Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Been Vapin

Can't wait to see your custom Rosin arbor press! Please make a detailed post with how it was made and how it performs when it is finished. I'm sure many other members, including myself would love to make one if it works well

But how did it cost you only $61? I thought 1 ton arbor presses were closer to $100 when I was looking the other night lol

@herbivore21 how stupid would I be to heat up a cast iron skillet on low and get it to about 300F then try and press a nug (in parchment of course) with a weight for a few seconds?

I feel so left out having never made rosin. I can't wait for the snail press any longer. I CANT TAKE IT!!!!!!!! I have to make some rosin now

I got some shit bud hiding somewhere I think so I will try this method out haha. I'll be back soon to post :)

The press came from Harbor Freight and was $39.99. Originally $69.99, minus $20 Advertising saving, and minus 20% coupon savings. It is possible to get it even cheaper if you find open box with purple price tag. If you have read this whole thread your rosin ready. I will do a detailed post of both of my designs soon. The beauty of these small units are they are cheap, effective and mobile. The 1 ton arbor rests weighs about 38 lbs lol. The clamps are awesome too. I really like the clamp hybrid.

Went a little crazy and bought 8 c clamps also. Gonna whip up some more clamp hybrids. Going to scourge all the thrift shops in the area for $3.99 hair irons. The arbor press uses a Remington s-5520 that was about $21.00 ( full retail).

Perfect. I was thrown off by when the carb cap is added. I'm assuming the sapphire insert does not work without a carb cap then, correct?

30 second heat up and digital timeout are key. When do you think it will be complete and ready to show off?

Only $60 to turn flowers into concentrates? If the function is on point this will be an A1 device

I'll have pics tommarow and function test in about 48 hours ( epoxy cure time for plates). The clamp hybrid can be done cheaper $30.00ish

Alright I came up with 2 quick solutions that might work better than the cast iron:

1. If you have a garlic press, cover the holes w/ a small coin or piece of metal (I'd cut a piece out of a can). Heat in the oven and you're good to go.

2. Heat 2 butter knives in the oven. Once hot press between a pair of pliers. Could also sandwich between cast-iron pans (also hot) but that sounds like it'd be pretty awkward and a good way to burn yourself.

@Been Vapin

Gotta love those open-box discounts! literally every arbor press at harbor freight had holes punched in it so I asked the cashier and got another 20% off. I feel they're pretty lenient with that policy...

Good suggestions. I tried the hole in a box discount and was denied. You still using the arbor press?

Just pressed this maybe .25g nug twice in the c lamp hybrid. Looks like a better yield than bubbleman was getting with the d nail press with flower.

You can see the 2nd press marks in upper and lower right hand corners.

This one juiced. Notice how almost nothing came out 2nd press. Also you can see a few premature seeds outlined in the nug. Virtually no contaminat.

Just did a dab of live rosin and was inspired on the exhale with a new version. Funny how my best ideas come when I'm really in the zone.

Nice looking setup!

I'm moving away from the arbor press personally. With my lever extension, the pressure was overwhelming the plates I could build in my living room workshop. Also w/ my longer lever it wasn't really ideal for one-man operation, since the plates were just slightly out of reach. So after seeing comparable results from the clamp, I've decided to focus my efforts on a locking-style handheld press.

Love this thread! Are we seeing similar yields compared to bho? I want to go out and get the materials to build a press like yours Been Vaping but the shatter out here is like 30$ gr. Flowers are about 70$ 1/4. I like the idea of solventless, so perhaps it's money well spent.

I've hit 20% with a good strain and grower. And also 10% from the same grower but different strain. Basically rosin is going to be quite a bit more expensive ($50/g @ 20% yield) than the $25 BHO, but it will prob taste a lot better.

Should we get better yields by pressing just the trichs farmed from bubblebags vs the intact flowers?

I'm all about this! I want to do that fresh frozen so bad I can taste it.

I have to say.. getting great results compared to qwet side by side.. yield is not far behind for me either, plus with leftover chips that you can use for so many different purposes it makes up for a slightly less yield. and the flavor. oh my god. it's not just flavor, it's a rush of terpenes that get's me lifted instantly. to the point of lightheaded.. consistently lol.

Also guys when you do your 2nd press, do 2 chips together. i almost shit myself.

omg just got GREAT IDEA involving a hydraulic car jack

running buds through bags you are not getting all the terps and cannabinoids.. lower yield to start.. then you press the hash you made from the buds and lose about 50%... doesn't seem worth it to me. just press the flowers. it'll be 10x tastier

edit: sorry for double post

edit: ok im rambling now. i notice some degradation that occurs on the parchment after second press.. using fresh parchment. slight discoloration and also you can feel the surface is no longer as nonstick when you roll the collection untensil across that part... basically, are we smoking silicone by using parchment? (ironically oven safe to 420° lol) i was never a fan of the slick pads, i threw my and slickpad and duo's out because they fuckin stank and one actually absorbed this long soak eth-extract oil that was intended for edibles and left a permanant dark green spot... yes it was purged

can I use some other surface like stainless plates and just scrape with blades? Anyone try it?

someone on IC Mag had some SS plates made to try this with. Idk if he had any success but metal plates will retain heat much longer than parchment. This will decarb the rosin until you scrape it off or cool the plates down.

I made some big stainless 1/2" thick plates and tried scraping rosin off them directly but it did not go well with small nugs for me. Getting accurate temp control is key and I gave up on the scraping idea after burning myself several times and recovering next to nothing. I think it could work on a non stick surface with tight tolerances like a roller press in a large scale operation but I have spent enough time and money chasing that dragon already. ;)

This is my rosin held up to the light. Didn't weigh this, but I can measure import hash by looking at it and I guess I pressed approx 0.4 of light Moroccan hash.

I pressed it five times, between eight and twenty seconds, then mashed all the presses together in one glob.

I've tried keeping the different presses separated before, but I found no differences in quality - only when pressed with higher heat.

The effects are creepin on a come up.

I just wanted to try this rosin thing but it's all I do now

Btw, whats the correct abbreviation? RHO?

Edit: oh yeah, if you're in Europe or the Middle East or somewhere with good hashish, feel free to PM me. This is supereasy to do.

Edit 2: oh yeah, temp was 120c

Thanks for all the tips @Bouldorado  I'll defintely have to give it a shot again when I have some free time. Or I might just buy a cheap
Flat iron and stand on it and if it lasts great, if not oh well cause it is cheap lol. I just want to taste one dab of Rosin to hold me over unit I get the dnail press haha.

That's looks sweet @Been Vapin. Very nice at home setup! Thanks for the detailed post with all the links as well

Yeah I feel like most of the time it is being called SHO. But full melt ice wax can also be considered SHO so I think RHO is a little more specific.

So is anyone using SS screens or filters with a hairpress or is that mainly for larger presses?

I have tried 90u rosin tea bags and some SS screen but not much gets on the parchment with 1/2" balled up nugs. I will just pick out the chunks by hand I think.

I had to add a four inch 2x2 block on top of my hairpress to distribute the contact pressure from my aluminum pipe more evenly or it was doomed. This let's me apply even more pressure now and I seem to be getting more juice.. I lowered my temps this last round and pressed even longer. Love this tech!:freak:

Press the flower without screen. Proceed as normal. Don't pick out any containment. When your done collecting the rosin, place the final yield inside a 25u screen, and fold it up. Press it at 150 to 200 f quickly only for 2 or 3 seconds at most. Very little residual oil will become caught in the 25 u screen. Throw screen in ever clear. You now have clean rosin.

SS screens don't work. They rip/blowout and hold heat. Only time screens are generally needed with flower are when using extreme pressures aka pneumatic press or hydraulic press.

Scored about 5 more hair irons today. One is DEad on arrival. If anyone could help with with electronics it would be appreciated.

@Bouldorado im thinking a clamp with plates like yours. Put em in oven on bake at desired temperature. Take out put in wooden hand screw clamp.

I've used 25um and 90um screens (nylon mesh) when I pressed bigger amounts (1g+). Works pretty well but the screen needs to be wrapped tight around the bud and the excess tucked under, otherwise it'll suck up your yield.

I'm no electronics expert but I'd start by visually inspecting the dead iron for breaks in the connections along the circuit boards and wires. Could be something as simple as broken solder joint. Beyond that you'll likely need a multimeter to test each component.

Not a bad idea to make a rosin press on the cheap. I wonder if those Irwin quick-squeeze clamps (or the HF version) would be a better option...those wood clamps are pretty slow to operate if I recall. Seems like it'd be pretty clunky with one hand stabilizing the plates and the other turning the handle.

I may have just found an out of the box solution though: http://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-3-4-quarter-inch-heavy-duty-cast-iron-pipe-clamp-31255.html If those plates are flush, I'm positive you could make rosin with that.

this should work too: http://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch-aluminum-bar-clamp-38183.html

I would try a keif press to prep nugs rather than just balling them. I get a perfect coin and little to no pickers with a DIY version of this:
I put something like that together this morning and it seems to increase yields on the first squish. :)

I pressed 3.5g loose leaf buds and got out .53g rosin just now. Not too shabby!

Edit: This rosin is a trip sometimes. I have a different strain that I am trying now and it smells so good and it is so sticky, but even the top buds will not release much rosin at all. I have played with temps, pressures and times but the bud is holding on to much of the oil it as it's still sticky as hell when done pressing. What I did recover is amazing but this strain does not seem to be worth pressing with my current tech? I may have to wash some to see how much is really in there or just vape it all.

Drinking out the bottle. Dabs hot off the press. @A1FBG

@Bouldorado this is a blAtant rip off of your press. You have some real fabrication skill. Did you mount your arbor press to the table? The only problem I'm having is unit tipping and too much pressure blowing out the parchment paper. Thing fucking juices. The clamp press is easier to use though like you saId. This was a repress of 7 pucks I had planned on vaporizing. They went into the trash.

Don't over think the nug puck maker. This is what I'm currently using. Need to upgraDe to 5/8 inch maybe.
