There was a transition in programming on the major networks once Archie and Edith Bunker was in America's households. My dad was really racists and he liked All In The Family. I still sometimes will watch a rerun every now and again. They aired so many important issues of the day. One of my fav episodes was with Sammy Davis Jr.

  • To get some extra cash, Archie has gotten a job driving a taxi. Archie is in for a big surprise when one of his passengers turns out to be Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy accidently leaves his briefcase behind and arrangements are made for him to retrieve the briefcase at the Bunker house. As usual, Archie's ignorance and bigotry are full force as he nervously awaits Sammy's arrival.
I still love Rob Reiner, he would fit right in here on FC. Rob Reiner for Democratic Presidential contender, I wish. I think the last time I saw him was on Bill Maher.

Rob Reiner was a good Meathead, but for me he is one of the best directors of all time. His first seven movies: This Is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride (easily one of the best movies ever), When Harry Met Sally..., Misery, and A Few Good Men.

25 here. Almost old enough to be grouped with the 35-year-olds by @lwien. :p

The older-leaning demographic around here is great. Given the inherently-underground nature of the cannabis subculture, the more experienced and wiser perspectives can be difficult or impossible to hear from as things are reduced to small peer-oriented bubbles in the backward states. I love hearing stories from those who lived through the wilder side of the 60s (and the 70s… and the 80s…) and survived to tell the tale. These are perspectives I've never had access to outside of the internet, and never before as concentrated as here. Much respect.

Though I am a child of the 90s, I grew up with two siblings a decade older than me. That means I've got a lot of 80s in my heart. I started to feel like an old man in elementary school, defending video games of the 80s and early 90s that most of my peers had never played. I had to learn early that folks tend not to like someone who's constantly preaching about how things used to be, or the things that are "just like that thing you like… but better!"… There's an art to sharing your perspective and the things you love when you're speaking to those with different experience. I really like this comic, which is related:

Hope Mr. E doesn't mind me saying, but HUBBA HUBBA, Sexy! He shouldn't mind since he gets to see you in full Ren-Faire allure. Lucky bastard!

How did you drop more than half your weight so fast? You can't be more than 110 in that pic! And, I'm not believing that mid 50's crap either. I'm thinking more like 29.... 32, 33 tops.

btw... nice touch with the retro woody with boards on it in the background. Perfect for this thread.

LOL! 188 lbs yesterday morning. I am under the dreaded 200!
And, yes, I'm 55. That is a "bingo wing" waving in the wind there - shrinking, though... they are shrinking (no, I don't play bingo). ;)

Hubby usually helps me fish the eyes out of my cleavage after a day at the Ren Faire... the ladies usually get a bit of attention, yes :D

The whole bathroom has a surfer theme going...

If you don’t mind, lets get into a dark side of the late 60’s & the 70’s…something that’s kind of drifted off the radar 40 years on.

Do you know how we have a collective enemy these days: radical Islamic fundamentalists?

Back in the Nixon era when the country was roiled by the Viet Nam war, protests, racial strife, civil unrest etc. - the enemy was us, the longhaired/student/war protesting/pot smoker.

It was a palpable feeling – whether dealing with the police, the draft board, trying to find a job, an apartment or just trying to live your life. We were harassed & marginalized. [And the same could be said for any person of color, especially those who spoke up.]

The president of the US, Richard Nixon, was a paranoid, vindictive & evil man. Nixon & his men, including John Mitchell, his close friend & the US Attorney General, saw us as a threat to their way of life as well as their tenure in office. And they used their power to go after us (as well as anyone else they saw as an enemy).

We heard the phrase ‘Law & Order’ so often it became nauseating.

And ‘America- Love It or Leave It’ -as if they were patriots protecting the country & did not want to hear a word of dissent or any reasoned argument for change.

One example, that was revealed when Nixon’s ‘secret’ tape recordings became public, was his direct involvement in trying to deport John Lennon. Another minor but telling example: banning any song from the radio that referenced drugs.

It’s been reported that in May of 1971, President Richard Nixon told his chief of staff Bob Haldeman, “I want a goddamn strong statement on marijuana ...I mean one on marijuana that just tears the ass out of them.”

So began the surge in the war on drugs. Nixon’s motivation for ramping up this war was probably more hatred & vindictiveness than any concern for the common good. Forty-four years later, because of his small-minded vengefulness, look at all the damage that’s been done, and of course it continues.

On a lighter note…Happy Birthday Enchantre!!!

So does anyone who listed their favorite cartoons own any production animation art? It's colorful, and some great collectible Americana. Don't know if this is breaking the rules, but if you're interested I recommend you visit vegalleries.com. They have an unbelievable variety and selection of vintage animation art. And it will help you with a nostalgia fix.

Btw, I have no personal stake in that gallery. In a former life I sold animation art and only had good experiences with Mike at his gallery.

All you guys who grew up in the epicenter of counterculture...

...this coke bottle bong is how most people around me smoked their hash. Mixed with dried out Lucky Strikes and the like.

Smoked this from 12 to 15 when my friend came home from Canada like "guys guys we're doing it wrong, let's roll some spliffs!"

Yes, the bowl is made from tinfoil, no there is no water in it, yes it hurt and yes you got high as fuck with these as a kid.

So, no, everyhing wasn't better before

WOW! A plastic bottle? Not like our quick and dirty was much better. Rinse a soda can, crush it in the middle, poke some holes and go to town. Nothing like smoking off of painted aluminum. Damn, we were some dumb ass kids! We would occasionally make an apple bowl, but usually required too much time for us. Thank God the only plastic bottles we had around were 2 liter!

Pretty popular in my parts. Was even able to find a picture. For some reason we were convinced coke cans worked better, though.

That takes me back.

When I was young, my buddy said, hey man you wanna buy some of this marijuana to try? So I did all my research, I'm a studious kid, but I am a kid, how the hell am I going to smoke this?

This seemed like the best option. HOOOLY smokes that first hit I was so gone.

Er, oh so I thought. The next time I did two bowls, and then HOOOLY smokes, I did not get high my first time:lol:

We used glass bottles , I don't think plastic was
part of our " green " culture back then . We used steel
ball bearings inside to break open a hole . And no flame polish
on the created hole either , LoL .

We did ' Pin-tokes ' with a lit piece of hash on a safety pin .
Once lit , we stuck the hash in the opening and let it fill up
the entire bottle . ( while keeping a thumb on the top mp )
Then we would remove the hash and cover up the hole .
And use it as a carb for clearing the entire bottle .

We also use toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls for
DIY pipes . easier to cut an opening , add foil, and punch
out a bunch of pin size holes in the foil , to act like a screen .

Good Times ...
