MJ and insomnia

If I was reading the title for the first time, I would assume the post would be about weed used to cure insomnia. That seems to be what most people experience. Or so I would guess from my time here and what I've witnessed myself.

Is there anyone else out there that has trouble sleeping when vaked? It doesn't seem to matter the strain or temp except to vary the level of insomnia. I don't really mind, I just plan for it. I post more out of curiosity and hopefully to start what might be an interesting discussion.

slick,

i get vaked and hit vongs is it so wrong?
Maybe try vaping higher temps. I notice if I forget to vape my last bowl at a high temp I won't fall asleep as quick but. My mates just say too stoned to sleep lol. But yes I have heard a handful of times people having some trouble sleeping when smashed

Absolutely, several months back I found myself tossing and turning trying to fall asleep. I realized it was because I had started vaping right before bed. Turns out that was a big mistake for my body/mind - kept me up for a while (not all night, but damn it took forever to fall asleep).

Since then, I've stopped vaporizing at least one hour before bed, and I have no trouble falling asleep.

Then again, I do have a pretty healthy sleep routine - been going to bed around 11pm and waking up at 7am for about 12 years now. I always wake up before my alarm clock, even on the weekends. "Sleeping in" means waking up at 8:30 these days

Yes. I have trouble sleeping when vaped. But that's because I either did get myself in that zoned out stage or because I did vaped at a low temperature. I have to hit the sweet spot, if not, I'm not falling asleep.

So I have narcolepsy which is often thought to be the opposite of Insomnia. Unfortunately, my narcolepsy has created issues with insomnia. During the daytime I am a complete narco like Mr. Bean. I won't fall asleep standing, but I can fall asleep working, driving, talking and I even have what I am thinking may be cataplexy attacks because I cannot pull myself out of it sometimes.

I have found that certain flowers will actually make me feel more energized and alert and if I can get away for a quick break and happen to have the right flowers I can pull myself right out of it and be back to 100% instantly. Other flowers will just keep me in the same rut or have no effect.

I have also found that if I get really-really baked before I sleep I don't have the insomnia issue so bad. MY insomnia is more of an anxiety really. I am always afraid that if I don't get enough "good" sleep I will not be productive at work the next day or even worse, I am worried I will fall asleep driving. Falling asleep usually isn't too hard even if I'm not completely baked I will fall asleep within 30 minutes usually. The problem comes about an hour or so in to my sleep. I wake in the night often, about 4-5 times a night. I always have to get up and pee like a race horse each time so I can't just roll over and go right back to sleep. If I hear cars driving on the main road, see daylight starting to form outside my window or even feel that it is close to 4am or later I cannot go back to sleep. I don't have illuminated clocks in my house because it is best for me not to have any clue what time it is when I am sleeping. If a money or work issue exists in my life during that night of sleep, this is all I will think about when I wake up and I will not stop.

I have discovered certain strains seem to help the narco issues and certain strains seem to help the insomniac/anxiety issues. Because I'm not in a medicinal or rec state I am not able to be certain what strains I am getting. I was mostly using GSC, Blue Dream and KO Kush from March thru May and I found that they all really seemed to help with the insomnia/anxiety. Wish I could get some "Shiva X" to try for my narcolepsy.

I actually vape to help with my insomnia. Its about the only thing Ive found that works. Every nite I vape a full Haze bowl through to the highest temp. I sleep much better since I started doing that. I also vape for pain so I tend to utilize indica dominate hybrids or straight indica and that seems to do the job. Heres an article that discusses the effects of marijuana on insomnia: http://www.zamnesia.com/blog-cannabis-and-sleep-top-5-strains-for-insomnia-n267

I've found the exact same thing. Last call is at least 60-90 minutes before sleepy time. That's when the TV and computer get shut down too. It's too stimulating.

I read an article about how having one foot uncovered, like sticking out from the sheets, can help. No idea why, but it seems to actually help.

Best of lock, this is beatable!

i have the same problem too, vaping or dabbing, same thing.
I'm having pretty bad insomnia issues and when still smoking joints i used to smoke one right before going to bed and brush my teeth etc, and it would knock me right into sleep most of the time.

When starting vaping/dabbing i found out that taking a hit straight before bed completely wakes me up and i really had to find my way there.
For me it feels like there is sort of a curve in the high; when just coming up, it's really waking me up and then it slips into a more mellow, heavy buzz and that's where i will go to bed, usually after half an hour, 45 minutes or so. Longer makes me feel like the effects are wearing off too much.
So, yeah, like Ratchett and Syrupy i started planning my sessions too.

But, since i'm vaping i only had access to hybrid strains like lemon haze, super silver, and i would like to try out a full indica to see what that does with sleeping.

Funny how we'll all different. I've taken to the nugget technique with my Air. I get about 10 minutes on a small nugget, and dump it whole into an "Limbo ABV Jar". I can take the same nugget, and vape it a bit higher temp, later in the day, and get the sleepy effects I want.

I also like to have a loaded Air in my special case on my night table. I rarely use it, but know if I can't sleep, I can take a few "sips", and

Team NO SLEEP!
I have no trouble sleeping while vaked, however ever since I entered my 30s I find I cannot fall asleep if I have more than 2-3 drinks. Its like I can't settle down till the alcohol buzz has passed.

@Bravesst called it...

We all have unique Cannabinoid receptors, much like our fingerprints , in turn we all uptake these Cannabinoids in differing manners.

My main use of Cannabis is for insomnia related to Chronic Pain, Anxiety and Fatigue.

I typically fire up the DBV 30 -45 minutes before bedtime.

I'm still underestimating the power of Vapor, and pass out with the whip in my hand:zzz:...

The last 3 nights though, I think I've dialed things in....

No more than 0.1 and just enough Hash to make a very thin layer that covers the diameter of the load.

Count out 7 draws, put the whip down, turn off DBV, and directly to bed.

If you happen to grow your own medicine, or have a dedicated Caregiver...
Let the plant grow for 2-3 weeks extra, letting the Trichomes turn Amber in color, at this point, a lot of the THC has morphed into CBN, which has the exact opposite of THC's effects.

Extremely sedative, and relaxing ..

Although, THC effects myself differently ... It always relaxes everything for me, and all I can do is close my eyes with a huge grin on my face, and drift off into a peaceful slumber.

This "morphing " can also be achieved by curing your cannabis for an extended time frame.

I see we are both afflicted with the same disease...
AS is not a lot of fun most of the time.
Tonight especially! I work at least 10 hours a day, no medication, so when i come home i need to vape directly to numb my back. Tonight my step daughter came home... No vaping till 8PM, 3 hours late!
It was on fire...

Luckily some Vanilla Kush eased it back to a numb ache!

And to answer the question:
Yes i do suffer from insomnia and MMJ is the cause, i think.
I always slept like the dead, head hits pillow and eyes snap open 5 minutes before alarm goes off.
Jump out of bed and good to go!
The last month has been so different though!
Same vape routine, just a lot fewer strains.
Always hit my MiniVap before bed while lying in bed, usually it is lights out!
That is until 2:30AM when i am wide awake!
Then it is that nasty routine of falling asleep and waking up every 30 minutes until you have to get up...
Then the days drag...

My theory is that i need to keep mixing things up!
Different strains all the time to keep the receptors guessing!
Tonight it was some Vanilla Kush the mailman just delivered, super fresh and tasty!
And great for pain, as my whole body is numb, it is awesome!
Thank you my Plenty for always kicking my ass!

Oh and i wish i could find late harvest Indica or Indica Dom strains!!
To me they are all harvested too early...

Sometimes I will take an edible 3 hours before bed. You need to get the doesage down. Whether it be cannabutter on toast or plain coconut oil on a spoon or in some hot tea. Make sure you have a sleepy type of cannabis edible. You can get creative and make a special cookie just for you. A sleepytime cookie ask @killick or @Enchantre

Heya brother!!

Yeah, man.. I tagged you in another thread regarding our common affliction.

I truly applaud you for working 10 hours.... I know exactly how it feels after a 10 hour shift..

I literally dragged myself to my car, spent at least 5-10 minutes trying to get in my car, cringing in pain.
When I was still Bustin', I would have to make sure I had a HUGE joint ready for the ride home , or I wouldn't be able to get out of the car.

My medical team begged and begged for me to apply for disability, but I kept refusing due to my pride.

Finally, in early 2014 the necessity to replace both my right and left hips became imminent, I could no longer walk without a walker.

The problem was the fact I suffered the widespread pain for 2 decades without any treatment because no doctor cared enough to do some digging to diagnose the issue.

Sorry to derail the thread guys....
Perhaps, we'll take this to PM.

Hard to find other AS patients that I can actually relate to.

Really a pleasure to meet you Bro... Hope to discuss some commonalities with you sometime.:peace:

But I like it!
@lazylathe I just the other day made a batch of Oatmeal Peanut Butter. 24 cookies have a 10 day supply of tincture in them, and I kinda space them throughout the day. 24 lasts 4 or 5 days, plus I'm vaping through the day. And adding tinc to juice and coffee, cause I think we should get our meds through more than one method at any given time.

I've been kinda following this routine for the past few weeks, and fwiw I'm pretty much gone when I hit the pillow. A nice change from the bunch of years prior to that...

I actually find that i cannot fall asleep without a vape before bed. I combusted all my life until i discovered vaping. When i 1st started it was really for fun with friends and than it became my medicine. I have for years now not really vaped much during the day but use it more to relax at night time and get my self to sleep.
