Discontinued The Grasshopper

it was mentioned in the old grasshopper thread...

for those looking for an easy way to offgas their new hopper, just make an old school gravity style piece out of a two liter bottle. stab a hole in the bottom, tape it shut, put the grasshopper up top on the mouth piece (with silicon mouthpiece!) and turn it on, uncover the hole on the bottom. repeat as necessary.

its what i plan on doing. seems like the easiest way.

Could you provide details as to how you did the burnoff cycles? Turning it on and letting it heat up wouldn't be enough without drawing air, would it?

I didn't do anything too special. Just turned it on at setting 5 with the mouthpiece off and let it heat up for the full 18 seconds before auto shutoff. Held it vertical with my flashlight against a black background and watched for vapor. Sniffed at the beginning and the end, didn't smell anything after the last cycle where it stopped offgassing.

I think the airpath is open enough for my basic approach to work without having to pull air through it. If it had kept offgassing with no end in sight, I would have hooked up a vacuum cleaner to a piece of tubing with some duct tape and finished it off that way.

I suppose it is possible that by not pulling air through, I didn't get it totally clean, but since I couldn't smell anything at the end and there was no vapor, I was satisfied. If I inhaled anything bad during my first bowl or two, I'm sure it was less harmful than what I breathe in while filling up my tank at the local gas station.

So I just received my grasshopper yesterday and currently fully medicated. I thought I'd add some more first hand reviewedness.

I've used a volcano in the past (was my first vape experience) and a plain box vape, but I feel my input is a little more average user. I've never owned a vape before this.

I got a bronze Ti, the color is more like a mix of gold and grey but still pretty. The machining is marvelous. It's a joy to hold in your hands and you feel like you've gotten hold of a piece of super secret Google tech. My hopper arrived in flawless condition. The battery came almost fully charged, it took about 5 mins to top off.

I tried a burn off and honestly didn't notice a lot of oil/nasties coming off so I jumped right in to vaping.

I have a large tolerance, but started off with maybe 3/4 of what I would use combusting. I will say that the flavor on that first rip at 3.5 is great. Second rip, getting a touch popcorn and then kinda mellows out as you go up. Highest I've gone was 4.5 because it felt stupid to go higher.

The vaping is very consistent and my abv looks 100% consistent. This is the first vape that is 100% mine so I just started a stash.

Love the ability to use while charging, I basically just leave it plugged in all the time. I did burn through the charge on the first battery kinda quick, but I was excited. I would say it would be a good idea for them to include the wall charger part of the equation as well as the cord, but I'm sure they're trying to keep the sticker price low. It just feels a little hokey, like here's your sandwich don't forget the bread.

Overall this is in an incredibly well made device. I haven't touched a ss model but I use stainless every day in my career and I LOVE the way the Ti feels. Very lightweight, very sturdy.

As for the heat...once I learned to wrap my lips just past the tip, so the whole tip is in your mouth, it became way less of a concern. The vapor itself can get warm, but really not too bad compared to the very tip of the hopper. But it only really gets hot after a couple uses and 4+

It was a long wait, but worth it in the end.

Bad idea tho, the worst things for batteries are staying at 100% charge constantly and staying dead (DEAD dead, not "it hit the built-in cutoff" dead). Fast way to kill them. Most common example of this is a laptop that is left plugged in all the time, and then when you take it off the charger the battery tanks super fast and doesn't hold a charge worth a damn. Sure it's not an internal battery but they're custom batteries and nobody likes spending money they don't have to spend. It's not gonna start killing the battery if you leave it like that for a few days but if you leave it on the charger well past when it's done charging constantly you will notice a decrease in expected battery life (both in how long it holds a charge and how many battery cycles it goes through before dropping in performance).

On the other hand you do have a really pretty pup if that's yours in your avatar. Have a lovely pitty myself, most loyal dog I've ever had in my life. Hooray for blockheads :)

Hmmm... this is interesting. Could it be due to batch variation? Or is it that most of the residual manufacturing oils get taken care of during the extra processing and anodizing on the color Grasshoppers?

If all of the color Grasshoppers don't need much of a burnoff, that would be a pretty nice cherry on top.

Ok I just about can't fight the VAS myself now.... these past few reviews have been killer....

I'm just about ready to pull the trigger but I really still would very much like to know what the inside diameter of the chamber is....specifically can I fil a 10 mm tube inside... like the size of the inhalater caps Polyimide or glass..... prefer glass........ I know why would I defeat the stealth factor..... cause I can...

If the 4" glass caps from the Inhalater fit inside the chamber.... I'm in..... can anyone try a Inhalater cap and post their findings.... someone a while back posted that it was 1mm and I was so hoping they really meant to write 10mm..?

TIA....:peace:

I pulled on it while empty at 3...probably not the smartest idea, but I wanted to see if I could taste something and I didn't get much, a touch but it was light.

I recall someone saying it was a tad over 8mm. What about buying some 7 or 8mm empty gelatine pill capsules (or empty some full ones) and loading your herb into 1 or 20 of them. Just pull them apart and pour/tap the herb into the oven. Loading them might take as much as 10 seconds each, but when you're out and about it should only take 5 or 6 seconds to empty a load into the oven and toss the empty capsule. It's also handy packaging if you need to eat the evidence in a hurry. It would make swallowing it pretty easy by comparison to loose herb

I used to do that with inhalater the hand filling, when i sent my carpet for cleaning took 5 days to get it back, they had to smoke all the leftover first...

I'll suggest it again...just use a salt spoon. It's a "mini" spoon that works great for filling vape ovens. Others have posted pictures and links for similar scoops, but they're all bigger than a salt spoon.

Hey @Ratchett - people need you and your toys! Any closer to a filling tool for the gh?

Just tried and INH caps do not fit. There just a little to big.

I second the salt spoon suggestion. I paid $6 for a sterling silver one on eBay and it works great for filling the small heater pan on my Vapman. I fill a small round bottom glass bowl with ground bud and the spoon makes manipulating the material super easy. The VM comes with a tiny funnel piece to aid filling but I don't bother using it at all any more, the spoon is just too quick and easy to bother with anything else. Although it doesn't deliver much per load, a full measure will overflow the VM's tiny pan but I just hold the VM over the glass bowl while filling and any excess falls back into the stash so no problem. I think 3 or 4 scoops should fill the GH chamber and would take just seconds. I use about half a measure per load in the VM with good results and 2 loads (one spoonful total) gets me nice and mellow. I hope the GH is just as miserly with the bud, if so, one spoon will suffice for my solo puffing but loading a full chamber for sharing should be equally quick and easy. The spoon also allows easy consistent dose sizing, not as accurate as a scale perhaps but good enough to know if your tolerance is increasing for example or if you've loaded enough for a short road trip.

If you would like to try one out, look for a spoon with a round bowl (like the bottom half of a ball cut in half) rather than a traditional teaspoonful shaped long and narrow bowl. The round bowl dumps its load into the round chamber mouth much better than another I used with a long narrow bowl.

I was just looking at the salt spoons on eBay and some of them are very unique, like the ones with the animals on top. Would be cool if we could get one with a grasshopper on top or designed into the handle. I'm sure it'd be hard to do, but would definitely set it apart from the rest.

Hey @Ratchett - people need you and your toys! Any closer to a filling tool for the gh?

Already have a fully parametric loading funnel designed in my CAD software:

py7ndly.png

This funnel is designed to sit over the GH while loading (there's a 10mm long sleeve so it doesn't rock around while loading the GH).

Currently I made this super small with a 25mm funnel, but I can easily modify the design to work with a MagicFlight Finishing Grinder if requested.

I've got the funnel designed and ready to print, but I need someone with a pair of digital calipers to accurately measure the outside diameter of the oven (without the mouthpiece, naturally). That lucky person will receive a free prototype funnel to confirm it fits the GH. Once I have direct confirmation the funnel fits perfectly, I'll be listing it on my store

Suggestion for Version 2.0:

Implement a “stealth mode” to allow the user to disable the LED’s. To eliminate the need for hardware redesign, and also to keep it intuitive, the user interface would be via the click mechanism as follows: instead of just clicking, if the button is held down for at least 5 secs it puts the GH into stealth/dark mode. Holding down again toggles it back to LED’s enabled.

Very nice. Perhaps also a small haptic feedback feature (such as when activating capacitative device buttons on Android phones) could be implemented for indicating temperature reached, low battery, etc. in such a mode.

SS grasshopper pre-ordered!

Was suspicious first but the last reports changed my mind. VAS is kicking again!

At least you have VAS, the GH will be only my second vape. But I have a problem with buying glass pieces.

So I guess I have a bad case of GAS :uhoh:
