OK, over with the suspense. I suppose if I were smarter(in some way), I would just let this ride for awhile to keep us 'up there' with the stars. I have already let this go long enough. It is fun to see all the comments and guesses and Vitolos gizmo actually gives me an intro.
We are still simple, very simple around here so our new design is nothing really new except for the way it is built.
When we got to know Bob, one of our wood suppliers(Walnut) a bit better, he started showing us around his entire shop area which I am guessing is several acres of buildings. He made his fortune inventing, patenting and manufacturing boat accessories. Lifts, jacks and all the stuff the guys with the pleasure boats need to have all the bells and whistles.
One day early this spring he shows us a machine that is cutting 1" stainless steel plate with water. A 55,000 PSI water jet, all computerized. He has all the machine shop tools to do just about anything, including a plating shop. And he specializes in Stainless Steel.
So I take him in a Zap heatport a couple months ago and ask "can you make me this out of SS". He laughs. "Are you kidding? You should not be wasting your time making those". "Besides, we can do this and this and this........."
So his head machinist, another Rick coincidentally, has been tweaking a design for the last month. Then testing here at Zapville, a little more tweaking and we are due next Tuesday for what we think will be the final prototype.
Our new heatport, or heat exchanger if you prefer, is turned from a solid chunk of 1" round SS stock. No tubing, no washers, no springs and pins, no soldering(only welding) no top retaining clip as the central heat transfer unit is tack welded to the SS heatport liner. All one piece when finished with the final step being an electro polishing process that shines up the entire assembly, inside and out, welds and all, to a brilliant, polished, SS look. Bob tells me it is the same process used for surgical grade instruments.
The entire assembly is then pressed into the wood with an interference fit. As soon as the heat goes on, it tightens even more as the center hole in the wood actually shrinks as soon as the Zap comes on the first time.
All the proto and design work was/is on Bob. That is what made all this possible. I do not have my final cost per unit yet but I have been assured it will be in my current range for heatport cost of production. Much of my current cost is my time as there is a fair amount of labor involved making the current version. My out of pocket cash outlay will be more for the SS design but my Zap making time will be cut 20 minutes to 1/2 hour per unit. That will make for even quicker delivery times than we currently strive for.
I'll leave us with a couple pics. Top view and bottom view. Both views show the three main pieces to the left and the completed unit on the right. There is a SS screen in the center bored hole. The center machined section fits tight at the top AND the bottom of the SS sleeve so there can be no movement between the two. Four tack welds hold the center section to the sleeve. The small round top portion is welded to the top of the center unit with the SS screen sandwiched between the two before welding.
The stem tip fit in the center heatport hole is exact. No wobble.
This is a fully machined and professionally built heatport/heat exchanger. It is made locally by local folks(project 420 even!) and finished to surgical grade specs.
We should be in full production by the end of next week, assuming our final tweaks do not make it run TOO hot. Proto #2 in the pictures is running plenty hot.
I expect plenty of questions about details of this change in design that I have not yet addressed. I actually still have some questions myself that can only be answered with a bit more time.

This is a great project and changes you have coming Rick!! What about your stems? Are the bowls for them going to be SS now as well? (And will my existing brass ones still fitem)

That looks/sounds like an awesome advancement! I was going to guess a change in materials for the heat exchanger, but then...didn't. :rolleyes:
I guess it's now time to start saving up for a zap....
And just FYI, Rick, I'm still very interested in a nanobot zap, if that ever happens in the future. :cool:

My understanding is that Rick will be keeping the stems and tips brass for now. Who knows what the future will bring....

I'm really excited about the new changes in the wind for Zapville. Wow, to look back one year or so and see all the changes and advancements made is pretty cool. Here's to you Rick and Zaplady. This next stem is for you. :cheers:

So glad to see the stem tip question come up so quickly.
For now, we are staying with the RoHS lead free brass tips that have always been used in the Zap. There are several reasons but the main ones are time and money. We want to keep our final price for a Zap very close to what it is now. If we add SS stem tips at this time, the price would have to go up more than we prefer. We also like the idea of all Zap stem tips from day one fitting the new SS design. Tooty tips all the same also.
I can see the option for SS stems in the near future but we will want to spend some time on design to incorporate some features similar to what Alan uses with his TT stems. We also will want the diameter to match our current(and past) heatport inner diameter. Stock SS tubing is slightly different in diameter than the brass tubing we have always used.
One thing that will change is the handmade Aroma Flower base tube diameter so old flowers will not fit the new SS heatport top.
Speaking of the top of the new design, did you notice the diameter of the top 'tube'? It is not tubing but 1/2" round stock drilled out to size for stem tips. Quite a bit of extra SS mass, relatively speaking, around the step tip when inserted for extra heat. That will help heat the stem tip contents quicker.
We also have a very special longer range plan utilizing this new SS design. If it works(again, Bobs idea), it will revolutionize the log vape world. That one is a ways off in the future so I will hold off on any more hints. You just got a big hint with the 'r' word. After all, how could log vapes radically change?
BTW, any sales of our new designed SS heatport come with a special guarantee. Not sure yet what it will be but it will be good.
I'll have to ponder that one for awhile.
For now, we party the rest of the day. Lots of good news this week in many categories. Hay done and in and Zapville has a new Locomotive coming. Big party in Harrison with old friends and all the kids that went to school with our two boys, now in mid 30's. And their kids.........

so the new design would come with a plain copper cup for aroma ? if so im sold on the idea . the new ss heater looks very well made thumbs up for bob and crew! as for the brass tips still fitting i think this would be a better idea to employ as 10 years of zap sales is thousands of customers who may be intrested in the new design but already own plenty of the old stems as extras or backups so why force them to buy more stems "in my opinion". i would like to see the zap site updated if this goes through to have a heatport selection where u click whether u want to regular brass heatport or the new ss one for x amount of $. anywho glad to see new things happening in zapville when glass tooties came out people where pretty suprised :lol: anywho good luck Rick, i hope the prototypes make it to the BIG LEAGUES ;) peace.

Congrats rick! Sounds like some amazing progress. I guess it will soon be time to pull the trigger on a new wood option. I am very excited for you and for us. It is good to see good people doing great things.

Looks great Rick! Nice to see the move to stainless steel. You have made a great product even better. Rattles are a thing of the past.
My heat sinks are also pressed into the wood. That is why I don't need a clip.
I do have to warn you about something that you may encounter. I was inspecting some of the TT's I made last winter and found the the heat sink were loose even though I had pressed and even hammered some into place. I found that if the wood is room temperature and the humidity is very high, it is possible for the sleeve to become loose due to expansion of the wood. Each piece of wood will act a little differently. Once the unit is plugged in and hot for a few hours, the wood will shrink and the sleeve will become tight again.
Nothing to worry about. Leaving it plugging in 24/7 seems to be the best for the wood. Sort of like having an electric heater in a piano to keep it from warping.

This is very exciting news!! Congrats guys! Way to keep advancing an already great product. I know it is not always the easiest thing, but it makes you one of the best manufacturers available!

Sorry Rick, but I have to ask:

Is it possible to retrofit an existing zap into the new heat-port design?

Cost? Risk of damage to my pretty little zap? Ect....?

You know college, I've got to believe that that would be a risky venture with your pretty gal. You've got one of the nicer Zaps around.....

Why risk damaging it? I know it's tempting (or prudent cost wise) not to spend the extra bucks, but if you can't afford the new version, put it on your wish list. Don't tempt fate and run the risk of damaging your beauty. :2c:

For me it would be a bit better if the new stainless version would run a bit hotter than the brass configuration. Either way this is a significant improvement on an already near perfect vape. Good going Rick. :D
