Great lesson.
We currently have a retired/released service dog and there are actually numerous other reasons not to pet these highly trained companions.

For example, our dog was trained to be with someone with severe physical disabilities. Among the pages of commands we received, we learned her training included everything from helping remove clothing to turning on and off light switches.

While she is beautiful, sweet, intelligent and kind dog, she was also trained to be highly protective. This is because the persons she worked with were not able to protect themselves. Many owners, including us, used a command such as "release" to let the dog know she is not on-duty. These animals are smart and I feel [most of the time] they can read the intent of approaching persons, but sometimes training does take over. When this happens, the dog may respond with hostility to persons trying to pet, hold, or doing anything at all that gets between the dog its companion.
