How long can edibles be left outside before they go bad?

Ok, so I make an edibles from time to time and I eat some and save the rest, but I keep them in a jacket pocket which is inside of a cool closet.

I cannot freeze them or keep them in the fridge for fear that someone might eat it by mistake. So I rather play it safe then sorry.

Visibly to me it still looks good and they still taste ok, but I dont want to take the risk of getting sick off from it.

so my question is, Can an edible still be good from one week to the next, if not frozen or kept in the fridge?

If it's a cookie or brownie just keep it in a plastic bag for up to a week. The sugar in the treat will act as a preservative. Too long and it may taste stale and grow mold. If it's in too warm of an environment it may get mold sooner. If you make something like candy it may last longer depending on what it is.

If you make canna coconut oil it will last a long time without refrigeration. I like the taste of the batch that I made. It has a nutty flavor, I take a tablespoon full, it does take a couple hours to kick in and kicks in more over time and lasts around 6 -7hrs. I was on a trip and it worked out great.

How long do you normally keep your food stashed in your clothes?

Not sure if youre joking around or not, I found it funny when I read what you wrote. But I usually keep it in my jacket pocket for about a week. Thats because I only use MJ once a week and I only make enough for 1 or 2 doses, but I was also interested in making a larger batch and stashing about a months worth in there.

@CarolKing, thank you for your response. It was helpful.

I am just pulling your leg.

Maybe you could try something like this that can be left in the fridge.

It'll pretty much last the same amount of time that it would without the herb in it. Really depends on what it is. Before you consume it, ask yourself if you would consume it if it wasn't enhanced with stuff that gets you high. :)

If ya got any minors in the house I would strongly recommend using a safe at all times. You can also put a small fire safe into your freezer or refrigerator as well. But you understand your situation for better than I, maybe you are hiding it from a wife or husband (for shame, LOL). But a kid getting their hands on your stash would definitely definitely not be good, legal or not.

Best of luck.

Thats a great suggestion! @4tokin...

@HomeFree, yes there are minors in the house. Thats what I am really scared of. I do my best to make sure that they dont know anything about that and from what I have read eversince edibles are becoming more popular there has been a rise in pets, kids and people who dont use MJ consuming these edibles by accident. That to me is pretty scary and also the high from edibles is way different from vaping, especially in larger dosis. That would peobably be a nightmare.

Also, this is what I mean. Its an MJ cookies. Usually cookies you dont have to refrigerate and they last a pretty long time outside. They start going stale after sometime but you can still eat them. I was wondering if this works thhe same with MJ cookies, Im sorry if I wasnt specific enough.

You will know right away if an edible goes bad. In my case, some funfetti space cake turned into rancid, cat-piss smelling mush.

Yes, I can imagine cake. Most of the time that we have a cake made and leftover in our home, it usually lasts alittle less than a week before it starts smelling and tasting funny.

How long did you have it out for?

Right now, I Just have my abv soaking in olive oil until I decide what to do with it.

It was out for about 3 weeks. Each piece was individually wrapped, however.

If I may make a suggestion, you should avoid olive oil and instead use coconut oil. It is (arguably) healthier for you and it is miles apart from olive oil in terms of "absorbing" cannabinoids.

Also, since you are worried about minors gaining access to your medibles, you could make a batch of coconut oil and stash it away in your closet or drawer for months at a time without worrying about it spoiling. I have coconut oil in a cabinet thats upwards of four months old. Best thing is, you can use as little or as much as you'd like per session. Spread some on to toast, top some pasta with it, or fry up some eggs. The options are endless..

This is in fact a great idea. The only thing is that for some reason, coconut oil makes my stomach hurt, as I have tried it in the past. Then it just ruins my high and makes it uncomfortable.

If you are comparing it to store bought cookies that are meant to not be refrigerated with god only knows what chemicals and preservatives are in there to facilitate this.

For homemade cookies, they probably only stay fresh a week or two in the fridge. You normally freeze bigger batches to keep them tasting fresh and make them last.

If you are making these yourself, I wouldn't leave it out for more than a few days before it likely starts to go stale. Then you have mold to worry about.

That's right anything you buy in a store usually have preservatives in them. What you make will not have as long of a shelf life as store bought treats. Depending on what you are making makes a big difference.

You mentioned you couldn't freeze them. Try looking into making candy something like gummy candies or carmels. It's easy to put canna oil into chocolate but that melts easily. I've made coconut haystacks before, they last as long as they don't get too warm. Probably a 2 week shelf life not refrigerated. I think that would be your best best. You could try making capsules too. They could be easily put away.

Here's a pic of the Haystacks. I just made canna coconut oil and put it in the chocolate. I kept them refrigerated, they didn't last long.

Thanks @CarolKing , I have read about capsules and they are pretty neat and stealthy, but chocolate and gummies?.......now youre talking!!! I reread the thread and saw you had mentioned candy in earlier posts, but when you said chocolate and gummies, I got the gist of it, Im definately going to try this.
