Some secrets to good Qwiso

killick

But I like it!
I did a run a little while ago. About 10g 2nd wash stuff, and 5 g fresh nuggets. I find the second wash stuff left a lot more plant sludge behind in the stainless coffee filter. Will see how it turns out tomorrow. It was distinctly shadowy through the pyrex.

I also have a batch thats been evaping for a few days now. Tomorrow is the day to try winterizing with that nice bottle of EC thats resting in the freezer...

hi guys!,so i went on with my 10 gr of grinded herb and put in some 100% iso.then i put 2 coffeefilters over a glass jar and let it drip.then i put the liquid in a pyrex dish and let it evaporate(nice colour by the way).what should i do after the iso has evaporated?scrape it,put it in the freezer or in the oven?this is my second time i do this, the first time i scraped it,it was very powdery.what do you guys think?

Let it completely dry. ISO oil usually comes out powdery like that for me as well. I think it's specific to the solvent.

so i scraped it out,it looks oily and put it on parchment paper and put it in the freezer,so it becomes a little
harder so i can put it in my solo.maybe it turns out great!

@yaron I too wonder whats are the problems with grinding the materials. I read something about exposing the plant matters too much, too many "plant dust". Maybe it will clog the 10 micron filter too quick? Maybe more plant waxes, but winterisation should take care of that.

I hand grind my herbs and it takes forever. I would love to simply grind with my scs in a few minutes. Im listening to any tips; thanks in advance for sharing your experiences :)

I would definitely step down the filter size, with 10 micron being the last. Currently I go from a big mesh pasta strainer to a 25 micron then to the 10. I set one on top of the other. The pasta strainer is just to get most of the herb away from the iso as fast as possible, that way I can wash it a little longer (ie 15 sec wash and 5 sec to get it through the top filter)

I just follow the skunk farm for the consistency of the herb for qwiso. Bake @ ~ 175-200 for 20ish minutes, just to dry out. Then I break it up enough to get most of the stems out.

Reading back through the Skunk Farm instructions it looks like grinded bud is fine -

At this point, we have a choice of running the leaf whole, or reducing it in size to improve packing. Leaving it whole will produce a more pristine extraction, with the least amount of chlorophyll pickup, and we do it both ways.

When we make QWISO for vaporizing, or for a show and tell beauty contest, we always leave the leaves whole.

When reducing it in size, while it is still warm from the oven, we force the material through a pasta strainer.

First two runs I just smoked it at this point. The last couple of runs I have processed it farther to purge longer and make shatter. This is talked about in the other qwiso topic. Pretty simple. Takes a couple of hours then you are done.

the qwiso is in the freezer for almost 2 hours, how long should it be there?

You are only looking to harden it up in the freezer, so 10 minutes or so is usually enough. Unless you heat purge it longer it will not be as stable. So don't expect shatter without heat purging. Once the errl gets back up to around room temp it will be somewhat soft again. It will still hold its shape though. I recommend that you leave it uncovered in order age/purge it a bit. It may still have some iso in there. If you hear popping or taste iso while vaping, you might want to consider heat purging. Or at least heating it a little and flattening so it can air purge easier. You could probably put a piece of parchment over top and place in a zip lock or something, then just place in your pocket for a little bit (to warm it up). Then you should be able to squish it flat with your fingers. If you have trouble with the top parchment sticking place back in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Have you ever thought to use a silicone double boiler so u don't have to scrape at all

I wish someone had replied to your question. Please let me know what your results were using the silicone double boiler. I'm thinking of starting to make qwiso and a double boiler is on my shopping list, once I can clear it of course. I don't know if silicone is safe to use with isopropyl alcohol.

If anyone has some information about using these things or about silicone and alcohols, please share!

I can't recall full details, but I read somewhere last year that to use silicone with solvents you need to use 'platinum-cured' silicone, otherwise they can leach things from the silicon into your solvent.
So I always get platinum cured silicone to work with solvents.

You can get a solvent-grade parchment paper by googling PTFE sheet. You can use this to line glass...

Thanks. I will look into the paper. I didn't find any platinum cured silicone double boiler though. :(

I've never seen a silicone double boiler myself, but did experiment with qwet and qwiso on silicone. I'm not convinced you would need a full double boiler, as you can get great results just floating one tray on a second tray with hot water in it - no real need to boil.

I had high hopes for the PTFE lining pyrex, and it worked fairly well. It needed a couple of minutes in the fridge for the product to release from it. Handy stuff to have in the kitchen.

Since your the Junior Expert on Cannabis let me ask you this:
I have 5 oz of ABV
Normally I vacuum purge and yield 15 grams of Clear Shatter!

My question to you is what should my yield be if I extract with 99% ISO?
