When will there be an in-use video of this model? Also, how come the other two Zion models have in-use videos and reviews but not this one?

Yeah this model is not as developed as Zion, though it has gone through quite a bit of dev itself. Once the beta team starts receiving these, trust me you will know it. Thread will blow up with review posts just like Zion did

@IAmKrazy2 has the only TOD, same one HD Springer had, so we're just lucky he can do nice vids. Trust me this one will work very similar in the end, but its one prototype is still being fine tuned (Pak has an earlier 14mm, more rough with no button like the TOD, version).

I'd expect more later in September, potentially October, depending where we're at with Zion production. Then these will be beta tested by us, then churned out for the rest of the orders fairly quick since its simpler than Zion.

Ok, all caught up on the Zion thread, confirmed that transparency and innovation can come together and it's beautiful (C'mon GHL, you can walk this path!), and I know RBT won't be available for a couple more weeks at least, but here're my thoughts on the Single (Cub? Zi-goat? Um... Trek, Trip, Walkabout, Concert, Puma, Elysium, Bliss, Rocket, Voyager, Explorer, Hero?):

- seems like a better/lighter/more economical Firefly, can't wait to hear more from the testers
- an LED tapped-battery indicator, like a simple red light that comes on when the battery hits the cuttoff voltage, would be nice
- basic design as-is would really be fine, please no finger-by-finger grip, IMO that's cheesy. But a small taper could be really nice - since the battery and glass/heater are almost the same dia and the glass/heater needs a little more wood insulation, you could make the glass/heater/fire button side a little fatter than the battery side so when palmed it rests comfortably between thumb and pointer. That'd be nice ergonomics for the fire button and make the unit appear as small as possible w/ minimum detail.
- please oh please can we have the green glass option for early adopters!?

As this version is unregulated I would rather clear glass, as, for some at least, visible vapor is an indicator that will signal getting off the button. After a while taste and warmth may make the visual cues unnecessary but we'll have to see (heh) and that may not work for all.

I hear you, for me I'm used to the taste/temp method from a MFLB. The only time I'll really look at the stem is when I'm packing or picking up, and right then I want to see the wood contrasted w/ green glass, pretty.

@hippogriff I'm with you on the pistol grip thing not my cup of t.
Some subtle scalloping, like this, would make it more ergonomic.

Also really like the button placement on this one.
I am sure you will be able to choose the color glass you would like either direct from RBT or a glass supplier. The wall around the battery could be thinned right down or even partially removed. I will post more when I find a foto.

The wood?
I don't know which Crete your from but how about some nice Olive wood the grain patterns can be stunning.

Yeah, though with the shorty stem on here you won't be relying on visuals here I would think.

Also I only have two green stems from RBT to go with Ziggy's green bowl, and its still visible if your on a high temp can see cloud movement, but the angle is what makes it hard imo, not the color. I've always only really relied on throat etc, not that I even need to much with Zion. Of course here is more manual

@hippogriff I can confirm green and maple is a lovely combo, and the bowl being green doesn't necessarily affect the stem color at all... Personally I'm digging blue, but also saw mention of Orange even for @HD Springer too. Would be really cool with some exotics, which should be easier (and cheaper) here with the smaller piece of wood than in Zion. We don't yet know if this first batch will have those kind of options yet though, as testing the function must be given priority over appearance

I couldn't agree more. Function before form. A lesson many manufacturers should learn. Prove without a shadow of a doubt the thing works first then follow up with the outer appearance. Saves a lot of back peddling if an issue does crop up.
Even tho it's a fair bit of extra work having four different variations of the one technology will have helped the process along very swiftly.
As we have all seen.

Just some thoughts on this model. I was looking at some pictures and noticed that this model (the main body) is just a bit smaller than the size of Flowermate Mini. Can this be used through water as is? Will there be a waterpipe attachment? Also, I look forward to more colored glass....would love this model made of walnut wood with a black stem and a rainbow glass stem. Also, I hope that button placement is comfortable.

Yeah 18mm glass just like Zion now, you'd just have to get a male to male adapter to use as a stem instead. Links have been shared on the Zion thread and many come with dhgate glass

Button placement should work bc it is so small overall, easy to squeeze with palm or finger depending how you hold it. Something we will quickly learn from early beta testing, though RBT seems to be having no trouble so far

Also, I like the size and thinness of the body but I would be okay with them making the unit a little wider to better accomodate the 18mm glass bowl (so it would sit entirely inside the body). That way it would look neater and potentially stealthier, especially with colored glass stems. Is the plan to keep it the same size or change it to accomodate the 18mm bowl?

Another preference would be to have the button placement on the top side (like the Flowermate mini) vs the bottom side. Seems more ergonomic, especially since it seems it may have to be held down for several seconds. I'm sure there is a reason they chose the bottom side, however. Anyway, just my :2c:.

Yeah that was my suggestion too, itd be nice but unfortunately there just isn't any room over there. Future versions maybe, but bottom was really the only option, and you know the team had to go through them all one by one! ;)

@Shit Snacks I can't see there being a problem with putting the switch on top as this picture shows
QQy1tiz.jpg

It is basically like the old 14mm unreg but the extension has been added to the top, instead of the bottom as RBT did. I am sure RBT and TKW will have an ergonomic work round for the placement of the button. Having the switch at the bottom of the unit may be off putting to some. Pinkies and ring fingers aren't as dexterous as the other digits and pressing it with the palm doesn't seem a good idea. It also becomes less discreet when you can't palm it in use. Early days in the development of this unit as you say.

Yeah, but its in the way of heater etc, its been discussed ad nauseum, it just isn't doable on this model at this size, more real estate would have to be added for button to be next too heater or battery, asofnow its in the only spot where it can be alone, and have enough room.

I can't speak for its current ergonomics, but we've been assured its doable bc the device is so small overall, and the button is left bulbous. I think it will be fine, but that is what initial beta testing will reveal when we get there

@Shit Snacks I know some of the switches are around an inch long which does add a bit to the overall length.
I don't know if it could be mounted at an angle similar to thi
MO1JlhG.jpg

Thankfully RBT isn't shy on the beta testing side of these things and I am sure a happy medium will be found.
Which is what makes the development of this technology a real pleasure to follow.

Or if it could be done the old fashioned, vaporpunk way

A nice turned wooden button. Brass contacts and spring steel.

Like @Shit Snacks said, it's the size of the current device, along with the parts, that is prohibitive. Perhaps a streamlined, but slightly larger "mod" would be possible, only time will tell.

Hey Zion10, with all this talk about button placement, can you talk a bit about the button feel? Do you have any doubts you could feather the heat as you like w/ your pinky?

killick

But I like it!
You don't have to use your pinky! Button placement can be flexible... In a future version there will be an optional kit allowing use of other appendages, as well as feathers, for feathering...

Is it October yet?

Soon @killick, we're nearly there.:) It's been a long month.
It won't be long until we can all see which direction this bit of Zion technology and the DPH are going.
You can guarantee RBT hasn't just had his mind on the Zion production.
