporizer. I don't see the GH working out as a hardcore daily driver for a super super long time. I hope I'm wrong though.

Thanks,

Every vape is different, especially various convection units.

For one thing, they have completely different heaters and the Zion is open loop, more manual and capable of more power overall (more than you need even). In general it utilizes a simpler design so super durable with flaws less likely as well, there's just less regulation.

It also has far better battery life, and has a handbuilt feel vs GH new age polish. It doesn't get hot like Hopper on the body, can be sessioned as well as hit on demand just as well (if not better), probably more versatile overall despite its larger size. More like a crafted portable desktop without compromise

It has a longer vapor path so smoother dry with glass so potentially twice as tasty vs GH, but easy to hook up to 14 or 18mm glass like Hopper is with 14mm... So kind of a draw glass wise maybe? Hard to say for sure

Oh my! Such debate! :)
This becomes a problem once one gets too far from the other
Thank you for the reiteration. This is what I said.

@Jherst's batteries both came from the same device & so I would think they are likely the same age.

It is always prudent to be cautious with battery tech but armed with a meter it is not that difficult to negate any potential issues imo.

@vapen00b & @cybrguy - my batteries from RBT state 2900mAH on the label. I will post a pic when I am home so you can see for yourself . . .

People out in the real world will be using all sorts of mismatched batteries . . . . of that I am quite sure . . . .

The Zion is not something you can put in your shirt pocket, or something meant for stealth. There is a single battery version coming, but this is not it. My only knowledge of the GH is from reading it's thread but I don't think it is meant to be your main around the house vape, tho I'm sure you will be ABLE to use it that way if that is all you have.
The Zion is an easy to use, very powerful, untethered battery powered vape that can easily be taken out of the house when stealth is not required but is best suited for the coffee table, garden/yard or desk and pairs well with almost any water tool.

Ahhh... No worries. You got different batteries from RBT than I did. This is all mine say on them. The 2 is me... ;)

I usually let it heat about 10 seconds before I take my first hit. No waiting for second hit if I take it soon after.

I really can't over express how much I like this vape. I know it may seem to some that the beta testers are over promoting this vape, and I have to say we are not. Speaking for myself, at least, I just really enjoy it.

Some have recommended that method. It depends a little on strain. If I have something tasty I will take a few hits at low temp (voltage), 10 or 20% on the dial. I don't preheat for that.
If it is not especially tasty or I'm just ready to go I will go right to 75%, heat about 10 sec and start hitting it. The screen/bowl I usually use holds about .1g and I can usually finish it in about 3 big hits (if I want), with a stir in between. I can, of course, take it slower.
