***UPDATE***

Sent a email with pics. Got a reply within an hour saying they are shipping me a new grinder no questions asked, don't even have to send in the defective one.

I also mentioned that I have heard of others with similar issues latley so to check stock for more defects

EDIT: I wrote this post before reading the previous post.

The thing is, I don't even want to say anything to the people at Santa Cruz Shredder because I've read enough to know that they only respond kindly (or productively) to people who praise everything about their products. Which is one of the most perfect ways to ruin a business. I have praised their products a ton myself, and my fourth SCS is in the mail, but I have also been pretty critical of parts/aspects of my grinders that deserve criticism. Which is exactly how I would want customers to review my product if I was the head of any kind of business, because it's in my best interest to know exactly how I may be failing the people who keep my business alive.

EDIT: I decided to send them a message, too. It was only a few minutes ago (3:30ish EDT), so naturally I haven't heard anything back yet. Even though I've been pretty rough on Santa Cruz Shredder at times, I think I am rooting for them.

No response from Santa Cruz Shredder yet. Apparently they don't want me to buy anything else from them, ever.

Also what I have noticed that is different on the new shredders is that the pollen dish is a lot beefier and deeper, I like it a lot.

Going get some of that grinder grease to see if it fixes the problem at all so I can give it to my sister. But the friction ring still leaves a dried powdery substance when turning even after a thorough cleaning.

I tried to get my replacement grinder in gun metal but it had already been sent out. They did say I can refuse the package to get it sent back and will send me the gun metal color. Have faith @Aimless Ryan im sure they will get back to you soon. I sent a proper email with all my order info and detailed pics. I also posted on Instagram and tagged them.

Why does everyone have so many grinders? Theyre not cheap.... You can buy weed and vapes with that money lol!

Seriously though, why have more than one decent grinder in use?
I've only ran one grinder at a time. The SCS took over the diamond grind's spot. Diamond grind now sits in a box. I believe people just try new ones out of curiosity/searching for the next best things.

I really like that SCS elevates the magnet on the perforated side of the grinding chamber to keep herb from getting stuck in the center between the magnets, but I feel like that convenience is negated by the fact that the edges of the top fit down inside of the lower part, instead of outside as is generally the case. Doesn't this result in lots of 'grinder hash' smashed into the corners of the grinder? I'd think that cleaning would have to be done much more regularly with this configuration to avoid squeaking and stickiness. Can anyone weigh in on this? For the past 6 or so years a window topped sharpstone has been my go-to grinder, I don't see that changing anytime soon judging from most competitor's prices.

Does anyone have recommendations for other grinders which employ an elevated magnet in the bottom part of the grind chamber? Don't think I'm willing to drop $70 to test one out, especially considering the perceived design flaw with the top sitting down inside the bottom half.

Also any recommendations for cheap titanium grinders would be much appreciated.

1. I recently became fascinated/obsessed with grinders, and I also have a very analytical personality. I analyze. It's what I do.

2. Having lost a lot of function, strength, and coordination in my hands, certain sized grinders and my hands don't get along very well, and I wanted to figure out which sizes are best for me. For example, the large SCS 4-piece probably feels much bigger to me than it does to most people, which makes its 2.75" diameter just a little awkward for me. Since that grinder was my first high-end grinder, after using two really cheap generic grinders for the previous year and a half, there's no way I could've known grinder size may be so important to me until after I tried a few different sizes. Consequently, I've been trying a lot of different sizes, with different teeth shape/arrangement and various number of pieces (2-piece, 4-piece, 5-piece, etc).

3. Just about any grinder will do the job, but certain grinders make the job much more enjoyable. I've been trying to find out which grinders are most enjoyable to me.

4. I lay around on the couch most of the time because my entire body pretty much quit on me. I don't go anywhere. I don't socialize. I don't move much. I don't have much of anything to occupy my time, which gets really fucking boring after a few years. Playing with grinders and reading hundreds of pages about grinders kind of gives me something to do (even if there's nothing in the grinder).

5. I guess I have some kind of drive to always be learning about something.

6. I think I mentioned this in an earlier post, but sitting on my couch and playing with the grinder is kind of like physical therapy for my hands. I'm willing to bet there's a very well-known physical therapy exercise that's very similar to turning a weed grinder over and over. I gotta believe playing with grinders can really work your wrists and finger muscles [if you got none].

7. I hadn't bought anything nice for myself for a long time (except weed) until a month ago, so I decided to treat myself to six high-end/upper mid-range grinders (so far), a couple cheap grinders, and a good vaporizer. I'm willing to bet there's at least one more grinder buy in me, plus freebies like the one I'm getting with my vaporizer. I have still never vaped, nor have I ever seen a vaporizer in person. (My AroMed left LA yesterday, bound for Ohio.)

8. I don't have the option to try out my friends' grinders because I pretty much have no friends or social life. (When you get permanently sick/disabled and kinda need someone to shine as a friend, pretty much all "friends" disappear.)

9. Until you've used a really good grinder, you just don't know. It sounds like you don't know yet, which I can't help you with. The only way to know is by going out to the internet and grabbing yourself a really nice, expensive grinder.

10. God damn they're so pretty.

11. I'm kind of tiring of 4-piece grinders not really giving me the fine grind consistency I like, and I'm tired of gunking up grinders by using them upside down. Consequently, I am beginning to mess around with 2-piece grinders, then transferring from a 2-piece to a 4-piece and using the 4-piece as a storage container and sifter.

12. I don't feel like any of my current grinders has the screen I'm looking for in a sifter. I at least want to try a grinder with a really fine screen, in hopes of ending up with a lot less green in my kief. Haven't found it yet.

Good question. I bet I have even more answers.

Check out puff grinders. Really affordable. Reputable brand. Never had an issue. A lot cheaper than Santa Cruz. Might be what you are looking for. Might not. But eh. Tonight I would provide a suggestion to you.

I don't have grinder grease, or anything like it. I'll have to get some if I ever make it to a headshop again. The friction in my grinder is very minor, and a lot of people probably wouldn't even call it friction. I don't know if lubricant would really change anything, as there is no resistance within the grinder; just minor contact, or grazing.....

.

My experience with Grinder Grease is that it did help on a mid-price grinder. It worked smoother with it.

I expected it to do the same om my SCS but IMO it actually added a very slight amount of resistance/friction. Only because the SCS was sooooo smooth with nothing on it. That smidge of grease made for an ever-so-slight amount of resistance.
I then cleaned all the grease off the threads.

anybody else have this opinion??

Thanks for the suggestion man. Can't find info on puff grinders anywhere though, it seems. Can you link me to one? Again, if anyone has any suggestions for good titanium grinders, preferably inexpensive and without giant logos, I'm all ears.

Thanks Gino, I'll check em out.

They make titanium grinders?

Space case claims to I believe, can't verify as I've never paid that much for a grinder. I've seen other cheaper grinders that claim to be titanium as well, though they may be zinc alloy in reality. Doubt there are many. Well machined aluminum are fine for me too, just figured fuck it, why not if someone knows of one?

Thanks for that report @whatitdew! I believe that's the first report of a change in the pollen dish.

How do the new teeth perform compared to the old ones? Is there any noticeable difference in performance?

I haven't used the new grinder, I'm going to wait for the non defective one. The teeth look bad ass and like a big improvement. They should help with the initial friction of turning a loaded shredder. That's one thing I like about SCS company they seem to be always looking to improve design while others have used the same old design for 20 years.

Yeah that's one thing about the SCS, with the male lid design you can't overload it that's the trick.

You might want to look at Compton Grinders, they have a small section with no teeth that is a "loading zone" they are similar in price to SCS though. I want to try one of these next!

@Aimless Ryan the best screen for me is in the space case grinders. I get perfect kief I love it.

You may want to look into a nice sifter box with a 2 piece grinder if that's something you Think you can handle in your condition.

I then cleaned all the grease off the threads.
On my new 3 piece I put some GG down on the threads of the bottom piece and immediately removed it because it interfered. The only place I use it now is just an extremely small amount under the black ring right on the male edge of the underside of the top lid that fits down into the center section. I actually put a little on my finger then apply that to the the grinder sparingly and spread it thinly and evenly.

My first Space Case happens to be sitting 3 miles away at the post office right now. The thing is, it's a 2-piece. I may try a sifting box someday, but right now I don't want to pay for anything else that I basically already have.

I still haven't received a response from SCS regarding the message I sent them over 24 hours ago. If I don't hear from them today, I'm never going to buy another SCS. I don't care how good most of your grinders are if you can't find the smallest degree of respect for repeat customers. That's just a stupid way to conduct business. Ask mix'n'ball.

What are the true benefits of a 2 PC grinder? I have one. But I never use it. It's my wife's. Didn't know she had it. Personally I prefer my 4pc. What is the advantages of a 2pc space case over a 4pc? Besides the obvious reason of kief collecting. And I do collect a shit load.

Update: I sent another email to Santa Cruz maybe an hour ago. Got a quick response this time, perhaps because I wasn't very nice in this message. I have exchanged a few emails with the dude who contacted me. No concrete results yet, but I think it's going to happen.

What does a 4 piece offer over a 2 piece?

Ime the "herb chamber" is too small to use, so my ground bud needs to be transferred to another container.

4 pieces offer less control over grind consistency (unless you turn it upside down and risk your collected keif dropping back through the screen, or you empty that into another storage container).

Imo, the ONLY good thing about a 4pce is the screen for catching keif (and maybe slightly better grip), but Imo a 2pce + a separate pollen box would be more desireable...

?? Any pictures?
would this be on the lowest surface of the top piece? The edge that would rotate on the black teflon ring?

I'm confused by- under the black ring--- wouldn't that be on the center section??
thanks

I can provide feedback on a compton grinder! I have been using a medium sized 4 piece for a while now.

It is epic. The grind is super fine (finer than the acrylic sharktooth grinder I got with my Mighty!!!), the magnet action is fucking spot on, that top piece of the grinder is not going anywhere! The grips on the sides are the best I have ever seen on any grinder by a very, very long shot. The bud grinds through the holes around the teeth to the kief screen middle chamber bud storage section perfectly without assistance being required (so long as you don't overload it. The removable kief screen is again the very best quality I have ever seen, with ease of removability another major plus!

I would heartily recommend Compton Grinders to anybody!
