My new clamp hybrid works so well. It applies so much pressure the parchment can rip. Bubble man needs to turn down his temp. See how dark his product is and then all the little popped bubbles are from too much heat. Also you can see frayed strands of nylon from sloppy cut iof the 25u screen. The frays can get in the rosin.

.2 g flower in hair iron and this was the yield. A nice sized dab off and I get to cape the rosin chip.

Above are two presses, two piles. Top pile is live rosin. Bottom is one flower rosin. Literally took me 2x as long to take and upload the photos vs make the rosin. Between premade parchment, premade 25u screens, and 30 second warm up rosin will be fast, effecient, and safe.

Also don't feel the need to spend top dollar on some rebranded machine. A 1 ton arbor press is really being overlooked in my opinion. I'm going to make an arbor press with heated plates similar to the clamp design.

So, what is the concensus on :

Size of nug to be pressed (hair iron)

If one could get a bigger hair iron with a bigger surface area would one be able to increase the nug size (Hehe what size are your nugs? Strange question indeed)


Temp to be used (got one of these clamps mentioned earlier as used by a dispensary and this has made a world of difference! I am sure I can lower my tempos now, using 130c,which is lowest my hair iron goes) at what pressure?

Moisture content of nugs? Tried some fresh frozen pop corn yesterday and this did not work well, clear drops of water formed along with the rosin.

Rehydration? How and how much?

I do not think a concensus has been reached yet on these variables?

But would be nice to try and organize these basic principles for people that are just joining this party...

Mine is usually dark, but if I stick it on a dabber and hold it to the light it's a dark golden see trough.

Yeah man, if it is older hash actives will have degraded, just make sure it is clear and golden/amber/etc.

I just did some SiC/Sapphire convection dabs of the rosin I made at 850f, sounds super hot but for convection dabs it is perfect. Such flavor!

Yeah, it's high grade import, so probably old. Amber, that's the right word for it. Thank you!

Now I must find the Norwegian word for it haha

Edit: LOL My GF has been calling it amber in Norwegian all along. Like, she calls the rosin in it self amber, as in a dab of amber

I pre-compress my nugs into 1/2" balls before pressing with the Iron. I think there is a point where the bigger hair irons with larger surface area is going to need more pressure per square inch and I feel we are pushing the limits on what a stock hairpress can hold up to in a press already. I love my 1.5" hair press!

130c is pretty warm? I found one that has digital temp control and the lowest temp setting is 122f (50c)

I press @ 230-250f depending on rosin production of my nugs. I will always try the lowest temp that works best.

Great Scott!
Just squooshed some super dark but clear rosin out of some quite aged cured bubble hash (still very blonde after a year or more) and dabbed it on the silicon carbide. Whoa! Love the hashy effects!


What is this silicon carbide dabbing device you have? Consider me interested. What are the advantages over quartz or ceramic?

Here is some of the same strain I just pressed at 270f to test. Much darker than the lower temp pic.

Sometimes I think I have broken my hairpress or the temps are off because some nugs won't yield well, Then I grab a top kola nug and press it and bamm. gooeyness is back... Crap in, crap out I guess!

Major advantage over quartz is taste and durability, much more even heat distribution, thermal shock resistance, eliminates vapor trails after your dab etc, same with ceramic.

The hits are so thick and satisfying when dabbing on this stuff!

SiC (Silicon Carbide) is an aerospace/ballistics ceramic with extremely high thermal shock tolerance (you can torch the christ out of it!), can handle temps of 3000f and vaporizes your dab into a much finer aerosol than any other nail material I've ever used. Think of it like the sublimator for dabbing but with taste so good that it surpasses the thick satisfying clouds that it delivers!

The other benefit is that the SiC dish is designed to have a sapphire insert sit on top of a relatively non-conductive ti shelf above the SiC and when the carb cap is placed above this with material on the sapphire (a solid 100 degrees centigrade higher in temp on the d-nail dial than if you dabbing straight onto the SiC! That air needs heat!), allows for convection dabs.

This is no gimmick! It really works and the flavor on my THC Bomb Rosin is so much better tasting done convection style on sapphire than even on Silicon carbide! It tastes better than the original bubble hash that I squooshed does when vaped in the Mighty!

Seriously, you should all be abandoning your quartz, ti and ceramic nails. I have used all of the above, none compare. Not even close! This is the next generation of nails! It is like the taste was hidden behind a curtain before, and with SiC, that curtain has been torn asunder and all of the flavor bursts through!

Tell me about it brother, super excited to get my hands on one of these presses! I'm getting epic quality shatter out of my year old 70% melt bubble with the new hair straightener I got last night. Can't wait to get the same results quicker with a legit press! :D

That is one of the sickest pieces I've ever seen, absolutely gorgeous!

I picked up a hair iron the other day. Not sure what the lowest temp is yet, but it advertised 30 heat settings, so hope some low temps are offered.

Getting some parchment tomorrow then hoping to give it a shot soon. No filter paper yet, want to give it try without first.

It sounds like the sapphire insert isn't flush against the nail bottom, allowing it to remain cooler than the actual nail. Then when you add the carb cap, it contacts the nail, heating up, which in turn heats up the air coming through carb and vaporizes your concentrate. this pic from the d-nail site helps clarify:

Personally, it seems a bit gimmicky but after reading @herbivore21's praises for it, I'm interested in trying one to see how it compares to standard Ti or quartz

As the pic my man Boulderado posted shows, the sapphire sits above the dish and is not directly heated by the heated, instead, hot air is drawn in through the carb cap (you must set heat to 850f or so for this), creating just the right pressure and convective heat to evaporate everything in a delicious way! The only part that is difficult is sticking solid shatter in place on the insert without it falling off when you try to put it on the nail lol. This one works with wax/sappier material better. The female fitting is simply an infiniti base :)

Thanks bro, it really has been amazing hitting my new dab rig! Seriously love the size, it has just enough can to allow for monster rips without creating too much surface area of glass for vapor to recondense on. Very simple percolation for taste preservation!

I am using teflon rather than parchment. It works wonders for getting the dab off afterwards!

Yes, you've got how it works there man. I too thought it was a gimmick but since using it, have totally eaten my words!

It is an amazing way to dab! Sapphire is tastier than anything else I have dabbed off (except SiC, they seem to be equally tasty but I do find that sapphire may be better for some terp profiles and SiC for others!). Especially with rosin, the flavor is another level again! I am loving the sapphire convection dabs! Get a good flat pair of tweezers to manipulate the sapphire insert whilst hot though! I got a 24k gold plated pair :D

@herbivore21 how stupid would I be to heat up a cast iron skillet on low and get it to about 300F then try and press a nug (in parchment of course) with a weight for a few seconds?

I feel so left out having never made rosin. I can't wait for the snail press any longer. I CANT TAKE IT!!!!!!!! I have to make some rosin now :rant:

I got some shit bud hiding somewhere I think so I will try this method out haha. I'll be back soon to post :)

Not stupid at all bro, I have had success with a slightly more engineered version of basically this method. It is all about enough squash and enough heat and you've got delicious rosin :D It'll take some practice to dial it in but no reason why you couldn't do well here!

Perfect. I was thrown off by when the carb cap is added. I'm assuming the sapphire insert does not work without a carb cap then, correct?

30 second heat up and digital timeout are key. When do you think it will be complete and ready to show off?

Only $60 to turn flowers into concentrates? If the function is on point this will be an A1 device

I'm trying it out right now.

First attempt was a fail, ended with a super flat bud and no resin. The bottom pan was at about 320F but the top pan was only at 260F.

Going to let the pans sit and heat some more to try to get both around 300F.

I also had to remove the pans from the stovetop and put them on the counter to press because I didnt want to break my burner by pushing too hard lol. So they may have lost some heat during that process.

Attempt 2 fail lol. I don't think it's getting hot enough...the nug is still pretty green. Just flat and crispy haha.

I think I'm losing too much heat. I tested the pan after I tried the second press and it was already down to 220F after 10 seconds.

Maybe I'll get it to 400F, move it to the counter, let it cool a little then press

I'd use the smallest pan you have, ideally with a shim under it, so you can reduce the pressing area as much as possible.

Let's say you weigh 150 lbs and stand on a 9" pan. With its 63 sq in area, you'll only be putting down a little over 2 PSI. I don't think that's enough for successful rosining.

I'm really curious to find out what the necessary minimum pressure is-- my experiments have me inclined to believe it's above 25 PSI.

Gonna browse around my kitchen to see if I can figure out an easy way to macgyver a rosin press.
