Herb Grinders

In the end and at the last second.. I decided to get the 4 piece instead. The way I see it.. I have to see what all the hub bub is about.. and unless this kief catcher is really messy or it's taking too long to get anything substantial out of it I probably wont get a 3 piece. I'm worried about this because my eventual goal is to try to limit my MMJ usage to just the weekends. If I ever (in a million years) get to that point.. How long would it take me to collect a decent amount of kief then? I'm guessing at best maybe an 1/8 a week..? I read up about our grinds having less potency due to the kief collection and most of what I found favored the idea that the end user couldn't possibly notice any difference so I'm rolling with that for now!

I got the small 2.1 inch Green Matte 4 piece. I was thinking a darker color might make the flower more visible and was really eye balling that Gun Metal too. Next time for sure.

New to the forum, first post. I've been using my 2 piece SCS for about 2 years and it's been mostly fine. It's the medium size and being so shallow depth wise I find it annoying to grind as my fingers are always bumping together. I thought I'd try a 4 piece and based on reputation bought the small space case scout because of it's supposed ability for finer grind.

Well it arrived this morning and I'm sad to report I see debris and what could be metal filings on the bottom thread section by the kief catcher. Note, there is no debris on the section that screws together where the herb collects. Here are some pics for those that may find it useful:

How do you like the 2 piece SCS? How does it compare to other 2 piece grinders?

Can't wait to see it! Better share some pictures.
Just a quick crappy one! I'm sorry but I was way too anxious to grind some of this Godzilla Indica! Can you blame me? lol Seems my Galaxy S5 is having problems focusing up close. Sorry to have only one and it coming it out the way it did.

It ended up being a 0.7 I put in my Plenty! Maybe it was just me but the vapor was really different. Tasted slightly different too after using the SCS. I do like how it gives it a kind of "fluffed up" appearance but I was wondering is this going to grind any finer than this?

If you turn it upside down.. doesn't that affect the Kief from collecting right? It's totally ok to shake it from Side to side.. Upside down and all that? Really? Thats what I read here.

Oh and I absolutely love how easy this thing turns. OMG

^^^I really don't think turning it upside down affects the kief at all, unless maybe you have a whole bunch of kief collected, which probably ought to be removed or transferred to another container anyway.

I thought you said you ordered green matte. I was really looking forward to seeing green matte, which I haven't seen anywhere else yet. That looks shiny to me. What am I missing?

I think I have found that if you want to do the upside down thing, it might be best to load the lid and keep it upside down, not sideways, then flip it from upside down to right side up and turn the lid a little more to push everything through the holes. When I use SCSs sideways, herbs make their way between the male and female edges, which causes gunk. (I'm not 100% sure about that last sentence yet, but I feel like it's probably true.)

Santa Cruz shredder FOR THE WIN. I see my 4piece easily lasting years for me. 3-5 quick turns and my product comes out grinder just the way I need it. Can't go wrong with it imo

Yes that's Green Matte and it's definitely not shiny. Gotta apologize for the quality of the focus I gotta look at my S5. Anyhow I'll try to post some more tomorrow if I can.

Also I think you're right about loading the top (since there are no holes there) and using that technique. That's actually how I assumed it is supposed to be used? Didn't make sense to me to load the herb on the side with the holes to fall through. It's how I've been doing it so far! :)

I'm just concerned if I really do cut my herb use down to the weekends.. is that kief really going to build up? Of course I'm getting way ahead of myself but I'm just thinking down the line haha!

^^^I guess I can see some parts, like the inside of the lid, that clearly look like matte now that I've looked at it again. The glare on the kief catcher made it look like a glossy finish to me before.

Doesn't it just feel awesome? I don't mean how the operation of the grinder feels; I mean the powdery texture of the exterior. It's so smooth and there is very little friction between the grinder and my skin, yet it provides phenomenal grip at the same time. The knurling provides a much better grip than the exact same knurling in the glossy finish.

I can't figure out why Cosmic Case doesn't seem to be very popular, even though 1) they look nice, 2) it appears that they are somewhat similar (or very similar) to Santa Cruz Shredders, and 3) the price suggests they are high-end (and I think I've read that SCS was started by someone from Cosmic Case). I recently noticed that Cosmic Case also shares one major physical characteristic with SCS, which is that the male part is on the lid. (SCS is the only other brand I can think of with the male part on the lid.)

Anyone have a Cosmic Case? Care to say something about it here? Maybe share some pictures? I've read this whole thread, but I don't remember seeing much of anything about Cosmic Case.

All I can really say is that I think Santa Cruz Shredder's rasta grinders look way better, or truer, than Cosmic's rasta grinders.

EDIT: Is anyone familiar with Grindhouse? Just saw these for the first time:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014...110_SY165_QL70&keywords=Cosmic+case+two+piece

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Y...+two+piece&dpPl=1&dpID=510caGcaJ7L&ref=plSrch

These grinders, as well as many others from this maker, came up when I did a search for Cosmic Case on Amazon. I'm kind of wondering if they may be made by Cosmic.

^^^Yeah, something just made me become obsessed with grinders a couple months ago. I bought my first high-end grinder in June, but now I have:

SCS
  • 1 large gun metal 4-piece (my first).
  • 1 small blue 4-piece.
  • 1 small matte orange 4-piece.
  • 1 mini rasta 4-piece.
  • 1 mini purple 2-piece.
Space Case (all 2-piece)
  • 1 large titanium finish.
  • 1 medium standard finish.
  • 1 small standard finish.
Diamond Grind
  • 1 silver/chrome 56mm 5-piece.
The grinder that came with my Air (from puffitup) seems like a quality grinder, but I've never used it. I have several cheap ones, too, that probably aren't worth mentioning.

I think my grinder binge is over, although I think I do have plans of buying a small 2-piece SCS eventually, and possibly take advantage of a really good grinder deal now and then. It might seem weird that I've bought so many grinders in such a short period of time, but it had been a long time since I'd bought anything nice for myself, and my first high-end grinder (large SCS) just did something to me. I'm glad I became obsessed with grinders, too, because I don't know how much longer my hands are going to be able to use them. I'm just glad to have experienced this passion for grinders while I still could.

Or maybe having all these grinders will actually make my hands somewhat useful for longer than they would have been otherwise. Like I said a few weeks ago, I love playing with them, and it's kind of like physical therapy for me.

Yeah.. again it was a really crappy pic to begin with. The thing feels awesome man! I love opening up the chamber and am always surprised with how much I really put in there! It's probably just an illusion since the grinder kind of "Fluffs" the bud. It's silky smooth and I love it! I mainly got the matte because of scratches.

Now I only have a few questions:

1. How long can I keep my herb in this grinder? In other words, Say I want to grind as much as will fill the chamber and let it sit there for a few days or maybe a week? Although I currently vape and/or smoke every evening (still currently working on converting to vaping for good) and don't think I would ever let herb sit in that chamber longer than that... Is it pretty much airtight with the magnet? I know this may be a basic question but to be honest with you I have yet to learn about proper herb storage and how long it stays good for. All I know is I've been using a small 420 Jar.

2. Same as question 1 except how long can Kief be stored there and how long does it stay good for? Would I just use a tiny glass jar for this as well.

3. Is there any way to get the grind any finer? I'm not sure why but my stock orange plastic S&B one can get near powder fine. I'm not 100% sure of this but it seems as if my sessions aren't lasting quite as long now? I could be wrong about this but the thought has crossed my mind.

4. Does anyone actually just grind up their whole stash at once and either just store it in the grinder or move it to an airtight mason jar? Or does it somehow keep the herb fresher if you grind only every time you have to.. or only once per session if you will?

Received my 2-piece S&B acrylic grinder, mostly for vaping tobacco - I like it a lot! Nice effortless grind!!! Should be getting my Compton 4-piece in a few weeks and expect to love it. I will report back here with impressions when i do.

Alright guys, I need some help. I'm in need of a new grinder, looking into getting a 4 or 5 piece.

I can't afford a space case or SCS tbh. I've seen similar, cheaper alternatives on amazon, mostly Cali Crusher or Chromium Crushers. 4 Piece large for around $15. The only other brand that seems more affordable is Diamond Grind, anyone have any experience with these? Or does anyone have any other recommendations on more affordable grinders? Is it worth it to spend the $60-$80 on an SCS or Space Case? Also does material make a difference - titanium vs aluminum?

Compton's removable screen tool looks pretty awesome.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
I bought the small Space Case (4 piece). I don't know anything about the other brands.

What can I say? The pros: it grinds well, it feels pretty solid, no worries about getting metal shards in my herb like a cheapo grinder.

The cons: Screen not removable and it's getting all kinds of gunked up with pollen, if you pack any herb in the very center, then it blocks a good connection between the magnet in the grinder and the magnetic lid, preventing it from closing completely. A minor annoyance but you have to scrape out the squished herb in the center (over the magnet) in order to get the lid to hold.

I am happy with the purchase. I do a light grind. I only give it 2-3 half turns then dump it out from the top. Not enough turns to send much into the next chamber.

@srama21 Because of the price, and especially because you mentioned this grinder make and style yourself, I think you might like the Diamond Grind 5-piece. I like it a lot, although I haven't used it much for grinding; mostly just sifting. I have used it to grind a little bit, though, and the grind quality seemed fine to me.

This grinder doesn't have the luxurious feel or look of Santa Cruz Shredder or Space Case, but I feel like it's a really nice grinder.

With the summer discount code and free shipping through tomorrow at EZVAPES, the small (50 mm) 5-piece comes out to $33.15. http://ezvaporizers.com/grinders/diamond-grind-5-piece-aluminum-grinder-small/prod_508.html

It looks like there may be an even better price at EZGRINDERS (which is EZVAPES), and I didn't look to see if there is a discount or free shipping through tomorrow. http://ezgrinders.com/brands/diamond-grind.html

Here's the listing for the small on Amazon (through EZVAPES): https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005...five+piece&dpPl=1&dpID=41m2LkDbARL&ref=plSrch.

Thanks man, I appreciate your input. Does the diamond grinder feel heavy or does it feel like the puffitup grinder?

EDIT- i'm reconsidering, and I think it may be worth it to spring for the space case or scs

1. I don't know how airtight the grinder is, but I frequently grind up a few days worth of herb at a time and store it in my grinder. It keeps it just fine, IMO. I've kept herb in there longer than a week, too, with good results. And if it does dry out a tiny bit, that's ok with me, I'll be vaping it either way! ;)

2. Same with kief. Store it in the grinder if you wish, or the jar. I've been accumulating kief slowly in my grinder for months now, and it seems to keep just fine.

3. To get a finer grind, I unscrew the top two pieces off of my grinder and grind with just those two pieces, upside down so the holes are on top. Keep turning until desired consistency. The reason I remove the bottom half is to avoid disturbing the kief collection. Don't know if it matters really, but

4. Lately I've been grinding larger quantities at a time, and storing the ground herb in JyARz. Being light-proof and airtight, they keep it as fresh as the day it was ground up. I definitely recommend them!

EDIT: FWIW, I don't have an SCS. These are just my observations with my 4 piece SharpStone. So YMMV of course...

I don't think it feels heavy. The finish is about the same as the puffitup (smooth and no color), but the puffitup grinder has sharper corners and no noticeable knurling. The Diamond Grind has what I consider very nice knurling on the lid, but it doesn't have knurling on the bottom (nor does it need knurling on the bottom). I'd say the Diamond Grind feels considerably nicer than the puffitup. Probably considerably better quality all around, too.

If you end up choosing to go high-end, I'd recommend putting small Santa Cruz Shredder 4-piece with matte finish on the short list.

I've been looking at that SCS. Its unfortunate that ezvapes only has the medium and mini. With the promotion they're having, if they had the small i would pull the trigger right now.

Now that is the info I was looking for right there! Thanks bro! I highly doubt I'd ever leave anything in my grinder for more than a week besides the kief obviously so I guess I shouldn't worry.

Also that's some damn good advice on getting a finer grind too. I wonder why I didn't think of that!

Anyhow I feel you on wanting to store the ground up herb ahead of time. Even though it only takes less than a minute to grind for me now since I got my SCS, most of the time I just don't want to handle the herb and just want to be able to pour it right in from the grinder.

I still can't believe I went 3 months without a proper grinder man. Sure the stock S&B one that came with my Plenty worked great but it always got clogged up and I had to clean it with a toothbrush and ISO every damn week. I'm so happy with this thing I'm beyond words!

Medium is small. SCS doesn't offer a size called medium, but small is incorrectly labeled medium much more often than not. Here's small: http://ezvaporizers.com/grinders/santa-cruz-4-piece-aluminum-grinder-small/prod_486.html.

According to the email I received, you don't have to do anything to get the free shipping. You just order. The free shipping deal is available through tomorrow (Wednesday).

There's always someone available to chat on the web site in the daytime (EDT).
