Herb Grinders

Does anyone have a link to a good pyramid tooth grinder (like the one that comes with the volcano), that is metal. I find it's easiest to get whatever grind consistency you want, from coarse, to fine powder, with these teeth, but it being acrylic makes it harder to clean (no iso soaks) and risks chipping the tops of the teeth into the bud. Would rather not vape a tiny bit of plastic.

I haven't had much luck finding anything like this beyond really cheap ones on eBay that look super sketchy. Except this:

eeek... aweful IMO. I see dust blast out of the grinder every time he uses the drill. Totally overkill, and may be wasteful depending on how careful you are.

Compton Owners:
Whats the verdict?
How are they breaking in?
Do you like them as much as your previous grinds?

The only thing I really don't like is the missing teeth for loading.
I'd rather manually break my own shit down than loading large pieces anyway.

Anyone have anything to add regarding how the Comptons are doing after a little use? I am on the fence and only a few hours left on mass drop.

I impulse ordered one of these

a couple weeks ago. Should be here in a week or 2. I saw the pyramid shaped teeth and the price and couldn't pass it up. Don't know how well it'll work but I'll report back once I get a chance to test it out. It'll probably just go straight into the unused grinder stash lol.

I can't add anything with regards to usage, but I hope they're good as I jumped on the massdrop buy.
Fingers crossed the import duty/vat/handling fee are overlooked lol

Now that I own a large Titanium Space Case 2-piece, as well as medium and small 2-piece Space Cases in the 'standard' finish, I have to say each of Space Case's sizes feels just a little off to me. If the small was a couple millimeters bigger, it would probably feel all right. If the medium was a couple millimeters smaller, it would probably feel all right. And the large would probably feel nice to me if it was maybe 1/4" smaller.

Now that I have an Arizer Air (since yesterday), which seems to be becoming my #1 vaporizer (of two), it seems that a somewhat coarse grind may help me avoid inhaling plant particles (again). Consequently, I have begun using the Diamond Grind 5-piece exclusively, instead of grinding in an SCS or Space Case, then dumping, sifting, and storing in the Diamond Grind.

This is following my tendency to prefer function over form. I mean, I have eight high-end grinders, yet I find myself using this second-tier grinder over and over, exclusively. Now if Santa Cruz Shredder offered an almost identical grinder to this (particularly regarding the screens), but naturally in the style of an SCS, I would have a reason to buy another Santa Cruz Shredder.

You need to get some screens for the Air stems, makes a world of difference @Aimless Ryan

After some use I think I prefer the old teeth design to the new one. I can't notice any easier grind and a ton more herb gets stuck on the teeth compared to older design. I also had my shredder lock up on me for the first time while trying to shred a gram of some fresh Lindsay OG. Took quite a bit of effort to get it unstuck.

Hey, sorry I haven't had the opportunity to use mine too much but so far I really like it. It feels well made and the small model is much more portable than my SCS 3pc.

You can remove the screen and effectively use the Compton like a 3pc which i love. The bowl remains sleek without the screen so there aren't many 'nooks' for herb bits to really accumulate in like there are with other grinders with removable screens.

I like the loading area, especially with the smaller size. It's been convenient. Less sticky trichomes on my fingers and less grinder lock. I like manually breaking down my herb but the loading area has been useful for when I'm short on time or on-the-go. I also enjoy seeing my nugs alive and whole as they are entombed in their sarcophagi  (i got the gold color lol)

The grind seems finer than what I get with my SCS. Turning action is smooth and I actually prefer the grip on the Compton to the SCS, which is my favorite grinder. I haven't had to poke herb through the grinder holes or anything like that yet either, which is a plus.

I've been mostly using the Compton for sativa during the day and my SCS for indica at night. They suit these roles well for me.

Other grinders I'ved owned: SCS, Space Case, Mendo Mulcher, Ergo, Cosmic Case, Sharpstone, MFLB finishing grinder, wood grinder

Too early to say if the Compton is better than the SCS overall but it's definitely better than pretty much every other grinder I've tried. :2c:

Here are some not-necessarily-obvious details I noticed yesterday with my three 2-piece Space Cases:
  • The lids on the small and medium are the same height, but the base of the medium is taller than the base of the small. (EDIT: I'm talking strictly about the height of the outer surface, which excludes the male part.)
  • The base of the medium and large are the same height, but the lid of the large is taller than the lid of the medium.
  • Since the small grinder's lid is taller than its base, it's easier for me to use this grinder upside down (because I need more to hold on to with my left hand than I do with my right hand).
In case that helps anyone.

This discovery might actually motivate me to give the small another chance, upside down (someday). If the base of the small was the same height as the medium and large, I would probably like the small quite a bit.

Nice review @Yoosh I was worried about the grind on the smaller compton 4 piece as it has those weird U shaped drop down holes. I think I might order one up real soon!

I have several good grinders- spacecase and santa cruz etc. But none of them have a fine grind. Is there anything other than the MFLB finisher that grinds finer than these?

From my experience a 2 piece grinder will allow you to achieve a much finer grind than a 3 or 4 piece grinder. The main reason; you can grind as long as you like without having your material drop through the grinder into a storage compartment. I know many people grind holding the grinder upside down for the same reason, but a two piece allows you to keep grinding until you reach the consistency you trying to achieve. Believe it or not, the acrylic grinder from Storz & Bickel does an amazing job. You can find them for $4.90 at VapeWorld. The shark tootth configuration is unbeatable for a very fine grind. I would love to see a quality made shark tooth metal grinder. Now if you're looking to grind until you have dust try using an electric coffee, spice, and nut grinder like this: http://www.amazon.com/KRUPS-Electri...867&sr=8-1&keywords=krups+coffee+grinder+burr Just be careful not to hold the button down too long or you will end up grinding to the consistency of baby powder. :o

On a side note, it really sux when you patiently wait a long time for a special order; when it finally arrives you find that the company messed up your order. How does a company put on your invoice 3 piece grinder, and then send a 4 piece grinder? :bang:

For all the points you mention, there are IMO more important factors and reasons NOT to use a 2 piece.
Number 1 reason I hate two piece grinders is loss. You cannot load directly from a 2 piece. You must dump material onto a piece of paper or a tray, have to handle your material more, and loose pollen and trichs all over the place in the process.

So for me- NO 2-pieces.
Id rather grind upside down till fine, flip it into a secondary loading chamber and use an inhale method to load my stems, never touching the materials at all except to move them from a Jyarz to the grinder.

You are moving from one container to another...how is that different? Why would you lose anything if you are careful? Use a food grade espresso brush like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OORIAM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 that way you can brush out your grinder thoroughly and not lose a crumb. A four piece grinder has all kinds of nooks and crannies for things to get lost. In addition to that by design they are made to separate stuff that stays together in a two piece grinder. I love when people tell you they use a four piece grinder (with more compartments to clean) and tell you they are better than a two piece. It simply isn't true. It's all about how thorough and careful you are when you use it. There is a place for a four piece and a two piece (or 3 piece) grinder. Its all about personal preference. Its not about loss. Its not like there is a black hole in a two piece grinder where things are lost forever. You grind; dump it on a clean piece of typing paper, and then use the espresso brush to put it into a storage container.
The only downfall with an acrylic grinder IMHO is you can't use alcohol to clean them or it will discolor the acrylic, and may make it brittle over time. The easiest way to clean an acrylic grinder is to soak it in dishwashing liquid, or simple green overnight; then use an old toothbrush to scrub it clean...looks like brand new when you're done...

You are very welcome. :)

Make sure you keep pressure on the S&B grinder when using it since it does not have a magnet to hold it together. In some ways not having a magnet is nice. You never have to worry about the magnet falling out, and you don't have things getting trapped in the dent where the magnet sits. Just my :2c:...

A S&B 2-piece can make bud into powder if you completely dry it out first.

I find grinding with the S&B acrylic 2-piece, and then pouring the ground herb into the 3rd chamber of a metal 4-piece works perfectly. It allows you to get a finer grind, and also collects a bit of keif as you move the grinder around and load your bowls, but doesn't remove too much, so it isn't noticeable from one load to the next. Over time, it will fill the kief chamber though.

I'm feeling especially stupid today as I move around this site. I have quite a bit of kief in one of my grinders- not the Santa Cruz because that's a 3 piece and doesn't collect it. Now what do I do with the collected powder?

Thanks! The holes have worked well this far, I'll let you know if it starts clogging or providing any uneven grinder. It's definitely better than the little circles on my ergo/sc/mendo grinders which have similar teeth

I've also been interested in the cali crusher homegrown and phoenician grinders but they are PRICEY lol

Hi, what vapes do you have? Some vapes are better at handling kief than others. I personally like it for an occasional 'elbow pack' in my eq. You can also try sprinkling it over or mixing it into a normal packed bowl for an added boost.

It's also great for making edibles or other products if you're interested in that :)

Put it in a salt shaker with a few grains of rice to keep it from clumping and sprinkle it on food?
Or just vape it, that's always nice too:science:

New to the forum, first post. I've been using my 2 piece SCS for about 2 years and it's been mostly fine. It's the medium size and being so shallow depth wise I find it annoying to grind as my fingers are always bumping together. I thought I'd try a 4 piece and based on reputation bought the small space case scout because of it's supposed ability for finer grind.

Well it arrived this morning and I'm sad to report I see debris and what could be metal filings on the bottom thread section by the kief catcher. Note, there is no debris on the section that screws together where the herb collects. Here are some pics for those that may find it useful:

Read a lot of good things about Spacecace. Are they really all that much better?
