Just out of interest, wanted to get an idea of how many vaporists had abandoned flowers completely, or almost completely in favor of concentrates.

I have found that I am gravitating further and further away from my Mighty and Vapman and sticking to dabbing, I press my bubble hash for rosin rather than vaping it in the vapman. I make shatter out of my flowers and really like not having flowers about where possible.

Now that I have a top notch silicon carbide enail on a dab rig, I find there is just no need to consume my meds any other way. The effects of concentrates are much clearer and more conducive to getting shit done than flowers and I really do prefer to get rid of plant material as much as possible before heating and inhaling anything these days. The taste is also even nicer (and I get delicious flowers!) and the effects on the throat far less harsh!

So how many of you have made the switch to a flower-free or flower-reduced vaping regime? What made you make the switch?

I like flowers more. I guess some BHO and shatter doesn't taste as good to me. I notice my tolerance goes up with the waxes. It cost more money in the long run. I do buy them occasionally but I mix my herb with them and mainly using before bed.

In WA state a new law started on July 24th this year where it outlaws butane while making Waxes and BHO.

In the past six months, it's been almost all flowers. Like @CarolKing it takes my tolerance way up. So what one dab would do, will take two, and then three...

Flowers are much easier to diversify, buy multiple strains at once, and much easier to gauge the quality by look and smell. Concentrates vary too much in quality. Ultimately, I find flowers to have more consistent effects for medication. Not sure why, but it seems that way.

As a long time combustion guy, a friend turned me onto dabs about 2 years ago or less and I got hooked. Then trying to find a portable dab rig led me to FC 6 months ago and bailing on combustion all together, which in turn got me to give vaping herbs another try and chasing the flavor with some new tools.

Finding out that I love the flavor of the herbs so much while vaping it was a toss up, Flavor vs the power of the concentrated dab, I still struggle.

Now, with finally having enough quantity of herbs on hand to make rosin worth while, I am digging this new experience and find it very relaxing and fun squishing buds while trying different strains.

My usage had been mostly concentrates for nearly a year. Flowers always around but I just prefer dabs. Lately, though, I am really loving the flowers in the UD, Nano, or ZION . Having the right vape really makes the flowers more enjoyable. I definately get different effects from the two. I have 4 flavors of errl and 5 strains of flowers. I am really liking combined effects of vaping and dabbing.

I too find myself using concentrates more frequently especially in the late evening. I've found a large dab about an hour before bed insures a great night of sleep! I love the taste of high quality clean shatter. Additionally, I like the fact I can get medicated very quickly with a dab compared to huffing and puffing on a vape load of flowers..

Unlike you, I've found that I am not very productive at all if I use concentrates in the daytime..sometimes I tend to get over medicated when I have too much to get done. That's why I save titanium to the cranium for evenings only...

Oh wow yeah the WA laws are quite strict now aren't they. Hydrocarbon extracts seem to be less and less of an option!

I understand that especially solvent based extracts really do rely on the extract artist having excellent technique/methodology and materials. This can make oils really vary in quality and for the person who buys it, this may mean dabbing oils that are good enough to be noticably better than the flowers they came from is prohibitively expensive or just hard to find the right extracts.

Still, you guys really should try some rosin. Make it from bubble hash, not flowers. It will change your view very quickly!

I am quite lucky to be able to produce great concentrates myself! I often forget how much of a blessing this is! I just scraped some of my latest batch - OG Kush x Cluster Bomb absolute shatter. Yellow-orange glass/quartz type crystals that melt to nothing the second they hit the SiC. Tastes like Kush, orange, lemon and skunk. A flavor that surpasses both of the excellent batches of starting material they came from. This is whole nug extraction, no leaf, no stem, nothing but the good bits :D

I agree for sure, concentrates really do seem to vary a lot when you are buying from dispensaries and there is a lot of terrible oil going around. Better to go for quality over potency if that is the only option. I hope one day we all have easy access to high quality extracts! So that those who would benefit from a quicker way to medicate more, can.

Excellent bro! Rosin is a great option for those that can't seem to find good enough solvent-based extracts! I do find it therapeutic to squash out some bubble hash every now and then myself lol

Also nothing wrong with vaping herb if you enjoy it, and there are certainly some enjoyable flavors to be had there :D

I think we are almost identical in this regard bro, except my latest flower kick was a little while ago now lol Every now and then I'll have something that doesn't melt but my daily driver is definitely earl and I go most days without flowers. :D

Pretty much all flowers for me, mostly because concentrates are real hard to come by where I live. I mean, I vape a little reclaim here and a little kief there, but 99% of the time it's flowers.

I really need to try making some rosin. I've been watching the thread for a while now, so I'm pretty sure I have a decent handle on how it's done, just haven't quite gotten around to it yet. Next time I have a surplus of decent buds, I'll definitely be giving it a shot! :science:

I find vaping flower to be a bit heavier than dabbing oil - I try to have a dab that IMO roughly equates to how much cannabinoids would be in a vape load, so I generally don't find that dabs get me to much of a different level than flowers.
Dabs tend to feel a bit clearer, but have a bit more of a burnout effect when they wear off IME...

I love the speed and convenience of a dab, and when it's done right the flavour is out of this world :D
But there's also something about a nice flowery vape rip.

Oils great but I can get sick of it rather easily I find. I just MUCH prefer the taste of good ol' herbs.

And frankly, I've always been able to get higher on herbs. I can't say why, doesn't make sense to me either. But the #1 thing that does me in are giant rips from my EVO. I'll take a white walled hit, hold it in a good 10-15 seconds, and then let it out. Has always gotten me higher than oil does.

Then again, maybe it's just because my herb setup is much more...developed.

I much prefer Herb over Concentrates, but I live in a non-legal state so I don't have much experience with them. Every time I've dabbed, I've gotten REALLY high, but the experience wasn't very pleasant at all... I can guarantee they weren't high-quality dabs though.

I wish my state would just legalize:(

Right now I am probably 80% c-juice and 20% flowers. With rosin tech gaining a lot of steam I see myself getting away from flowers except for pressing. I am really intrigued by bubblebags and rosin for a wide array of goodies.

I do have this weak thc/high cbd flower that I would love to dab, I just don't have the tolerance to warrant the need for an actual nail with these strong strains.

I tried to go concentrate-only beginning early this year, but have had persistent bronchial congestion that I didn't have when I was combusting flower. My current theory is that I'm getting plant waxes in the respiratory tract and producing excess mucus to flush it out. As of a couple weeks ago I picked up an SSV to vape flowers, and am shooting for something like 60% flower/40% concentrate.

I run into the lung issues with oil too. I feel the residue it leaves, no matter how light I go in temp, is a hassle to deal with.

Some of you may know I'm very active with combat sports (BJJ, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling), etc. I big part of the reason I made the switch to vaping was because it was a lot easier on the lungs.

That's my other reason for sticking with herbs. I find oil is too sticky on the lungs and it makes sparring very difficult.

That's interesting.. I've actually had the opposite experience.. My lungs feel just fine after a big dab, but the equivalent 8 or so hits of flower in a vape is sometimes irritating due to the dryness of the vapor.. I suspect water filtration would help, but I usually vape flowers dry..I guess my theory is less hits=Less throat and lung irritation.

I'm also an athlete that competes at a high level in my age group for the half marathon distance..

Everyone probably has a different opinion on this, but we can all agree that vaporization is way more desirable than combustion:)..

I dabbed exclusively for about a whole year.

There were multiple factors in this decision to stop dabbing, which I don't care to go too deep into as I do not care to :worms::rofl:.

I'll just give my biggest reason... The whole dab ritual started feeling very...., uh.... Un-natural?

I find Vaporization of well grown Cannabis, with a pinch of Sieved Hash(Bubble/ dry Sift) to be much stronger, particularly much more rounded, and lasting for a much longer duration.

-Dabbed oil before bed =Awake with extreme pain at 3-4am to dab myself back to sleep

-Vaporizing Flower and traditional Hash together before bed= a SOLID 7-8 hours of comfortable sleep,

The answer lies in Terpenes...
Terpenes modulate Cannabinoids...

From three years of research, I believe Terpene content is highest in unadulterated Capitate Stalked Glandular Heads (Trichomes)

I truly believe Dry Sift will be the next huge step in the Concentate Community .

I also feel that the Symbolic nature of the Beloved Cannabis Plant is losing said Symbolism.

Additionally I am finding that when I Vape flower alone, the high, and process of vaporization is much more serene than dabbing.

Before concentrates, I would need 2-3 chambers of flower to get medicated. This does not matter if I was using the Lotus, Nano or the large chambered Plenty...

With concentrates, I can go home take a dab off the nail, and have just 1-2 pulls vaping flower for similar effect. The combination also takes a fraction of the time as vaping 3 bowls, and allows me to spend just a few extra minutes each day with my fiancé [instead of sitting solo in the man cave].

Oh man, I feel your pain! I remember when I was in the same position and kief was my only concentrate not too far back. Still in fairness to sift, as my man Hashtag points out, dry sift can easily be the best material in any given stash if given enough work! :)

I suggest making rosin with kief. Flowers and rosin can take FUCKING FOREVER!!!!!! lol however good results can certainly be had for the patient!

I usually make concentrates after my harvest times. And use it only on the weekends. Last me nearly the whole year. I like having both so it keeps it mixed up

I find similar effects to this, dabbing is clearer of an effect and flowers have more sedative effect. I enjoy the odd flower bowl here or there usually with friends when I don't have anything else to do that day. Otherwise, it's concentrates.

However, the sedative effect of vaping flowers does not keep me asleep (persistent insomnia is a major reason that I medicate!) for the 5-6 hours that I need of a night. I find it gets me 2-3 hours. Concentrates (generally in the past bubble hash, but now rosin pressed from said bubble hash) do the job for me much better in this regard. I just make sure to use more decarbed material (like my year+ old magnificent smelling/tasting THC Bomb bubble hash) for night dabs as the high THCA shatters I make are not so conducive to sleep lol

I could venture a few guesses as to why you get sick of oils easily and don't get you as high. Potentially, you may have had oils with less terp content (over-purged somewhat perhaps). Also as you say, you have more vapes at your disposal for herb than oil and some nice ones at that, if you did not have similarly nice dab setups then it would make sense that you would prefer flowers. You may even have only devices present to get great effects from herb, but not necessarily the best effects from oils.

There are many times when I wish I could just have all of you guys round for a vape-in to show you a few things I've noticed along the way in my vaping experiences (and no doubt be taught some of the same! :D ), this is one. I'd love to give each of you guys a dab on silicon carbide, sapphire and then ti to show you how far flavor has come in dabbing! One day :D

I much prefer Herb over Concentrates, but I live in a non-legal state so I don't have much experience with them. Every time I've dabbed, I've gotten REALLY high, but the experience wasn't very pleasant at all... I can guarantee they weren't high-quality dabs though.

Man I wish mine would legalize too! Here's to both of our home states legalizing! :D

It sounds potentially like you could have dabbed poor concentrates. I find that especially concentrates with residual butane get me majorly high, but also majorly anxious and jittery. Not at all pleasant and put me off concentrates early on, til I realized what was going wrong.

Definitely, although I've been a hydrocarbon extraction guy, I have nothing but respect for solventless techs, whether rosin or dry sift/bubble. I use bubble quite a bit myself (generally to make rosin or sometimes I'll use solvent to make absolute shatter). I encourage everyone to explore dry sift/bubble and see what it has to offer. I find these can be exceptional for insomnia! I am yet to have a full melt sift/bubble yet, but I've had loads of 3/4 melt bubble and can already tell that full melt would be outstanding! Sadly, I am quite hesitant to order such products online from overseas (no local options!) since the best ones are clearly made for cannabis extraction and anyone at customs could readily realize this...

I tried to go concentrate-only beginning early this year, but have had persistent bronchial congestion that I didn't have when I was combusting flower. Could definitely be waxes man, I found waxes to be brutal from non dewaxed concentrates. I only dab dewaxed stuff (except for my rosin) for this reason. I find that so long as you have properly purged and dewaxed, concentrates are far, far easier on the airways than bud or hash.

I do also find that super low-temp dabbing is a big culprit in terms of dabbing related congestion. Get ceramic or SiC if you wanna get low temp taste with enough vaporization. Preferably SiC but ceramic will help over quartz due to better heat distribution.

PART TWO CONTINUES IN NEXT POST!

PART TWO (exceeded character limit of a single post lol)

I run into the lung issues with oil too. I feel the residue it leaves, no matter how light I go in temp, is a hassle to deal with.

Low temp is actually potentially the reason for your lung effects my friend. I find that lower temps (especially getting down to 590f or less) will actually increase congestion due to rapid recondensing of the aerosol in your airways. Similarly, wax content could have been an issue too. I could imagine nothing worse than doing the physically demanding things you describe with airways lined in wax lol

I only vape flowers because that's what's available. I like the taste and the whole ritual of preparation. I would try concentrate if I could get some but I really don't think I'm missing anything special.

You are missing many special things, there is more diversity in the concentrate world I find than even in flowers! So many possibilities once not only different genetics/grow conditions but also extraction techniques/conditions as well come into the mix! Still, I know what it's like, I came to FC having never used any concentrates and not having even seen or heard of many of them. I had never heard the word shatter til I came here!

That's interesting.. I've actually had the opposite experience.. My lungs feel just fine after a big dab, but the equivalent 8 or so hits of flower in a vape is sometimes irritating due to the dryness of the vapor.. [

I think this is going to come down to a difference in the material being dabbed/equipment being used for the dabbing. I have similar experiences to you, bud especially is far harsher on my airways/throat than my shatters. However, I sub-micron filter (.2 micron) and take out the fats and waxes in all my shatters. I decided long ago that if I'm gonna be dabbing every day, I'd better take that stuff out because my airways would thank me lol

No doubt we all agree that vaping > combustion here though :D

I hear ya bro, you discovered dabbing first and vaping second, so the novelty would have worked in reverse for the two of us. We probably shouldn't discount this factor.

Still I gotta say, I find flower ineffective for sleep purposes personally (effects don't last long enough) and don't like to mix concentrates with flower in convection vapes because the flower spends way before the concentrate and makes the vapor very harsh (for me of course, this is subjective for sure and some will cope better than others).

Oil (the right oils, decarbed ones) give me the uninterrupted sleep that I used to get as a small child before my insomnia started (have had this problem a very long time). Bubble hash and even crude dry sifts also give me this effect though.

As such, I have no doubt and agree flower + dry sift bowls would still work wonders for sleep if you can handle the harshness toward the end of the bowl when the flower is spent. :)

Finally, we as cannabis enthusiasts would do well to beware of the naturalistic fallacy. I teach my students this all the time as a scientist as well. Not everything that is natural is best.

Just because it is, does not mean it ought to be. Sometimes we do need to do some work to take only what we need from nature, rather than the rest of the material comprising a given beneficial plant source for example. Remember, nature works spontaneously and is by no means perfect.

In my view, the challenge is to beware of the potential pitfalls (as you know, there are many in hydrocarbon extraction particularly!) we can bring in to the mix by attempting to manipulate nature to produce something that better suits our needs.

Then we can take the best of what nature has to offer us (in this instance, wonderful cannabinoids and terpenes/terpenoids) without any of the wax/fat/particulates/chlorophyll/etc. Of course, this discipline is in its infancy and I am sure that we will see extracts in the future which overcome these problems in ways that we cannot even yet imagine :D

Still I wanna say loud and clear that dry sift and bubble hash (especially fully melting stuff like the wonderful material you make!) should be rightfully regarded as some of the best possible cannabis medicine/recreation available.

Also I would never suggest that none should use flowers of course, they are something that should never be lost from our cultures - I just find that for my medical needs, concentrates and dabbing suit best :D

Before concentrates, I would need 2-3 chambers of flower to get medicated. This does not matter if I was using the Lotus, Nano or the large chambered Plenty...

Definitely feel this one, back when I had a partner, concentrates gave me time to spend with the person I cared about, rather than stuck to my bubbler all day! Nowadays I have more time for my research, teaching, conferences etc.

I think my dab equipment itself is good enough. I own a Cloud EVO and a HE domeless. It's more the glass I have for it. The glass I own has all been bought for herbs mostly. I have a small, functional, chinese recycler which is nice and I quite enjoy it with the domeless. Just after a few dabs, I always find myself wanting to go to herbs.

Low temp is actually potentially the reason for your lung effects my friend. You could be right there. I actually found dabs less enjoyable through the EVO on low temps than with my mini rig recycler and an HE domeless.

My problem my really simply be that I haven't set myself up in the way I have for herbs. My oil pieces aren't anywhere close to as nice and while the EVO does oil well, it's just not a style I prefer. I think I'm more of a nail guy at the end of the day.

When I have some more money to dedicate to it (and I don't have to worry about drug testing and can smoke again), I'll start my experimentation up.

It does irk me a little that I can't do the testing in BC. Vancouver had beautiful oils and they were easy to access. I haven't found that nearly the same in Seattle currently.
