Discontinued The Grasshopper

So I tried the MiVape "wax cloth" in the GH with a little oil and it works great, even on level 4, so I imagine level 5 would be even better! The wax cloth appears to be a regular "cheese cloth" cut into 1 inch squares so if you have any of that around, give it a try. SO easy and effective but I hope we can improve on this temporary concentrate adapter while we wait for the real deal to roll out. I will continue my tests and post the results

Nice man! keep us posted on your experiments! How much wax would you say you used? How was the flavor?

We used those same little clothes to clean the barrels of our rifles in the army, "bore patches" if yall ever want to buy them.

I actually cancelled my preorder just a couple days ago, because I decided that the Zion was a device that fits what I'm looking for a bit more, and I received a refund from Hopper Labs within a day of sending Trevor the email. I wouldn't worry about losing your money if you decide you don't want to deal with the uncertainty/wait anymore. The only thing I could imagine causing problems in that respect is if there's some sort of catastrophe with the Hoppers that causes everyone to ask for refunds at once, in which case they probably wouldn't have enough money to refund everyone. I don't expect that anyone is going to get ripped off.
I am also on the FC100 Zion pre-order list and feel so much more confident in Rasta Buddah Tao's business model and progress. So far, RBT is consulting with the FC community on beta development with progress and anticipated deliveries ahead of schedule with even more expected features than originally promised. I'm still keeping my GH on pre-order for the time being, at least pending their next update as I think I would enjoy them both. Regarding GH refunds from HL, they really have to refund pre-orders or risk even greater customer wrath but if a trickle becomes a flood this will become financially untenable -- so yes there is a valid concern though each customer will have to assess for him/herself how great that is. For the moment, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for everyone's success.

Yeah while RBT's business model and communication is infinitely better I'm getting the grasshopper because it can go literally just about anywhere with you. The Zion is a badass looking device but it's fairly bulky with glass parts to break...much less portable and stealthy. I imagine one of the main selling points of the grasshopper is its stealthiness.

That's the beauty, a little goes a long way......I just used a dot of co2 oil, the size of half a grain of rice and it was enough to get some hits, I didn't keep track because this was just a quick experiment I did before bed last night but I would guess I could get at least 5 clouds off of this amount but most likely more or less depending on the temp. and draw duration. I will try to have more detailed information as I continue testing but it's clear that the GH can do concentrates. My GH hasn't been cleaned since I got the unit, back in early July but even with a semi dirty GH, the vapor tasted great! It was more flavorful and tastier than my o.pen/bud touch pen that I generally use this kind of oil with. The GH is full of great surprises and its a vape I use everyday despite having many other great vapes to chose from.

Do I regret buying the FF?. If the price of a FF is problem for you, that it can sometimes combust even if it's "working properly" .

Just to clear this one point up: the FF does not combust when working properly. You can make it do so given certain conditions (like adding screens) but when functioning properly it won't combust. It does indeed require finesse and technique, but not to avoid combustion. It just won't do it, unless it's faulty. (Which is why they'll repair or replace one that is combusting.)

Sorry for the OT...;)

Well played, but there are so many more SS models than Ti ordered that I had the opposite thought process. Once the IGG backers are taken care of ( TI ) then all other Ti models and color can ship for pre-orders. So in theory if both ship at the same rate ( GL has said this but who really fucking knows if they are serious ) then woot!

Yeah, if I weren't a poor college student I definitely think I would have kept the GH preorder around as well. I still think this looks like a great vape, and hopefully Hopper Labs can get out working units to the masses sometime in the next few months. That said, it's nice to be free of the perpetual uncertainty behind the GH's shipping. I expect I'll get back in on this baby in a year or so. Hopefully I won't still be behind a long line of preorders by then

I was joking there but I am generally concerned with the stainless steel threads now considering the high amps passing through them and how easy stainless likes galling to itself without lube. (See shipping thread)

We use all stainless nuts and bolts in my shop, an without using lanocote*, we would never be able to take stuff apart once tight.

I am not trying to freak anyone out but just voice my concerns I guess.

I have never worked with Ti threads and I am curious if Ti likes to gall like SS does?

Edit: is there a vape safe thread lube/wax that's conductive to current?

I know titanium screws used on aircraft heat up quick if there is any kind of drag and will seize (which is why one shouldn't use the high speed on a drill, but I digress). This can be avoided by slowly screwing the bowl back on. Haha.

I don't believe I know of this thing...can you point me in the direction of the thread..? It sounds interesting and might be worth a gander......

@Old School Check the candidate section for portables. Downside vs GH: no way to charge it w/o taking the batteries out and putting them in a separate charger. No temperature control, you have to push a button in a pattern to heat up and maintain temps. No stealth, unless you tell people you are carrying your kid's woodblock. The advantage over GH: it prob has a bigger heater. longer battery life. glass air path (other than the heater).

I think they are very different animals.

Did you have to change draw technique at all? I couldn't find any cheese cloth out and about just now but you did inspire me to see if my FF concentrate pads fit the GH (they don't you could probably cut them to size but then getting it out ...) anyway, I then decided to us the FF pads in the actual FF because I have this Tres Seis Agent Orange errl.

Well after I finally remembered how to use the FF, particularly for concentrates but in general, what I remembered is that with the FF's fixed temperature, not only does draw speed decrease temperature but in the FF they are specifically using that as a design feature so for concentrates that requires a high temp ergo very slow draw.

So just wondering if like the FF did the GH require a different draw technique to work with concentrates

No, not really like SS.....much worse. The key is to not over stress the threads with sheer forces (sliding past each other). They don't need to be torqued down all that tight, and in fact from a conduction POV gronking down (sorry for the technical term....) is not advised since it tends to reduce the total percentage of thread in solid contact if the threads are otherwise 'done right'. For instance, with Thermovape Cera (much more 'generous' design for the same general current levels), thread problems happen with Ti but not SS end caps.

I'm not so sure about conductive lubes, the only ones I know that work have metal (Copper or more usually Silver) fillers. The special 'conductive lubes' sold to the killer flashlight guys (I have two such) are not really conductive themselves (stick your meter leads in the jar and see.....), but rather control the air/oxides it seems.

If I had a Ti version I'd run it down snug and keep track of it in case of heating (sign of bad contact)? I wonder if wear down the road will become an issue? Those threads much be mighty fine?

Zion does have a voltage knob, and it works remarkably well for temp stepping by the way, while not exactly temp controlled precisely, I find it extremely effective and intuitive personally.

Hoppers precise temp control in on demand convection is very valuable though, and fairly unprecedented I believe for a portable, nonetheless one so small and stealthy...

@RastaBuddhaTao is also working on a bare bones single battery portable too @Old School, like a convection mflb (I describe Zion as an MFLSV, simple wooden portable with on demand LSV desktop power + 18mm glass)

Doesn't have the fancy new age tech and bells and whistles of GH in that package, but Zion is super effective and super simple, minimal design and materials, all pure and natural

It will be very interesting for me to compare when my Hopper comes, since I've always belived in it and based on what weve heard, but the Zion is just so intense in the best way, insanely powerful and versatile imo. Just check out my beta test posts in the thread

EDIT: another thought re batteries Zi vs GH:

GH you get usb, use while charging though not pass through so you have to wait for some charge and may not be great for battery longevity, but they will eventually have an external charger for sale they asure. However their batteries are proprietary and their size, and battery life is limited (though I do think 3-4 bowls sounds like plenty), reasonably quick charge time at just over an hour too though, like FF kinda quick to charge and discharge.

With Zion you get standard 18650s, any mah and these are plentiful for some, a standard size available in stores. Though it takes two (single battery mini version takes one though), the battery life is super long, like 5-8+ bowls probably depending on load size and voltages used. Yes you must charge separately in any charger (nitecores i2-4 and even better d2-4 work great, we don't know about GH and them), but charging separately does allow you to not be dependent on the devise sitting there to charge like I would need to do with my Firefly proprietary batteries (since i never got their own proprietary external charger).

RBT also plans to offer AC pass through packs so you can also plug Zion and its bretheren in to run true pass through off the wall power... I hope/presume Grasshopper is planning some thing similar way down the line too actually

Any advice for an interested customer who was not an early backer? Wait til it hits retail and see some more reviews? Or purchase at reduced price?

I'd say pre order and get the discount, you'll still be waiting til they're nearly at full scale production is imagine, and you'd save who knows how much yet... I was one of first pre orders back in January, jumped on it as soon as I could bc I missed the campaign.
