Herb Grinders

Do you have the first generation or second generation?

pretty sure it is second gen. got the bigger trapezoid (i think) holes. also has the roor logo on top - not sure what that means.. i really like the chunkiness and the threadless design is really nice for the time it saves, though it does easily come apart if grinding in that direction. the screen it came with seems to be letting through some orange hairs as well as kief, so I'm not sure how fine it is. thinking about just using it as a three piece. The main thing i don't like about it is that the herb being ground seems to not want to fall through the holes and gets stuck to the teeth. i was expecting to only have to turn a few times and have all my herb ground nicely, but i find that i am grinding for a full minute now trying to get it all to fall through. also the grind is not as fine scs, cosmic, or my gf's space case. i really want to like this grinder, considering what i paid for it and how long i had been eyeing it. it still gets the job done and does have its own perks, but i was expecting top of the line results. if you like the design, look, and feel, then by all means add a phoenician to your toolkit - i really do love the design - still can't stop playing with it..

@Aimless Ryan i tried mixing up my small SCSs and had the same problem the magnet polarity was different on e lids. From your pics it looks like the matte orange has the old tooth design and the blue has the new.

I need one of the Matte coloured shredders now! Some guy on IG offered me a lot of money for my small copper 4 piece so I could be in the market soon for one or two new ones!

Picking up my replacement small shredder this afternoon at the post office.

I think I figured out why the magnet on the orange SCS feels weaker than the magnet on the blue SCS.

tT5Rf0J.jpg

Look at the magnets on the lids. Can you tell that the magnet on the blue lid sticks out a little bit, while the magnet on the orange lid sticks in a little bit?

It's hard to tell just by looking at the lids, but this picture seems to indicate that what I said in the previous paragraph is probably what's going on. So I checked by running a fairly long, sharp-tipped object over the magnets. Confirmed.

After considering these things, there doesn't seem to be any difference between these magnets. Rather, I suspect the orange grinder simply leaves a fairly large gap between the magnets when the lid is closed, while the blue grinder doesn't. Which makes the orange magnet feel weaker.

Do you have it yet or not, whatitdew? Don't leave us hanging.

Picked up the replacement shredder. It still has the vertical grooves but it is a lot smoother, still not quite as smooth as my older one but that could be because it has been broken in. All in all I'm happy with the replacement. I do notice as has more of noise when turning I ink it's just the friction ring but it's something to keep me eye on.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet to compare teeth but tomorrow I'm hitting up the dispensary for the monthly re-up.

Got to look at a compton grinder two piece In Person today. Really nice and would definitely be my 2 piece of choice if I ever needed one. The notched grips are awesome.

Are the teeth all the same size, or are there some that are smaller than the others?

you might not know that grinder does a course grind in one direction and fine in th other

I'm not sure what you mean when you say in one direction vs. the other. Do you mean turning it clockwise vs. counter clockwise, or flipping the grinder upside down vs. right side up?

I've seen a lot of busted teeth, shitty coatings and punctured screens but I think that's the First time I have ever seen that happen with the magnets of a herb grinder. That sucks after just going through the customer service gauntlet. @Aimless Ryan. Maybe super glue or silicone it back in?

I wish. But the wacky polarity grinders are my original small and my replacement small. This is a mini 4-piece and a mini 2-piece. I have had this [broken] rasta grinder since Monday or Tuesday. I love it, too.

This has gotta have an easy fix, right?

EDIT: Super glue appears to have worked.

I don't know. Here's what I do know: Delivery took a week longer than expected because EZVAPES was out of this grinder when I ordered. It arrived six days ago. Which suggests to me that it should be new (second generation?).

It has a much finer screen than any of my other three 4-piece Santa Cruz Shredders, if that reveals any clues.

ADDED LATER: I'm inclined to think there probably is no "first generation" or "second generation." Owning five Santa Cruz Shredders, I see many differences between them all. I get the impression this company constantly makes small design changes and/or produces several different "sub-models" of each grinder model. For example, my original small 4-piece has at least a few vast differences from my replacement small 4-piece. (I bought my original 4-piece less than a month ago.)

Having super glued the magnet back into the lid of the grinder last night, I'm now wondering if maybe I should've put at least a couple pieces of paper in between the magnets while the glue dried, in an effort to keep the magnets from contacting each other while I use the grinder. I'm now a little worried that with the two magnets physically contacting each other, I might end up with some tiny pieces of metal in my herbs, as well as worn magnet surfaces. Anyone have any thoughts about that?

When I look at my other grinders, it appears the magnets do not actually touch. Which makes sense to me.

I just had an idea. I'm going to mix up a little flour and water and put a small piece of dough between the magnets of each my grinders. This should show me very clearly whether or not the magnets actually touch when the lid is fully closed. And if the magnets don't touch, this will show me how much space there is between the magnets when the lid is closed.

EDIT: Sorry for double-posting. I didn't realize I had posted a couple hours ago. (Should I give credit to the AroMed?)

If you look at the pictures on this page you can see the new design has larger holes, and the shape of the teeth is different. If you read the description, the last line says "Innovative new tooth design."

Well, I see clearly that the bottom teeth configuration in the picture on their web site is different than the bottom teeth configuration on both of my small 4-pieces. However, my two small 4-pieces have different teeth configurations than each other in the lid (yet neither of my grinders has a teeth configuration like the one in the picture). I believe whatitdew indicated that one of my grinders has the newer teeth configuration, while the other has the older teeth configuration. EDIT: Also, the teeth are shaped differently between my two small grinders.

I hadn't noticed this before now, but the holes that make up the inner ring of holes on my orange grinder seem to be a slightly different shape than the same holes on my blue one; barely noticeable. (You can't really see the holes in this picture, but you can see the tooth arrangement.)

tT5Rf0J.jpg

Wait a minute. I just figured something out: The second picture on this page, in which you can only see the bottom teeth and the top of the lid, is a picture of a large SCS. I noticed that tooth configuration right away, but at that point I just figured they were trying to make the small more like the large.

Picture: My large SCS pretending to be the small SCS allegedly pictured on the linked page.

How many and what size SCS's do you have? Do you have one of the 3 piece models? They have the 4 piece large on Massdrop right now for $61.37 including shipping. It's only for the glossy colors though...is it a good price? Would you recommend it, or do you prefer the smaller sizes? https://www.massdrop.com/buy/santa-cruz-shredder-large?s=santa cruz shredder

Vital,
I have the SCS small 3 piece, the only size currently available in a 3 piece.
They call it small but I'd call it medium.

I find the large too big, unless you grinding large amounts at one time.
Some like the feel of the large but I much prefer the small.

Same with 4 piece issue--- I find no need/desire to screen the kief into a 4th compartment. I want all the goodies right now. Again, some love saving the kief...

Do you leave the screen in your 4 piece small SCS's?

Vital,

Large 4-piece Santa Cruz Shredders seem to go mostly for $65-$70 on Amazon, but I have seen at least one for as low as $60. So I'd say the deal you mentioned is a good deal, but I bet it's not hard to get the same deal just about anytime you want it if you go through one of the vapor-related web sites and use one of many easily obtainable coupon codes.

I haven't used the large in a few weeks, but I do love to just pick it up and play with it every once in a while. It's almost worth it just for that. But I'm probably never going to need it for its capacity to process and store herbs. Furthermore, I think you would have to be a mega stoner to really ever need that size.

Here's what I have from SCS:

1 mini 2-piece
1 mini 4-piece
2 small 4-pieces
1 large 4-piece

Even though they all probably have one or two qualities that bug me, they're all freaking awesome. I don't have a 3-piece SCS, and I don't think I'm ever going to buy one, but it seems to me everyone who does have one loves it.

Something interesting I'm beginning to discover is that I might actually like my Diamond Grind 5-piece grinder quite a bit. Since I decided yesterday that I might like a fairly coarse grind for the AroMed, I decided to give the Diamond Grind a second chance. This grinder is nothing remotely fancy, but it appears to produce quite a bit of light colored kief; kief that's too big to pass through the really fine screen in my mini SCS.

I admit that I know very little about kief, so I'm not going to say anything more about it right now.

Do you know what works really well with the Aromed?
This bubbler: http://www.dhgate.com/product/d020-...tor-smoking/187214099.html#s1-0-1b|1186878689 Scroll down and watch the video. Pick up a 14mm Female to 18mm Male Adapter; put the herb holder into the bubbler instead of the little bottle with the silicon tubing. For one thing its an all glass pathway instead of using a whip, and its also easier to see the display on the Aromed, because you can attach it in front or on the side rather than strapping it to the back of the Aromed. Its also more stable then the little bottle.

Thanks for the heads up...I'm going to hold off on the 4 piece for now...thanks for the information.

Vital, if you want to get a really good deal on whatever grinder you ultimately decide you want the most, I suggest you should do something like this: Find every online source that sells the grinder you want, and check the prices every day until one of the sources has the deal you can't refuse.

Having bought several grinders over the last month or so, I have spent a lot of time looking at Amazon and online vapor shops, and I have noticed that the prices change quite frequently. I thought I got a great deal when I bought my mini rasta 4-piece for about $40. But then a day or two after mine arrived, I noticed the same place (EZVAPES) was selling it for $35.

Some merchants even have different prices between their web site and their Amazon pages.

EZVapes seem to have a pretty good deal. when I ordered they had a coupon bringing my 3 piece down to $38 and change. Shipping was $5.

original scheduled delivery date was saturday. the package jumped between a couple sorting facilities in columbus, and if im lucky, will arrive today.. though i have my doubts. EZvapes had good service and shipped fairly quick but i really am not a fan of the USPS. tracking shows "sort complete" but not "out for delivery" so fingers crossed that it arrives today and i can stop having to pack everything by hand. this will be the last package i let the post office deliver to/from me.

on the plus side i've saved a bit on bud by being too lazy to hand-pack. one of my friends found my old grinder at the bottom of some recycling (lol) but at this point im just gonna keep the new one anyway. the old one (american grinder) should be interesting to compare to the SCS.
