Surprised there has been no mention of the redesigned SCS teeth. does anyone know what exactly changed? The screen definitely looks like it is not as fine as the original and allows for more pollen.

Where did you see the teeth have changed? I needed an excuse to buy a new SCS grinder :D

Edit - nvm - I think it was mentioned previously - the teeth do look slightly different on the official website (groove about halfway up each of the teeth?)

Now to decide if I want the 4 piece or 3 piece lol

They have been touting a tooth redesign for their new limited edition shredders, see the Cookie* on their website for example.

Came to read about grinders; fucked combustion
I stumbled onto this thread 9 days ago, shortly after ordering a large 4-piece Santa Cruz Shredder. At the time, even though I already felt very good about my decision to purchase a Santa Cruz Shredder, I wanted to find out more of what people had to say about the SCS in a long, thorough thread that began years before the Santa Cruz Shredder even existed. Since then I have read from about page 120 to the end, and I received my shredder in the mail four days ago. Thankfully, due to the length of this thread, the five days I had to wait for delivery went by really fast.

The first thing I want to say about my new Santa Cruz Shredder may surprise just about everyone: This thing produces a ton of kief. (Apparently I got one of the newer ones, with a slightly coarser screen than earlier models.) So far I have only put about 2 grams of herb through it, and it has already given me nearly 2 full bowls of kief. I am not exaggerating at all. I'll share some pictures if I can find the patience to figure out how. I would also share the weight of the kief, but I don't currently own a scale that measures in units smaller than 1 gram.

Having said that, I also want to say almost everything else about this grinder is freaking awesome.

However...

There are a few things that bother me about the grinder, which I imagine are uncommon manufacturing flaws. First of all, there are a few imperfections or blemishes on the exterior. Not a big deal, but it's something I would not allow to pass inspection if I was in charge of SCS's quality control. In other words, I might be inclined to call this grinder a "second" or a "blem."

The other noticeable flaw is that the two middle sections (the piece with the collection chamber and the piece with the bottom teeth) do not line up perfectly on the exterior of the grinder, where the two middle sections screw together. This seems purely cosmetic. Unlike the couple examples earlier in this thread (from the last year, I think), where people said part of their SCS was being scratched by another part of the SCS while in use, mine does not scratch, and it seems to function how it's supposed to function. Still, it feels weird every time I use it, because I can feel the imperfection in my hands (even though I have lost about half of the feeling in my hands, from multiple sclerosis).

I think with almost any other brand of grinder I probably wouldn't have a problem with these imperfections, particularly because most other grinder brands aren't said to be the best thing since sliced bread, nor do they cost anywhere near as much as what I paid for my grinder. However, this grinder happens to be a Santa Cruz Shredder, which commands a very high price specifically because their grinders are alleged to be as close to perfect as you can get, and especially because the people who produce this grinder have made the conscious decision to offer a lifetime warranty (which I now realize is a pretty half-assed warranty, by the way, as it only covers the teeth). SCS created my high expectations by producing such high-quality grinders, as well as by establishing a high retail price for their product and by offering a lifetime warranty, so I don't think it's unreasonable for me to expect this thing to be essentially perfect. And it most certainly is not perfect, although it is a fantastic piece of equipment.

So here is what makes my particular grinder great (but not quite perfect):
  • It does exactly what it's supposed to do, easily.
  • High capacity if you need it.
  • It's so smooth.
  • It's beautiful.
  • It's tough; no new marks or dents on it after dropping it onto linoleum.
  • The powerful magnet is great. I have already dropped my SCS a couple times--once on carpet and once on linoleum, each time from about 2 feet high--and I can tell there's almost no chance the top will come off if I continue dropping it.
  • Threads are very smooth, and the grinder is easy to take apart and put together.
  • Tons of kief.

I have two other grinders, both of which are pretty bad. One is a generic grinder shaped like a propane tank, with a screen right below the bottom teeth. Because of the screen, it's basically a tall 2-piece grinder with a kief collector that doesn't work (because ground flower gets trapped on top of the screen, making the screen more of a floor). My other grinder is a generic chrome 2" 4-piece with flaming dice on the lid. I paid $25 for it at a headshop, but it would probably cost less than $5 on Amazon, and it's essentially worthless.

So upgrading to the SCS was a huge jump for me.

The large SCS is perhaps a little bigger than ideal for me. However, due to my MS (weakness of hands, lack of coordination, etc.), I wanted to make sure to get a grinder that was big enough to give me plenty of leverage when grinding. Now that I have used it a little bit, I think I would probably prefer a small SCS to the large.

MY RATING: 4 STARS (of a possible 5 stars).

Could easily have been five stars, but I feel like there was some complacency in the manufacturing/quality control process of this particular grinder, which I'm pretty sure is fairly uncharacteristic of Santa Cruz Shredders. I bet most people who have an SCS consider it perfect, but mine has just a few too many imperfections.

My rating does not reflect this, but I am quite put off by things I've read about SCS's customer service; particularly the pattern of how they respond, or fail to respond, to customers with legitimate issues. There is no excuse for that, and all it does is drive away real, existing customers who don't want to have to deal with stupid, petty, unnecessary bullshit. It's a stupid way to conduct business. Existing customers like myself will probably never buy another SCS, even though I would like to, simply because I have read these things about their habit of providing horrible customer service, and because I don't want to have to go through that myself, nor should I have to.

Especially considering the fact that there seems to be relatively few complaints about the quality of Santa Cruz Shredders, which should make it easy for them to respond to complaints in a timely manner. However, they don't. And the few complaints I've seen about the Santa Cruz Shredder (company) are major complaints, which went ignored, repeatedly, by the people at Santa Cruz Shredder. It's obviously a pattern, and it scares me as a prospective repeat customer.

If I had read about their poor customer service before I placed my order, I probably would've bought a different manufacturer's grinder, because I have absolutely no interest in dealing with unnecessary bullshit. And if any of these horror stories I've read about had happened to me, my review would have been probably 2 stars, if not 1 star, because when you force ANY of your customers to have to deal with unnecessary bullshit, you considerably decrease the overall quality (or value) of your physically awesome product. But fortunately the horror stories I've read about did not happen to me, so I gave my grinder 4 stars.

I had more to say about the things that bother me about Santa Cruz Shredder's apparent reputation of providing poor customer service, but I decided to leave out several paragraphs. I may include this other rhetoric in a future post.

I hope this review has been helpful to someone. Sorry if it is excessively long, or repetitive, or monotonous. And I just want to re-state that even though I did say a lot of negative stuff about SCS here (mostly in the paragraphs I chose to omit), this grinder is awesome. If not for the numerous complaints I've read about their customer service (which I read after I had already ordered the grinder), and if not for the minor physical imperfections of my grinder, I would probably recommend SCS 100%. However, I can't do that right now.

One more thing: This thread is freaking amazing. Best thread I've ever seen on any message board, by far. I might even go back to the beginning and read the whole thing again and again. My sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed.

Been thinking about switching my larger space case to a SCS. After a few months with a small 4 piece I have gotten accustomed to the perfect grind/shred! When you think about it the grind/shred consistency is the most important part so I gotta go with the best. I can hardly use my space case now.

Probably going to pull the trigger on a large 4 piece matte black or matte gun metal soon.

I want to see more pics,of any matte coloured shredders so post up your pics if you own one!

I love all the exclusive and limited edition shredders they, put out to keep things fresh! Makes me want to collect them lol. I got a limited copper one. I want one of the limited golden state warriors ones but already have an expensive new glass piece on layaway at the moment.

The shipping it ridiculous when buying direct. $20 flate rate to Canada. Should be about 8-9 dollars. The best deal I have seen for us Canadians is from planetvape but they haven't had any in stock for an eternity!

That doesn't look like matte to me. To my knowledge Matte finish shredders have the solid white letterimg scs logo while the glossy have the outlined logo.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too
After much deliberation I have decided to order a SCS mini 4 piece from vapefiend.co.uk

SLX grinders were too expensive and untested for me.

I was very close to importing a small 3 piece from ebay but realized I always grind too much material with my current space case ti or S&B grinder and a smaller grinder would suit my needs better. Also I've never had a 4 piece grinder so thought I'd give the kief catcher a go.

I will report back after a couple weeks usage as I see not many ppl here have a mini SCS.

I do (a 2 piece), and I've expressed my dissatisfaction with it. It's the only grinder I've ever been unable to turn when loaded up with anything but very dry bud. The blocky teeth are a drawback in a small size grinder like this. It's locked up on me a couple of times- like trying to cut a tough steak with a dull butter knife. My advice for the SCS Mini is to load light so you can actually turn it.

Thank you for the heads up.

I do intend to use very small amounts of cured bud so, fingers crossed.

I hope I have a better experience then you did though or I will have to return it.

I've never had issues with both my Puff and Zeus grinder.

They say the Zeus grinder was made with the idea of s vaporizer. They say it's properly calibrated to grind your dope to the proper grind. Not sure if it's just a marketing tool. Never had issues.

I'd say it's a marketing tool for sure, since most vapes don't really care that much what the grind consistency is, and those that do can have different preferences. If I'm grinding for the Magic Flight I want a very fine grind. For some other models that fine grind is exactly what I don't want.

I guess you are right.

I know my buddy had some real dry fine grind bud. That went into the Vapir rise and was not as good as my "fresher" loose ground bud.

Not to mention the vapes that are awesome with no grind at all..

As long as I don't have to hand bid my weed I'm fine lol. A grinder is a grinder to me really. Out of the 5 I have accumulated over the years I cannot see a difference between the grind.

My Puff is my favourite over my Space Case 2pc grinder. Then my Zeus is in second and the most used because it is slightly bigger and allows me to keep some extra weed in there. Always grind enough for two days worth lol

Something I've realized over the last few days is that the small Santa Cruz Shredder may be preferable to the large one for people like me, who have retarded hands. (That is, hands that have lost a significant amount of feeling; hands that don't always do what your brain tells them to do.) Having never seen or touched an SCS before ordering mine, I bought the large, and I love it, but I'm really beginning to feel like the small would be much better for me.

I figured this out by just holding and turning my cheap 2" grinder for a while (while empty), then doing the same thing with my SCS. Due to the significant size difference between my 2.75" SCS and my cheap 2" grinder, I realized I actually hold them both very differently while using them, and I feel like I am able to grip a larger percentage of the smaller grinder's surface, which seems/feels more efficient to me. Right now all I know is that the ideal grinder size for me seems to be somewhere between 2" and 2.75". (I have a really cheap 2.5" grinder coming today or tomorrow--the Bo-Bo Head grinder--which should narrow that window at least a little bit.)

Also, I suggest cleaning the Santa Cruz Shredder after owning it for maybe a week, just to show yourself right away how smooth these grinders feel when they're clean. I cleaned mine yesterday, even though I've only put 3 or 4 grams through it so far. Probably due to the fact that I had used it upside down a lot before cleaning it, it feels much nicer now.

I think @Ratchett also suggested cleaning the SCS. Thanks man. Mine didn't look dirty at all but a lot of ground bud would stay in the top grinding portion and I had to push thru the holes with a pencil. I thought the bud must just be really sticky.
After cleaning----voila----- same bud and 99% now easily falls thru the holes into the bottom (3 piece).
The top chamber must have been sticky even though it looked clean.

I bought the large, and I love it, but I'm really beginning to feel like the small would be much better for me.

I love the feel of the SCS 3 piece small/ 2.1". Normally a bigger tool would likely be more ergonomic than a smaller one BUT you do grip the small in a different way and it does feel more user friendly/ easier to grind with than the large--- just my experience, other love the feel of the large

After obsessively studying grinders on the internet for the last two or three weeks, I just stumbled upon a brand of grinders I had not previously heard of or seen anywhere. These grinders are branded Roor Phoenician, and they are apparently way more expensive than every other grinder brand. Is anyone familiar with the Roor Phoenician grinder? If so, do you have anything to say about it? Thanks.

Hey all was looking to get a new large 2 piece since my friend just got me a kief box. I was already looking to get a SCS since I have seen a few they are superior to anything else I have seen.

Was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Also does anyone here freeze their ground up herb and then shake to get more kief? I have been doing this for 2onths now and it works like a champ and I haven't noticed a difference in my high (I freeze for around 30 minutes for an 1/8th or more) has anyone else done this and noticed any differences?

My cheap ($9.99) Bo-Bo Head 4-piece arrived yesterday. This thing is actually pretty decent. It blows away the first two grinders I owned (generic headshop grinders that cost $15 and $25). After cleaning it, I put half a gram through it, and it did some nice work quickly, leaving me with a hopper full of relatively fine, evenly-sized grounds. The size (2.5") feels more appropriate for my hands than the large SCS (2.75"). It's pretty lightweight, too, so it would be easy to use as a portable 3-piece, by removing the piece with the screen. The label is painted on, and it has already begun flaking off, but that's not a big deal. 4 of 5 stars.

The small four piece SCS is definitely hit a sweet spot with the dimensions I Feel. It's taller than wide so it's easier to grip and use. It also can hold a fair amount of shredded product. Sorta similar to how a lot of people say the medium four piece space case is a perfect size.

I like having both of these models as a best of both worlds. The small scs is easy to take out with me and has the perfect grind. The secret to the small scs is not overloading it I find. The space case on the other hand is great for slicing through large amounts of super dank nugs with ease.
