Advice on entry level vaporizer needed

Hey guys,

After reading a lot of stuff on this website and some others I've finally been convinced to buy a vaporizer. I have already looked around on the internet and I found an Arizer V-Tower for €75,- (2nd hand) and a FlowerMate 5.0S for the same price. I would like some recommendations on what other options there might be.

  • Price: €75/$85. Can stretch a bit if it's worth it.
  • Delivery system: Don't really care, will mostly be smoking with a couple friends at most.
  • Efficiency: More concerned about making my herbs last to be honest but taking phat hits is always nice!
  • Stealth: Don't really care to be honest as I'll mostly be smoking at home. A stealthy vaporizer would always be nice though.
  • Portability: As I said I'll mostly be smoking at home, but I would like to be able to take my vaporizer with me to a friend's house for instance. If it's not possible then that's alright too, I mainly want the best quality vaporizer for the money I can spend so portability hasn't got the highest priority.
  • Learning curve: Comfortable with a steeper learning curve.
  • Temperature control: Doesn't need any fancy digital controls but some temperature control (like 3 presets) would be awesome.

I'm looking forward to your responses!

I toyed with cheaper vapes but if I can make any recommendation to you, look to spend a touch more money right off the bat and go with an Arizer Solo. It was a godsend and really for a first vaporizer, it's kind of all you'll ever need. I had crappy devices that I hated and almost quite vaping because of it.

Out of the box you'll have two glass stems and one of the best units on the market IMO. It's about the size of a can of Red bull. So while I wouldn't call it the stealthiest device out there, it is certainly portable. It's got a stainless steal heating chamber and glass stems, so the vapor taste is very pure. Easy to clean. I really can't stress this enough. Spend the extra dough and get the Solo!

I agree, the Solo is a very good option if you're willing to spend just a little bit more. (Or find a used one, I picked mine up used for $60. Be sure to check the classifieds here for good deals.) It has great flavor, good battery life, and is very easy to use. Put simply, it's a good, reliable vaporizer. I love my Solo, and wouldn't part with it unless it broke (which I don't forsee happening any time soon).

I'd also look into butane torch powered vaporizers. There's a few of them to consider at your price range. The VaporGenie can be had in several different models ranging from around $35 to upwards of $100. I have a VG Classic ($55) and I love it. I reach for it at least as much as I reach for my Solo. Also, the Vapman and the Lily vaporizer are two other butane options in your price range. The Vapman and the Lily can both be had for around $89. These butane powered vapes are more "hands on" than something like the Solo, and have a bit of a learning curve to them, but once you get the technique down they perform beautifully.

If you're willing to use butane I think the lily or peace are good and easy to use vaporizers. No learning curve and I seem to have problems using vaporizers that others don't. Otherwise, for the price, I agree with the Solo recommendation. That and my log vape are my regular vaporizers.

Thanks for all the replies! Right now I'm waiting for a reply from an old friend who had an Arizer Solo (older model) which he didn't use anymore.

If he doesn't want to sell it my only possibility would be to save some more money, I couldn't find any 2nd hand Solo's where I live (Netherlands) and I don't think ebay ships to NL.

@CarolKing , I mentioned the Flowermate in the OP, how does it compare to the Arizer Solo? What do you all think about the Arizer V-Tower that I can get for $85?

The lily is by far the most finicky vaporizer I have ever used. Almost impossible to get good repeatable hits from it, I wouldnt even recommend it to most seasoned vaporizer users so definitely couldnt recommend it as entry level.

I guess we all have different experiences. I never got the hang of the vaporgenie or the vapman but find the lily easy to use.

As for the Arizer V. Tower it seems to get good reviews online. I recommend going to the Arizer V thread here and ask owners the pros and cons.

Arizer VTower and EQ are very similar (save for VTower missing an internal fan and remote control). There's much good info in the EQ thread as well and it's a bit more actively updated.

Alright guys I got a Solo! My friend sold it to me for €85. Just tried it out and I have to say I'm impressed by the flavour, ease of use and nice, clear high. Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Anyone know if there are ways to make 'the pull' (breathing in through the vaporizer) easier? Right now I have to such pretty hard to get a decent hit.

You'll get used to the pull. Try using lower heat with a slower draw, then work with speed and temp until your comfy. It takes a little getting used to but you'll get it.

Planet Vape sells stems that improve airflow. The degree of which is debated but I feel it really helps a lot. They also have "gongs" to use with water pipes. You now own one of the most versatile adapters int he world my friend. Enjoy it. Check out the Solo thread in the portable vapes section (also use google lots of helpful solo tips elsehwere as well) and have fun experimenting with it. I sure did.

I've never used a solo but from all I've read you have picked out a winner.

I am however very familiar with the Flowermate series and highly recommend the 5.0, 5.0s, and the 5.0 pro. The plain old 5.0 was my original backup vape and still works like a champ, produces clouds forever, and has a nice long battery life. The 5.0s and pro don't cost much more and are solid performers.

Once you can, get a backup. It sucks to be without!

Congratulations and welcome to FC!

The Solo is a great buy, you can never go wrong with one. I have had mine for nearly two years and love grows stronger by the day!
In fact, I just bought some of Ed's stems  for our anniversary! Bog Oak and Cocobolo...Haha! Just like Saul Goodman: 'repeat after me: coco-bolo, co-co-bo-lo'...:haw:

That's YET another great thing about the Solo: it has very few but very useful accessories that really change the way it performs, especially through water! Not that the stock accesories are bad in any way. It all just adds up...

It is a bit late already, but FYC there is also a very nice vape lineup in the works by @RastaBuddhaTao, the Zion family... The famous '18mm Unregulated Single, Was 14mm 18650' to be exact, still under development, but you can get hold of one for $89 at present time.

Pull the stem upwards a couple mm while you draw helps with draw restriction.

You could just lift the stem a mm out of the bowl.
Or put a 5/8 inch screen in bowl to achieve the same thing.
Or they have stems with grooves cut in them also

Okay, looks like I'll just have to get used to it then. I don't have any money to buy any aftermarket stems unfortunately... I'll try pulling the stem out a bit. One last question: is it possible to get any thick clouds? I have tried vaping a new bowl on a well warmed up 6 but it still didn't amount to much.

Make sure your herb is nice and dry. Grind some then pour it out on a piece of notebook paper and let it sit for an hour or so, to remove some moistur that may be in it.
