That's awesome! I forgot about hops! I'm actually drinking a hoppy beer right now lol. I'm going to hit up the hop farm tommarow and see what they got.

did you press the hops fresh or dry?

This looks like a fun press. Puts my arbor press to shame.

https://instagram.com/p/6jjiGgwkCw/?tagged=rosinpress

I pressed freshly picked hops- they were too moist and the parchment had to sit out overnight before collection was possible. The result was still very pleasing. I have a bowl full drying now, and I think that will press better.

The press you link does have some very nice heat plates, but that arbor press is a sub hundred-buck 1 ton model, the same kind I just broke. I've been trying to figure out how to make a set of heated plates myself- but I haven't come up with a good, affordable solution yet.

I have been looking at different ways to heat metal plate. Now I found some things like this that I would imagine you could connect to a digital pid controller and mount two of these on either side of a vise/press...dunno...I even thought of maybe getting silicone heating mats to put on one side of a metal plate of some sort...just brainstorming.

Edit: If using the plate below, I would mount that to the back of a thicker, stronger plate...using just what's shown below would bend in a second under any kind of pressure I'm sure.

I purchased a 50 watt, 2x5 inch silicone heat mat to place between the plates in the press and keep them hot. I found it didn't produce enough heat for my needs, so it doesn't get used.

The heat element you show is more what I've been looking for. The trick would be to make a block out of three plates, with the middle plate having a cut out middle section so it's shaped like a rectangular "u". Then a heater could be potted in with heat conductive epoxy. That would keep all the pressure off the heater core.

I am not sure of pressure or PSI, but it's gotta be high with the small plates . This new c clamp is supposed to be the shit. Gonna pick one up tommarow. It's advertised 2500lbs clamping force. Throw that in a 10 or 12 in wooden hand screw clamp.

I bought one of these last week, but have been waiting on flowers to test it out. Well, initial results look impressive. Plan to do a measured test this afternoon.

I tried to cancel my dnail press order but dnail is refusing to refund my money while referencing the shipping agreement I signed. I can not really blame them but considering nothing has shipped yet and it seems they are not out anything yet, I was hopeful. . Hopefully they fix the weak bits so I don't have to.

Has anyone used this model? I hear good things about it.

or how about this one ?
It says , it has ' floating plates ' on the 2nd line of description .
For a flatter compress ???

How are you DIY mods , preventing the iron's plastic casing from breaking ?
I was thinking of wrapping a hand towel around it before applying
the vise-grip .

I'm so glad I found this thread .
It looks like a much faster process than my qwiso .

Cheers for that heads up on the UV light bro! I have had a lot of trouble collecting this super clear cluster bomb rosin from my first bubble wash - this is gonna make that super easy.

Now man I know that 13g out of 40g of bubble doesn't sound great, but remember, this was 3 star bubble (according to bubbleman). 3 star is not liable to be anymore than half melt, meaning we shouldn't expect any more than 50% returns in the first place.

Now Bubbleman got 13.9g I believe after his few squishes, which is a 34.75% return. For 3 squishes, that is so much better of a return than I've gotten with lower end 4 star material (maybe 60-70% melt) even! I often have to do 10-20 squishes to get that out of 4 star material with my flat iron. After reviewing the video, there was 100% more material to be squished by the end of the video!

Of course, if that was bubble-man's usual 5 or 6 star full melt we'd be expecting much closer to 100% return. I must say, if you are pressing stuff that is nearly full melt already, I have learned that you do not need more than a hair straightener unless you wanna be some big player in the commercial game.

I'm super interested to see soilgrowns experiences with the beta press though and his mod especially, but I don't do social networks as they are prison-bait for this stuff in my locality.

Get a UV headlamp or wall mounted light. Holding the flashlight sucks. With my v1.0 c clamp hair iron press, I pressed 4 star bubble, 2g in 1.7 g out While pressing twice. The first press getting 95% percent of the yield. You can sign up for Instagram using an email that does not exist and observe a lot.

Soilgrowns dnail press has bent at the very top plate by the springs from high pressure to reach normal yields. He replaced the bolts with shorter bolts and mounted directLy to top plate. I can't post pics because it's private account. Bubble-man first big press yield was straight shameful. 40 g in 13g out lol give me a break. i am not impressed with the dnail press so far.

Has anyone experienced fish like flavor from dabbing flower rosin?

Has anyone pressed lavender, basil, thyme, mint, etc. yet?

Does anyone have a UV light to shine onto a parchment paper?

Edit

I went and purchased a uv light from China-Mart $10. It works for collecting rosin in less than ideal light easily. Also rosin looks crazy under uv light. You can see ever little drop of rosin.

I bought that conair last night. What a fucking piece of shit. Literally the worst build quality around internally. Shocked myself then it wouldn't turn on.

I have the same arbor press purchased for $40.00 new. There are crazy deals on used pneumatic presses online.

I'm not impressed with the conairs so far. Chop up the hair iron and attach. I do like the revlon and Remington straighteners.

I ripped the plates out of mine similar to @Been Vapin but my clamp is different, it's like this one:
31KhUO3dJfL._SX425_.jpg

I found the plates get too hot and melt the clamp feet mounted bare, but I used some cheap-ass dollar store super glue to stick some old plates to the backs of the active ones, creating a nice heat sink buffer.

I have the pictured clamp stood up on end (with the holes in the flatbar used to secure it in a similar wooden clamp to @Been Vapin's), and a piece of pipe jammed on the pistol grip to use as a pump handle. It does actually produce better than anything else I've built to date, but every time I use it I get new idea for improvement lol.

My current iron is a BaByliss (wtf?) Pro I got at the thrift store for $4. Pretty nice 2" plates, temp dial goes down to 239f, but after taking the body of the iron apart the dial stops at 254f now? Not sure what temp I'm really working at atm, but I use 2 layers of parchment and have taken to using @shark sandwich's tip (thx btw!) about turning the unit off to drop temp a bit. Until I pick up a heat gun I'm just learning by feel atm but even at the 254f it's not roasting the oil too much

material list

10 in wooden hand screw clamp
Super glue
$3.99 thrift store hair iron.
Milwaukee swivel C clamp
Electrical tape
Screwdriver was used to break hair iron apart
Jb weld original

Hair iron and c clamp become one unit

Take apart hair iron. Tape up exposed areas. Super glue hair iron to side of Milwaukee swivel c clamp. Jb weld original plates to c clamp. Let cure 24 hours. I actually sold this one for a decent amount.

I went from using a hair straightener alone, to a clamp and straightener, to the arbor press and plates. I never did tear apart the straightener to directly mount the plates, but it seems like the most elegant solution for doing some serious pressing with a setup that's very mobile and attainable.

I was really impressed by the device @Been Vapin posted a few pages back, and I wanted to throw a suggestion your way @GuyLeDuche :

Wood spacers placed between the rubber pads and the heat plates would be the most effective and durable insulation you can easily get. You can secure everything with JB weld, which is pretty strong, and safe to use up to about 450F. I use a special-made wood spacer with a 3 ton press, and it works great.

Saw this on another forum.

I use one of these, only it's re-branded as Vidal Sassoon.. (no wonder I couldn't find it online for so long)
I can't pretend to have tons of experience with rosin so far; but this one seems pretty damn durable in my hobby vise at pressure, even in the plastic casing
Also it has a temp control knob you can fine tune temps with- I use this crappy non-contact IR thermometer http://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-pocket-thermometer-93983.html

Man some of you guys have gone off the wall building presses- kudos to all the DIY platforms, looks fun!

@Been Vapin ,
Thank you for the list , I guessed on a couple of them already .
And have a c-clamp in mind from Rona .

The other thing was wax/parchment paper that I can
get anywhere . But what are the microns material you're using .
I've heard of cheese cloths and all , but are they necessary ???
For me , I'll be using strictly Buds .

Thanx everyone for your help .

Haha, funny you should mention that, my first build had wood spacers but all I had was super glue and it does not play nicely with wood lol. Too fibrous. I could get about 3 presses before the wood just peeled off and dropped the top plate. Though to be fair I did take off the rubber feet (they were just acting as shock absorbers) and mounted directly to the hard plastic foot under the rubber, which may have put more stress on the glue joint, IDK.

Curious if the plates will be removable like the others Im seeing in this thread

All plates are removable if you want it bad enough! :)

I use Reynolds parchment paper and For filtration, a 25u pressing screen. DO NOT USE WAX PAPER.

A filtration screen is only necessary To clean up contamination. I would advise to use some foRm of filter to clean it up.

I just took some old shake/trim, made trim into pucks, pressed, collected everything from parchments. Then took the rosin, wrapped it in 25u screen and repressed again at 150F. All the nasty shit was caught in the 25u.

The trim yields were low, but the quality of the rosin was about the same as flower rosin.

Shake/leaf rosin

Shit that was in the above dab. Mostly bits of leaf, hair, dust, etc. when viewed under 40x magnification.

This is an excellent post man! You are contributing so much great information to this thread :D

I have been recently squishing my shake (I don't have access to trim) with similarly good results :)

I wonder if we can press AVB? Has anyone tried this? :D

I find that oil slick sheets are the best for pressing, since these are made of one material (PTFE) which has excellent chemical resistance and so long as you do not pinch the slick sheet and deform it with too much pressure, is the clear winner over parchment etc IMO for collection material! Two separate pieces used to sandwich the material helps avoid deformation/pinching.

If any deformation or marks appear on your teflon, throw it away immediately. Do not press this again!

idk if this has been asked , but
can you use emptied-out tea bags for screens ?
are they fine enuf , or just stick with cheese cloths .

tia

also the d-nail press is down to $ 335 for pre-order now .
http://www.d-nail.com/frontpage/d-nail-heat-press
I've used them with great success man, but I reported early in this thread not to. Most teabags use additives to strengthen the bag which are absolutely not safe to squish with heat. Use calico/musclin cloth :)

I like this, after you're done pressing you can shove the cloth in your favorite vaporizer and really enjoy getting it clean ;)
You could indeed do this (convection only at lower temps, I would not use conduction vapes on this, you'll get black marks if you're not especially careful!), or you can reclaim in ISO/ethanol for a clean as new look (rinse thoroughly with water and dry it quickly using your flat iron ;) )

You can also clean it by just squishing until it is clean and the starting material is crumbly and hard and just falls away :D
