Discontinued Zion vaporizer

I haven't read through all the 68 pages, but this looks like a really good vape that may be what I'm looking for. However, I'm wondering:

How accurate and precise is the temperature control, and what can be expected from a good/ground breaking portable of this size? Ideally I would prefer digital temp control, but are there obvious advantages to just having a knob in stead?

Also: What's the short version of what I need to know about batteries, charging etc. I live in Europe.

Many thanks.

Ah you made it @biohacker. Nice to see you.

Have yourself a good look around & soak up some of this good stuff we got goin' on over here :)

@dormouse - I find that the voltage dial is extremely accurate & easy to adjust. Digital displays encourage you to believe what you see and in some cases can even cause conflict with the results you produce. Instead, the Zion allows you to put your trust in what you taste and feel, and when you find one of the many Zion sweet spots you will seriously wonder what all those numbers really ever meant. You have a full and easily adjustable monster range at your fingertips in the form of that innocuous looking little dial :brow:

Simples.

As for batteries - charge them, use them till there's no more power, charge them again. Rinse & repeat as required :D

Nothing special or anything to worry about there.

Welcome to the party gents & happy reading.
I think you're in for a real treat

There is no precise temperature control. The knob sets the power level, not the temperature. The heater quickly reaches a temperature determined by the power level, then stabilizes. If you hold the button down, the temperature will eventually start to rise, but slowly. This characteristic means that you can take long draws without fear of overheating.

I think digital or precise temperature control is vastly overrated. In my opinion, the desire for it comes from a misunderstanding of how cannabis vapourizes and how temperatures are measured. Vapourization isn't binary, so selecting 200°C doesn't give you a noticeably different result than selecting 201°C or even 205°C. Temperature selection simply alters the ratio of the active components, it does not magically eliminate or produce a compound at a specific temperature. No vapourizer measures the temperature of the herb. Some claim to come quite close and I have no reason (in most cases) to believe otherwise, but thanks to the effect I just described, I question the value of knowing that temperature.

The way to use the Zion (and I think the way the vast majority of people use precise temperature control) is to find the sweet spot and stick to it. Some will want two or three spots for different occasions, but knowing exactly what the vapourizer thinks that temperature is does not make a difference. What's required is the ability to consistently find the setting that you prefer. I believe the Zion makes this easy.

The batteries are the same 18650s used in flashlights and many vapourizers, both cannabis and e-cigs. You need one that can sustain at least 20 amps. There are several brands out there that can do this but the world of 18650s is a wild one. Best to ask here before ordering anything.

@dormouse yeah what Veg and Pak said, if you make it through some of the thread (could always go backwards!) I've done several posts about the effects at various spots on the dial, I typically temp step my loads, and while it measures voltage I've found it extremely intuitive for translating spots on the dial to temps, and you get a full spectrum with the knob. As Pak said, I'm actually thinking the voltage seems better to measure temp/effects than a digital display even, I definitely adapted to it quite quickly (though I do have an Underdog and vvps, this is smoother though with more variety even). It will be interesting to see "precision" temps with GH, though even there it doesn't seem so 100% accurate either...

Man I wish I had some GSC over here again to try in Zion, been a long while, such a fun strain!

Very true. In our mapping of the temperature profiles below we found that there was a 150 F degree temperature difference between the center and outside wall of a load. This makes sense as the center typically chars first. This is due to the drag forces causing reduced velocity at the outer wall reducing the heat load there. Conversely the velocity through the center of the load in increases thereby increasing the heat load there. To @pakalolo point the devices that have temperature settings are only approximations of the actual temperature that are extrapolated. @VegNVape said it best really, with the Zion it's an organic process where each person finds there own place(s) on the dial. But for you engineering nerds the voltage tolerance is +/- .02 V

@VegNVape it a dirty job but I will carry on to the not so bitter end.
Not saying the grey mush will retain any of it but at least every now and again something will trigger some distant memory form page 20 ish lol

Had to come in here to say congratulations to @RastaBuddhaTao :rockon:

Been watching your thread and I am very excited for you.

I feel like your products are a part of the Vaporizer 2.0

Lets talk design/industry someday and maybe we can find some synergy!

Damn diggin this so much, two great companies spreading the love!

I hope anyone interested in Zion checks our Triihouse and vice versa, both are building line ups of pure powerful vapes, and ofcourse both use all wood/steel/glass construction... One Torch power, one battery power, both simple, versatile, and elegant, yet deliver some of the most full bodied hits available imo

The idea if the two of you talking shop is exciting to say the least, thank you for the extra beeswax butter btw Tommy! Now I've got plenty to use some on Ziggy as well...

Zion is a game changer IMO. Disruptive tech.

It really is the power of a desktop in the palm of your hand.

It is a tool of essential extraction, and an extension of your will. Sip, session, grip and rip, however you want to drive, the Zion responds in kind.

It must not get hot enough to concern anybody either, because 69 pages and counting and not one complaint of that nature by my count.

All this is possible because of a novel heater technology, unique in the world of vaporizers.

All the rest of the wonders, the pure vapor path, the beautiful wood, the standard fittings, the user replaceable non-proprietary batteries, is because you, our fellow FCitizens, deserve it, and frankly your a damn picky lot of SOB's and won't stand for anything less.

And you shouldn't have to.

And we will never ask you to.

Because we love you.

Heh heh heh, and we love you too, Karmawhore! :)

So I am noticing that I vape differently with Venus depending on what I am after. If I happen to have a tasty strain (I don't right now :( ) I spend significant time in the low temps, and Venus treats me well there. Lots of ability to pull flavor. Then I head up to higher temps for bigger hits.
If it isn't a tasty strain I may start out at 75% and stay there. I am finding that if I keep hitting and stirring at 75% I can get very brown avb and exhaust everything the strain has to give, without risking scorching and certainly no combustion.
If I am in a hurry for some reason, I may start at 100% and modulate with my draw speed and by feathering the button. I HAVE exhausted a bowl in 1 hit this way, tho I am usually not in that much of a hurry. This kind of hitting is way better through water. I actually spend a lot my time going through water.
Through water I tend to use an ELB that gives me about .1g packed loosely. That seems a good amount for the way I use Venus. But if I want a bigger bowl I drop in a Zion screen and push it back further and I can get about .3g in a stem or M2M.
Variety is the name of the game with Zion.

And breath....Now I can give my FC widow some well deserved attention. It can't have been easy trying to spark up a conversation with me glued to the screen. I have also vaped far to much whilst getting thru the 69 pages.
I pm'd RBT and had a quick conversation with him apologising for not having read 57 pages. I've also sent him some more ideas and questions but will leave him alone as his time is precious.
It's been fun, but for now I must leave you all as the Zion is too big for my personal taste.
Thank FC he has something more to my liking so maybe I will see some of you on the 18650 and 350 threads. Of course I shall follow this thread and anything I need to know I will ask. I've got ideas that I will share with you. Just not yet as that would be too easy.
As I told RBT and @HD Springer, nice talking to you today, my mind is currently doing a Zillion mph. Why wouldn't I want a vaporizer where the designer is actively encouraging me to customize my unit. The idea of being able to buy a kit and design and making the outer body is mind blowing. Lets hope it all comes together as a Pimp my Vape thread is going to be fanfukintastic.

Hello FC! I've been lurking on this thread for a while and just recently decided to make an account specifically for this vaporizer since it looks so promising and amazing. My question is for @RastaBuddhaTao, does the lifetime warranty still apply if I get the preorder for $169? All I see on the website is a 3 year warranty. I was under the impression that you extended it until August 16th.

Many Thanks,
Jermz

Not RBT, but yes, this is how it works. You get the lifetime warranty as well as the lower price if you order soon.

I'm new here - been lurking for months, following the GH threads as a pre-orderer, but I'm wishing for one of these Zion babies now. :luv: (Maybe instead of..?) I love the idea of the simple design and materials, low heat, and stealth isn't a concern. My husband and I haven't vaped before - but a few comments in the GS thread made me worry, like that it wouldn't make a good only or first vape, plus the heat and failure rates. I was almost going to go with a FF or an UD before I signed-up for the GH, but the Zion looks like the perfect combination of the three!

Only problem is I'm in Aussie-land.. can anyone confirm that if the shipping says $0, then they will not ship here? :(

The batteries are a good deal too, they're $20 each here, but the charger needs to be 12 or 24 volt DC for me, since I'm up solar creek without an inverter atm. :D
