Crafty/Crafty+ by Storz & Bickel

Alright so I made the PonG adapter aka "muzzmod" for my mighty and crafty. I took a few pics to try and simplify things since some see a torch in the original tutorial by @elmomuzz and get scared away without getting the chance to experience another level to an already amazing device. I will try to explain things as best as I can.

I first want to note that a torch or any fire is NOT required. In fact, no modification to your glass adapter is needed unless you get some crappy glass (no offense) and it needs to be smoothed out to your liking. Chances are however, you won't need to touch your glass at all as it will already be smoothed out so don't worry until you actually get the adapter and see that it has rough edges. I got my adapters for $5 each on eBay and they came in excellent and very smooth condition. They could have been sold at $10 each easily. I guess it depends on which seller you get it from, so do your research.

The first thing you will need to do is cut down your donor cooling unit which you will be using for this mod. I already posted this a couple pages back but I will add the pics here as well. I decided to use a dremel instead of a hacksaw to make things a lot easier and faster for myself. All it took was a steady hand and then slowly cutting down into the "tabs" as much as I could (referenced in one of the pics below how to make the slice on its side) and then I slid it from left to right to make a even slice all across. I then flipped the cooling unit over and repeated the same on the other side and the piece you will use for the mod will fall off. The cutting process takes 30 seconds, if that. What is needed after the cut is to sand down the surface that has the "tabs" sticking up to give it a flat smooth surface so the glass adapter can sit flush. For this, I just swapped out the cutting wheel for a sanding wheel and used my dremel again. You can use a coarse grit sand paper instead and get the same results but with more time and effort. The final result should be a flat smooth surface where the adapter will sit.

I took an extra step and decided to widen the hole on the plastic piece to let more air/vapor through. I used a fine diamond bur bit to smoothly widen the hole with the dremel. After I felt satisfied, I stopped and threw the plastic piece in iso for 6 min and then rinsed it under hot water to clean it off.

Now that the plastic part is ready for the adapter, you can focus on the glass. Fortunately for me, the adapters I purchased were already very smooth and needed no filing whatsoever, so I skipped this step altogether. However, for some of you unfortunate ones with rough glass, I included a pic of how you can file the edges to make it smooth with diamond filers instead of needing to use a torch. The torch gives you the smoothest finish and is quite simple itself in the right conditions, but this is another good alternative which will give you a smooth finish as well and it's very simple and easy to do. You also don't need any fancy diamond filers. I got some cheap chinese filers from amazon. I have used them on my solo and air stems and they do the job well. You can even use diamond bits in your dremel if you want instead. It's up to you. After your done, throw the adapter in iso for a few minutes and then rinse it in hot water to clean it off.

Once the glass and plastic is ready, you will need to mount them together and apply the jb weld. The easiest way to do this is with a trigger clamp. I ended up using a 42" heavy duty clamp which I already had out for a wooden dresser I recently built. You want to place the glass ontop of the plastic piece and clamp them down together. Don't tighten it too much so you can shift them around a bit to line it up the way you want it to look once the epoxy is dried and cured. Once you have everything lined up, tighten the clamp until tight enough not to move. Now for the jb weld, I used a small ceramic bowl with aluminium foil covering it. Squeeze your jb weld with an even amount from each tube and mix it together. It will become an all black paste. I used 2 toothpicks together to carefully apply the epoxy but this is up to you what you want to use as an applicator. Just note that the epoxy is messy but the good thing is, it wipes clean off the glass if still fresh so you can clean up if you spill a bit or put too much around the adapter. One trick you can do which I didnt take the time to do so myself is to use masking tape to put around the base of the adapter so you have a clean line after applying the epoxy. Just make sure to remove the tape a couple minutes after you apply the weld while its still fresh. You want to make a full solid seal around the seam between the glass and plastic. Make sure you DO NOT get any jb weld inside of the airpath where the vapor will travel as you can inhale harmful fumes. Apply only on the outside. After your done applying the epoxy, let it sit clamped until it's dried. I personally left it clamped overnight.

Once the epoxy has dried and cured, unclamp the adapter and you have yourself a PonG or "muzzmod" as many call it. Enjoy!

I hope this post helps some of you intimidated to attempt this mod. It's actually really easy if you think about. Cut your cooling unit, sand it down, clamp the glass adapter to the plastic piece and apply the epoxy to it. If you by chance received rough glass, file it down a bit to smooth it up and that's it. Let the epoxy dry and your done!

For vineetvel: i tried the crafty only with premium herb because i was in amsterdam, 10 or most type of weed from the best place in town (and dried properly) so the quality of the herb is not the problem with my experience.
I tried many times to start with low temp, 165-170 C and raise the temp like 180-185 but the number of draws are stll 10-12 even with the max temp for the last draw...
In this topic i never heard about 20-30 minute or 40-50 draw session...the people with a crafty usually kill a full load in less then 10 minutes with 10-12 long draw...
You're the first that i read with so long session (good for you buddy ;) )

The most similar experience that i have with monstruos solo session are with my dead inhalater xp and the incredible 30-40 min session with 50++ draw...i put 20 year heavily smokers in their knese with that beast...

Oh and in the solo i remove the steam after the draw so its almost pure convenction.

Agreed @Marky
The solo used to be my favourite portable.
But the crafty kicks it's ass in many respects. Especially for vapor quality (other than the solo's first puff, the crafty wins every other puff thereafter). And also for effect, the crafty is noticeably better.

I still love the solo but it's a distant second for the reasons listed above.

Have any of you tried the lily? I mailed my crafty to a friend as a loan because I've been enjoying it so much...haven't even touched the mighty in WEEKS. The point is we all like different things for different reasons. That's what makes life cool.. the variety.

My crafty just bit the dust! 14 hours in and not even 1 month later and my button failed! I was in the middle of a session and noticed the button not responding to any inputs. I emailed SB, they should be a help now. Thank god I got a mighty to back me up....

I wouldn't bother with the no goo accessories you mentioned.
If you have access to isopropyl alcohol get the no goo dish where you will put your reclaim to dry.
You will clean the CU soaking it in ISO, not scraping at all,then after some washes your ISO will become black with reclaim. I still have to read a guide for it, but I think that filtering the black ISO with a cheesecloth to remove abv particles and then putting it on a no goo dish could be more effective.

I'm not sure, but it's hard to see the edge on the tool you linked.

I made a post in the mighty thread with suggestions for goo scooping, including the tool I use:


I am somewhat careful (I never apply excessive force), however I don’t baby it either and I am yet to scrape off any Cooling-Unit plastic (no visible scratch marks either).

I use a “Happy Daddy Grindson” tool to scrape up my reclaim from the cooling unit (See photos below) it’s not sharp but it’s still got an edge.

I just heat up my CU with a hair dryer, to make it easy to open and it also makes the reclaim VERY easy to scoop up when it’s warm.
If you don’t have a hair dryer, I have also set my crafty to max temp and sucked with nothing in the bowl, so the hot air convection does the same thing, but I’ve gotten slightly intoxicated by doing that in the past lol.

Then I scrape out the reclaim and apply it to a liquid pad (that came with the crafty) and use it in the bowl again.


Although I have heard of people using anything, toothpicks, dab tools, my friend uses a bent piece of wire. But I’m glad I got my tool.. makes it pretty easy (in conjuction with hair dryer to soften it).
After I have done this I ISO bath the CU and get a second ISO reclaim after ~5 or so washes.


NOTE: I suggest using the fine screen in your cooling unit if you intend to do this scoop method. I tried with the coarse screen and I had chunks in my reclaim! Sorta gross and I think it affected the flavor, a fine screen minimizes this.

Where did you read that the warranty is 3 years if bought from S&B? I have never heard that before.

SB just sent me a tracking # of my brand new replacement crafty :)

They told me to put just the heating unit in the box and send it back with the label that will come with the new unit. They were quick to respond, but when I have questions they don't care. Still not thrilled with their CS. Any company would replace a unit under warranty that fails under normal use. Just got my solo replaced with a brand new unit from arizer 2 weeks ago. But I guess SB did me a favor by sending me the replacement first so I'm thankful for that :)

They refused to do that for me. I had to purchase a second unit and send my defective one back for a refund. I really wish they would treat each customer the same. They used to be great back in the Volcano days.

Not sure why they chose to treat me differently but I did let them know the inconvenience this has caused me and I asked the person to put themselves in my shoes. I also let them know it's embarrassing that this button defect has been occurring since day 1 on their units and it hasn't been addressed to this day even on revised units. I'm sure they know very well why this defect keeps occurring and I read many other cases of broken buttons and they all received new units in return. I read its something to do with the wiring or soldering job to the circuit board. I can most def open it up and fix the button myself if that is the case but why when I have warranty and can get a brand new unit? Maybe SB didn't bother waiting to look at my device because they already know what to expect?

I also want to give my opinion on the price tag for these units. I feel it is so high because SB expects to give us new units during warranty. I keep asking myself why would they lose all this money with all the new units they give out like hand outs when you send yours in for repair? I read members with 4 or 5 different brand new replacements and its amazing. To further back my theory, I also found pics on this thread (lots of pages back) of the crafty opened up and there is not $400 worth (original price) of engineering and materials into this unit. I know every company inflates prices because that's how you make money (nobody sells something for the price it took to make it) but SB inflates them beyond the point where they are making a good profit. I feel they can sell the crafty at $280 and still make good profit gains if their units are reliable and don't need replacing so frequently.

Im not complaining though because the units do perform so good that we users don't care about the price tag and would buy it again if we could do it over lol. I just think sometimes, is it truly worth it's price tag?...

Only the warranty for desktops is 3 years, the s&b portables are covered 2 years only. I guess they know why...

What the actual fuck - I can't believe S&B is cross-shipping now for some customers after telling me (two days ago!) that their policy was not to do cross-shipping. They couldn't even process my payment information for my Mighty upgrade until "after they had looked at it," I guess to confirm that I wasn't lying about my third defective unit.

I also called them 4 times to discuss the issue over the phone, but they never picked up. I left messages, but they would only respond via email (and very sluggishly too).

I also requested that they not ship via FedEx Ground (took 8 days to arrive last time; prior replacements were through USPS), and they charged me 30 dollars for shipping. I'm certainly getting fleeced, but I ended up paying just so they'd ship the damn thing out. I'm just sick of this company and want my Mighty. Hopefully I never have to contact them again (unlikely but I gotta have hope), because their customer service has totally fallen off the map. I can't believe I used to defend this company.

Will keep my eye out for tools like that. Have one very similar, that I use to spread wax on my surf board, will just chop it to size :)

From what iv read , they give you a 3year if u deal through them and 24month through retailers but honestly I don't have much experience. It's just strange because I brought the issue up with the S&B cs and they seemed to acknowledge this difference and explain it like so...

"Their 12 month warranty may refer to them dealing with the shipment and the handling. The two year warranty will still be valid if you send the device to us"

They were really helpfull yesterday and had such quick responses to my emails.

Thx for sharing your experience, even though it was miserable. Inconsistent customer service makes no sense, and it sounds like they really took advantage of you. And I second your frustration with FedEx.

Yesterday I got my 3rd Crafty since December 14. It has firmware 2.08 and the housing modifications.

I am very happy with the customer service from S&B. I have never sent an email with questions about replacing or repairing my unit. I only wrote my probs on a paper and sent it with the unit to s&B. After a week I asked how long it will take to get my Crafty back. Both times I received the same day a nice answer.
I own the Volcano for 3 years now and never had a problem! That and the perfect Customer service makes S&B the No.1 in my opinion!

I have no experience with the sticky ball for wax/reclaim storage. But heard it's good.
I personally goo scoop straight onto a liquid pad and use it right away.
I suppose if you intend to store and build up a large quantity it would be useful (depends on your planed usage, but I don't ever need it).

Not sure what you are referring to, is it for storage purposes?
Maybe someone else can comment if they know what it is.
I don't think you need it.
Reclaim directly from the cooling unit (via goo scooping) has no water to remove, it's an oil.
If you iso wash your cooling unit and then let the iso evaporate, any water will evaporate too (just slower).
