My original response of mini Santa Cruz Shredder was based on the assumption that you meant something you could keep in your pocket.
If you meant portable but not so portable that it needs to be comfortable in your pocket, then I'd go with a small SCS 3-piece or 4-piece.
SCS does not offer 3-piece in mini (but surely will eventually).

I have removed the screen section from my mini 4 piece and use it as a makeshift 3 piece.
I prefer the size and I couldn't wait for the pollen to collect.
The new models also have the thumb scoop concave bottom section.

I use a dedicated electric coffee grinder most of the time and am very happy with it. Recently however I purchased a manual herb grinder and a finishing grinder for comparison of the two processes. To this point I have observed that the electric grinder is faster and easier but the MFLB finishing grinder produces a finer grind. The relevance of that result I suspect is dependant on the vape one uses. Sadly, I am also on a tolerance break so I can't do the side by side comparison of the grinds which is really what I want to do now. All in the name of science of course, no really it is.

I thought that's what it might be, but it's so hard to tell with the lighting in the picture. I have a gun metal SCS, but the one in your picture just doesn't look like mine, so I wasn't sure. I'm sure it's the lighting.

Glossy gun metal. Mine looks just like yours, except mine is large.
If anyone has matte gun metal, please share a picture (if that's even an available color).
EDIT: Oh, I see that you said yours is matte. Looks glossy to me. I'm going to have to inspect your picture (which I've seen a hundred times) a little closer.

Hey guys.. just a quick question. I recently bought a matt green SCS and ever since I started grinding upside down it appears as if it's getting dirtier more quickly.. especially on the outer rim of the top teeth piece and the inside rim of the lower teeth piece. Has anyone else noticed this as well or am I just crazy?
I am so OCD about keeping this SCS clean before and after each use and I was wondering what you guys thought of my cleaning pattern. I guess I'm just paranoid because I had to clean my plastic S & B two piece grinder every 7 days or so or else I couldn't twist it. Am I being too careful? Please let me know after reading this:
Before I even begin I take my brush (the one that came with my Plenty Vape) and brush out the top teeth section and around the sides into the bottom teeth section. Then I brush out the bottom tooth section into the holes. I then break up my herb into small enough pieces to fit inside the center circle of teeth on the top piece. Then I take the bottom teeth piece and slowly let the magnet pull the pieces together while holding upside down and grinding a few turns back and forth. After that, I turn it right side up and give the top of the grinder a few nice "palm slaps" in order to get everything to fall through to the herb chamber. After all this I open it up again and brush out the top teeth piece into the bottom teeth peice and then I brush out the bottom teeth piece through the holes and into the herb chamber below. Then I'll take my dab tool (I don't use it anymore for anything but this as anyone who has read my thread in the Concentrates section already knows lol) and slowly scoop and pour what I can into my Plenty herb chamber. Then I take the brush and lightly brush out the entire herb chamber and screen the finely ground spec that is left into my Plenty herb chamber. Finally.... before I screw anything back together.. I take that brush and brush out all the threads and make sure that there is no fine residue on the threads before screwing everything back together!
Do you guys think I'm going too far in order to take care of and keep my SCS clean? Also how exactly do I clean it? I have a Matte Finish Green one and I would be so upset if my 91 Iso did anything to discolor it. I know I could probably search through this entire thread and find the answer but I simply don't have the time.
I'm currently experimenting with grinding upside down, rightside up and even grinding upside down without the bottom toothed piece attached to the herb chamber. Is it just my imagination that there has been more build up on the outer lip of the top teeth piece and the inner lip of the bottom tooth piece when I grind upside down or is the buildup really the the same regardless if I grind rightside up or upside down?
It's still a very smooth turn but I do feel a tad bit of friction. I would assume because this is a premium Aluminum grinder that it would never lock up like a plastic two piece would but I still want to clean this thing soon well before I see any more build up on those outer and inner lips of the grinding chamber.
I really need some thought provoking "FC Input" from you SCS fans out there! Thanks fellas!

Yeah. That's why I started loading the lid, then grinding upside down, before flipping and turning the lid some more to assist the herbs through the holes. The way I see it, you're more likely to get the sides gunked up if you grind sideways or load the bottom teeth of an SCS.
(I haven't done it this way recently.)
If you don't already have Grinder Grease, buy some from puffitup.
If you don't have Grinder Grease, use a cotton swab or a cotton ball to apply alcohol to the male edge of the lid. That should make it feel quite a bit better instantly, without requiring the labor of a full cleaning session.

Socks: The top of the grinder is definitely always going to get somewhat dirty when using it upside down and you may as well (imo) keep brushing that out after a grind. I think I would eliminate the step where you brush the grinder before you start, however. That seems a bit redundant since it seems like you clean it up pretty good after you use it.
As for cleaning, Iso and maybe a little salt if it's gunky (doesn't sound like that would happen to you, though) with a toothbrush work very well for me (so well that I need to remember just how easy it was so I can just keep the thing clean). I don't think this should have any negative effect on the colored finish.

I only use ISO to clean a few times a year.
For keeping your kief screen clean, try using a brush. I use my MFLB brush, but many semi-stiff paint and hobby brushes will do the trick. Just a gentle brushing on both sides of the screen is all you need. The brush is also nice for a quick clean-up on other areas.

@Socks And Sandals post a pic matte green is sick. I wanted green or blue but all was in stock was purple for the lrg. Yes grinding upsidedown will get dirtier a lot faster.

My Compton 4-Piece grinder has arrived, and I LIKE IT ...A LOT!!! Built like a jeweled tank, polished to a flawless finish, colored a beautiful anodized blue, parts fit like DNA to a helix and screw/unscrew with ease (I always apply Chapstick to the threads to avoid threadlock), grind is an even fine/medium fine (diamond teeth are SHARP), turn-grip grooves are very ergonomically effective, kief screen is the perfect fineness and super easy to remove with the screen removal tool provided, kief catch at bottom is easy to empty & clean i.e., smooth/curved bottom corners, Teflon grade O-rings, turn-lid magnet is very strong! 9.8/10 ...well, I always allow room for improvement, but I'm hard-pressed to identify any here.

I'm curious about the loading area, is it needed, or is the next best thing?
The loading area for me is a plus. I always break down buds into smaller chunks first and deposit the majority of the broken pieces into the loading area ...this enables the initial turns to ease the bud parts into the grinding teeth, as opposed to struggling with trying to cut through all the bud at once on the first twist. I really like this grinder ...superior quality shines through.

Below here is my SCS method for usage. Notice how I take the disadvantage you mentioned earlier and turn it into a feature.

I go right side up until my 4pc SCS is full, then I sometimes 2nd grind upside-down and fine. Like your method.
Yea, I do all that after I believe everything has fallen into the chamber of my 4pc SCS. Then I tip it upside down. The SCS I own has less holes, So the holes actually do more work separating the materials in this way. Kinda like a pepper mill. I regrind just before It is ready for use.
Now, If I want to go ultra fine, I do all that and set my SCS right side up again. Take of the top grinder lid off and tamp it on say a coffee filter. Put the top back on upside down, do a couple more turns, then lift the lid and tamp a second time. Only the lightest of particles will stick to the top of the lid when it is being taken off.
As far as cleaning. mostly toothpicks or a wooden skewer for the tight corners. I swear there is more keif collected there than in the actual catcher. I use the scraper tool that comes with the SCS or a zip tie formed into a loop to scrape the walls. ISO is the last resort.
Question from me. Someone has gifted me a Haze 4pc grinder. How might it differ from my Medium SCS? I am already can get 3 grind profiles with what I am using. with my method.
Never owned a nice grinder with the diamond teeth.
