Discontinued Zion vaporizer

First official post on FC! How's everyone doing? My names Steven and glad to say I'm aboard the RBT zion train . having had a few vaporizers (mflb, pax, cloud evo (got rid of ) and also trying out the storz and bickel infamous crafty I've decided to go a more simplistic route opting to cancel my grasshopper pre-order, pick up this behemoth of a toy along with the 18mm single 18650 unregulated for my stealth needs (any name for this one by the way?). I've been hooked on this thing ever since I found out about it a few days ago and pretty much read the whole entire thread . Came just in time to get my pre-order in and excited to see what this baby can do! Thanks for all the hard work you beta testers put in and the man who created this monster, I look forward to seeing what else this company has in store but for now it's the waiting game

Well, no, I think OGB's standard joint is the ISO, not the US standard. The first M2M's I ordered from him came in the ISO standard and did not fit. Mike was GREAT about resolving that problem as I described in his thread, but the ones that came without a special request came in the wrong size for the Zion. So you DO need to tell him you are using your glass in the Zion or to use the US joint. It's not a problem as long as he knows.

BTW, the difference in the 2 joints is only the length. The taper is the same, and that is why the US male will work fine in an ISO female. The US male is 4mm shorter than the ISO male. The only reason this is a problem for the Zion is that the Zion joint terminates at the heater screen and a joint too long sticks out and may not seal.

Cybr, thanks for making this clear! I naively assumed that OGB were making US standard stuff since it's a US company.. Am from the EU and ISO is pretty common over here with all kinds of things. Already contacted Mike about using it with the Zion so I guess it's gonna fit nicely by nature then. But I will definitely message him again now that I know better. Thanks again!

@Healthierlifestyle welcome aboard! Good choices you made. One more in our family!

I'm sure you're fine. Due to my experience with him he knows whats up, so as long as he knows you are getting it for the Zion he is sure to use the right joint.

And, btw, I want to stroke him again (don't) for his cooperation and kindness in resolving my issue. Some vendors might not have gone out of their way to make it right, and Mike certainly did even tho he had done nothing wrong. That is worth a LOT to me.

Welcome to The Cult of Zion @Healthierlifestyle, we are happy to have you as a lifetime customer!

Also I see we've topped 100 pages of good vibes! Outstanding!!

Now it's storytime!

Gather around, friends, and I'll tell you a little about RBT's humble beginnings as seen from this designers point of view. Hope I still have a job after this, har har!

Someone posted a little ways back something to the effect of ...seems like RBT listened to everyone's gripes about vaporizers and invented one to address them all...or somesuch. Props to that guy, I hope they will forgive my laziness for not quoting them directly. They don't know how right they were.

RBT is a colleague from one of my past lives and we've stayed in touch more or less, mostly less if I'm being honest but as we all know, that's life when people part company, but still enough to share jokes, major life events, and whatnot. We hooked up for a ski trip once for a score and to check out his "cool new vape" which was that Vapir unit shaped like a capital "D", but he forgot the little pucks that hold the shiz.

Hard to imagine, right?

Anyway, I had already formed my opinion of 'vaping' by that point and knew it had never fully cut it for me as a long time combustor, so it didn't break my heart. I did go out and get one of those units and as usual, it didn't quite cut it for me not to mention it seemed to blow more vapor out its seams than into the bag. Meh, back to the pipe collection.

A couple months shy of a year ago he calls me up all mad scientist and heyyyy buddyyy, can I come visit, I have a project that I could use your help on. He briefly described to me how he's completely fed up with existing vaporizer technology, and got so sick of all the BS and crap engineering that he decided to make something that actually worked, and so he engineers up with this brilliant heater system. I think he was even just thinking 'one off' in the beginning, it was just so he and his friends would have a vaporizer that functions as it ought to, YOU BET! Come on over! (bring your good shit) I'm always down for a nice hangout and helping my buds with projects.

So we're hanging out with some real good stuff, looking over his sketches and familiarizing me with the concept and where he's at with the design and where he'd like it to go, the usual project team design kick off kind of discussion, and he smiles and says 'I brought a prototype!' and proceeds to pull out some cube shaped box made of wood and drywall, taped together or maybe he was just balancing all the pieces. He has mad skills at holding several objects all at once and performing dexterous acts with them, it's quite amazing to watch. I won't be getting back to that.

So here he is with this wirey, screeny, naily drywall box with a couple openings looking all of a Smurf sized glory hole, hooks a battery up to it and proceeds to blow a couple meager clouds before catching some shit on fire in my bedroom. Wowwwww! Neeeeaaaat! Yeah, he could use a little help. A lot of help. Not talking about the project anymore. I digress...

Over the next few weeks I would cad up the latest concept, and every time we'd chat he'd have gone off in another direction and I'd be starting over. It's like herding kittens working with RBT. GENIUS kittens, though.

But the design had not yet found it's formula. That happened a little before @lwien started this thread. We were using cut borosilicate glass and thinking ceramic, but had not yet discovered how to work the tech into standard 'round' glass. I'm not sure what sparked that brilliant step in the evolution of Zion, that is between the universe and @RastaBuddhaTao , but whatever it was, that was the moment Zion was born.

A couple weeks after that we had the "2x4" design packaged which is still really the same packaging as today, less the lid and the nice round corners. Shortly into the detail design @KeroZen drew a wireframe 'lid' on one of our cad renderings, and a couple pre-alpha testers had also commented how nice a lid would be, and this is how the Zion got it's lid.

Add several months of FC community ideas and involvement, extremely valuable input from our insane beta test crew, lots of work to reduce the manufacturing steps required to produce, hundreds of hours of grueling old fashioned testing (i'm so hungry) and that form has been gently refined into what we see today as the first production Zions get ready to come to life.

and thanks to my good friend and his relentless pursuit of vapor perfection I haven't combusted for more than six months, smoking stopped cutting it for me the first time I tried my prototype and that, dear friends, is my Story of Zion.

Great story, TKW. Zion is the result of Kismet, synchronicity, and lucky happenstance to put you 2 guys together to create an OUTSTANDING device that has already made many people who were smokers into happy vapers. And a bunch of us have been fortunate enough to arrive at the right time to help with ideas and testing which is seriously cool and fun for us. AND, its not just us beta testers. You guys, the users, have also been instrumental in this regard.

Almost an idea crowdsourced project. Everybody is a factor. So we should all get a hand, but more importantly, we should all get A ZION!!!! :)

I couldn't agree more, and I truly should have paid more homage to the FC community in my story and why is almost it's own story!

To be honest, when RBT decided to do this whole project 'transparent' style here at FC, I had my reservations. I was imagining a whacked out fuster cluck of direction, but it quickly proved to be exactly the opposite. I cannot stress enough how easy it was to design shit this way, it's like autopilot. 'The Right' design just naturally distills from the sum of the communities input.

Want-to-have vs need-to-have features VERY QUICKLY found their place on the right list, and it was not always how RBT and I thought it would go. The slightest hint of deviation from what the FC community i.e. 'the market' really wanted brought near instantaneous and valuable feedback to the design team. You ever drift onto those side cuts on the edge of the road? EXACTLY like that! I don't know why all companies don't do it this way, it speeds up the process tremendously! Somebody should do a paper on it or something.

While I'm waiting for my Zion to come I figured I should knock everything out that I wanted for it. I have 2 pairs of Sony vtc 5's and an I4 charger with me already. In regards to using a water piece with this baby I decided I wanted something simple so I went with the pinnacle pro glass from dh gate along with picking up a 18mm to 14mm male adapter. Is there anything else I need to pick up to have full use of my Zion? Screens?
http://m.dhgate.com/product/pinnacle-pro-glass-smoking-water-pipe-vaporblunt/184494946.html#pd-019

Was originally planning on using this piece with the grasshopper but I like the zion better

Many have had good luck with a screen system called ELB. Stands for easy load bowl I think. They're a bit spendy, but worth it IMO. This would go in the 18-14 adapter. Most seem to prefer the stock RBT screens most of the time though, if it fits the piece.

The beta team will be along with a lot of good advice on what pairs well with the Zion too, I'm sure.

Thanks Dude, hey check this out, here's some deep dive from the archive, it's an early concept, back from when we were still trying to package it in a rectangular format. It's break action, like a shotgun. One of the many that didn't make it off the drawing board. Still kinda neat though:

If there is such thing as a proto-Zion it's this ghastly beast I found RBT curled up with one foggy morning. It featured a steel ring plumber taped to an e-cig mod box to hold the heater. Bare wires all over the place, but with a punch like Tyson.

This might be pushing the boundary on transparency but I wanted you to see one of our trade secret processes in action. This is an extremely professional process but here at RBT we spare no expense. I have to admit, it sounded a little strange when the Beta Team mentioned it but it truly does improve the quality of the vapor.

Hey @Jherst :)

If you've got a couple of those laying around & they still take and hold a charge, then they should be good to go in the Zion.

They are the slightly lower 2500mAH, as opposed to RBT's current 2900mAH LG's, but they will still certainly do the trick.

A worthy find imo

Happy Saturdaze y'all!
