Discontinued Zion vaporizer

Hey Zionites! TheZionNextDoor and I have been spending a lot of quality time together over the last several days, thought I would share some experiences with you.

First, TheDumbassDudeNextDoor dropped and broke his 18/14 adapter before he even had a chance to use it. Another on the way and should be here Friday, so I'll have water tower feedback soon.

In the meantime, I've been alternating between using the supplied short and long stems with very good results. The longer stem does provide a slightly cooler vape, but the shorter stem that fits inside the unit for easy travel works just fine as well with a bit of finessing.

I've found the method I use for the Firefly to work every bit as well for the Zion. I'm currently using the method of holding the button until I feel vapor and then let off and the vapor starts flowing freely. I also have used the pulse method with great results. I know as well that others are keeping the button depressed through the full draw with positive results as well, so the Zion looks to be up to handling multiple methods.

So far, I've been hitting 3-4 times, then stirring, bumping the heat a bit, hitting 3-4 times, stirring, bumping, etc., through the end of the load. I'll be trying a no-stir load today, but I've been getting even heating and full extraction with this method. Here's an abv pic from last night. On the left is fresh herbs (Nirvana Ice, for those interested). On the right is a spent load.

My first impression is that if you got in on the FC100, you will not be disappointed. Zion is still refining, but even at its current state, it delivers the goods. More to come once my new adapter arrives.

Now that's a nice sounding little review! Thank you Dude. I like to know the neighbors are doing alright

And it sounds like you are having a good time with The Zion Next Door.

Now, I just need to try & keep up with the Jones's. . . nudge nudge RBT ;)

But I know. Softly softly, catchy monkey.

Peace y'all

What a great start to the funest month of the year. July, where you can blow shit up all in the name of patriotism. Glad to hear that the Zion 10 is on track and picking up steam. Full production just around the corner.

Glad to see units in people hands. I paid for a preorder unit and i thought i read at that time it would be months yet before it shipped. Those of you who recently got units are these from early preorders like mine shipping already?

Sorry i may have missed something but i just got overly optimistic on time frame when i saw a couple people recently got units.

This is the first round of production run beta testing, Zion10 before the 90 rest of the FC100 preorders (+over 100 I think). Yours will be a bit more refined then ours.

Well only 3 so far of this version, no video from me but I've got some pics and first impressions here. Will get more when I return form the beach next week probably, but I'll probably post some stuff there too...

Anyway basic feel of the Zion is like and mflb meets Solo, the rough cut maple block of wood is very handbuilt feeling and bad a situation vibe, definitely sticks to the keep it simple principle we established omearly on here. The models after the first 10 should be more polished than mine, which has some uneven spots, and other stuff will be different.

Anyway first in following Pak's instructions earlier for first use, taste was neutral save for the nice fresh sweet maple scent of the wood.

Orienting the dial, in your left hand with the batteries facing away from your palm, thumb ready on the trigger, 0% is 12 o clock on the dial (mine actually can start at like 11 though), 50% is 3 o'clock and 100% is 6 o clock (then up til like 730 is max max, overdrive).

Ran some burn offs on overdrive and 100% with some outgassing, but netural smells still and it went away afer 3 or 4 rounds. Could've been a variety of innocuous causes, and then all good anyhow. Tastes fine, hot air, and fresh wood of anything like a Triihouse vape or log.

So two stems, and two potential screen orientations, and bowl size adjustable either way:
zuOfJ2b.jpg

Long stem on the right, with zion screen inserted like a Enano adjustabowl, upside down basket screen. Bc of the convex dome with vapes on sides, I used a hand broken course crumble of og bubba kush, full pack, got wispy hits 50-70% but great flavor and heady effects. Rode it in increments stirring thrice, clouds higher up, but would need to break up get the most out of it. Set aside for bubbler use later (will be done with 18mm male to male adapter and lsv wand screen, its a wobbly fit in Zion unlike the stems, but fine for hpside down bowl style useage).

Next bowl (swap battery positions first to maintain pair balance) I used the left one, short stem with bowl inserted like and Underdog basket screen, but closer to the joint EQ basket style (but inside the stem a little instead of overhang). Used a fluffy sc shredder full pack (so smaller bowl than before) of shrek/blue something and flavorful thin vapor at 50% after holding button for 5 seconds. Felt like a 360F kind of hit if I had to guess, going down the dial by 10% increments with two hits at each spot, clouds get bigger and bigger as effects expand, stirred once maybe twice. I'd say it was like 360-370-380-390-400-410F ish, so above 50% less visible sub 360 tasty low temps I imagine (oh I'll find out for sure eventually!). Also these are ranges really, bc if you hold down more than 5 sec then may be warmer, or more back to back hits, or longer deeper inhale. Hell you may just have more powerful lungs than I, as most do (I know my buddy will cloud this up like be does my FF), and that could heat things up more bc this pure convection relies on your breath power.

I'm also still learning my draw with this wide open airpath, shorter stem definitely helps with that too, as does the grinded pack for airflow. Also, speaking of airflow, and varying temps, there is actually an air intake at the bottom of the Zion:
Q93mdUR.jpg

And it actually can kind of work like a carb hole ala Daisy/Lily, used it to help me do less preheating for my second hits at 80 and 90%, so helped me get more like 395 and 405 kinda deal. It fluctuates basically bc these aren't exact temp settings, merely a voltage dial ala Underdog's vvps.

Anyway, much more testing to do, but as of now getting way gone in testing, rumors are true, it hits like portable desktop with trigger. It is the mflb lsv, the firefly solo. Block of wood vape with the glass straw, strong smooth tasty hits and versatile. Trying through water soon....

Oh and here some more photos in the mean time, apparently I got the perfect Zion case in New Orleans last year, little turquoise leather shoulder purse. I don't know what to tell people it is if anyone asks about it stealth wise though lol so may be weird to walk down the beach with it during the day at least

Just arrived, name tbd, impressions flowing but not ready yet... Here's a double trouble tease, more to come of course. Gonna be a long night and its coming with me to the beach tomorrow
dcEzEsz.jpg

@Shit Snacks mine arrived as well. Waiting on batteries to charge so that I can give it a solid workout tonight.
Ooooooooh you little devils! Just what are you trying to do to me eh?!

Well she certainly looks like a go'er @Shit Snacks and your early impressions further fill me with hope! Nice pix too for the size comparison btw.

I'm ready I tell ye! I say I AM READY! :brow:

O.k, so they are several years old and Cera has had her wicked way with them just a little bit but I think they might just manage a first round or two with the good Zion while the new ones are charging

Keep it coming guys!

So brief follow up with first bubbler usage before I head out, not the best shots but I'll get better ones another time. Also apologies for shiity phone camera

Last night dial at 90% (my "400F" setting until I decide differently) with full 10sec preheats before maybe 20sec inhale? 15? Who can remember though, was such a late night:
plmlAyi.jpg

RXy9pIH.jpg

Used a Zion basket screen UD style for these two bowls, but near the top of the 18mm male to male adapter to keep close to heater.

I first tried the LSV screen which was lower down earlier, but bowl may be too big/deep that way, wasted heat on half pack but I'll have to see how a full loose fluffy greens pack like that works with a group though ala true lsv style... I instead blackened said load of my first two inaugural stems' avb and a touch of green in an EQ screen, but it sat too wobbly for me and popped out a bit when I removed Zion after a hit (ofcourse it can only hold a 3rd of it being so shallow, lsv screen style can full bold like 5 times this or more...)
FP3zIOp.jpg

So the Zion screens are best and most versatile for me so far (there really nice actually, and Im someone who kinda hates mesh screens!)

Here is the avb from the second pic's bowl after hitting 3 times to kill it this am at 100% with 10sec preheat and spare air intake tapping, kept drawing after letting go of button (tapped carb at that stage last hit, not bad to retain heat a bit without power button):
gwOGcVE.jpg

Pretty even dark roast brown avb stirring every hit except for last two, just a few specks of blacker dark brown, it could probably be taken further even but i don't want to right now so dumping and getting ready to head out

Yeah, I've been using the UFO like in the pic above, but I think I'll try it later tonight too. I have only taken the pic with the D020. As you can see there was no water or CE in it... ;)

I was using the D020 last night with Venus, and it was very nice. They are a good combo for holding in ones hand while hitting. The UFO is better on the desk as it is much bigger and heavier. You have to have a M2M that is long enough, tho. It works with a slightly short one but sits on the lip and isn't quite as secure. A mouthpiece extender of some kind might be nice to get your face a little farther from the Zion. I have seen @ataxian use one on some of his builds...

These are my glass connectors.

On the left is the 18/14 I use with my Orbiter. I notice that Venus is cut differently and you have a lot more clearance. The bulge on this connector is only slightly bigger than the largest diameter of the ground glass, so it clears the back of Jessica. I have a few others that don't, so I'm happy to see this change.

On the right is the 15 cm 18/18 connector that I use as my standard stem. The ground glass at the top pretty much eliminates lip-stick, and the long path makes for a smoother draw. It also makes it easy for me to finish off a stem with a couple of WP-010 hits. The negative is that it's long and since the Zion sits on top of it, this can make for an unstable assembly with small bases. It's comfortably stable with the WP-010's 12 cm base, i.e. I can let it stand by itself without worry. I don't know how big the D020 base is but it looks small to me.

I'd post a link to these things but I don't have one, sorry. I'm not sure they're commonly sold.

Actually what I meant by that was something to extend the D020 mouthpiece to create some horizontal distance. Ataxian had stuffed a chillum or other ceramic piece into the mouthpiece of that or some similar piece to extend it. Some of the smaller glass pieces are hard to get a decent size vape out of your face. This is less of a problem with Venus than, say, my HA, but that is what I was referring to.

My M2Ms are all from DHGate and are fairly low relief. One is slightly longer then the other and allows the cap lip to clear, by a mm or 2. :)

Edit: Actually I keep saying that. It's not the cap lip, it's the top of the Zion that just clears.

While I suspect Venus will spend most of her time turned upside down into glass, since I suspect she will be my daily driver, I will likely get her a custom or at least slightly deluxified™ stem from Joda or someone. If she treats me right I wanna treat her right.

Just a quick note in the public discussion. I received the #6 test unit over the weekend and only now feel that I'm dialing in a technique that works really well for me.

Only a few growing pain issues I see, but nothing that wouldn't pretty much be assumed to be polished for final production.

Super baked right now to give more useful feedback, but I'm very encouraged. I'm a guy who had sworn off battery powered devices in favor of artisan made devices that put my safety first. So it's going to take a lot to make me fall in love with one. This chunky block might be the thing that changes my mind about that.

Yes, I will be putting up a big beach trip useage post here, but basically this little old block of wood has quickly become my new best friend (turns out I officially have unit #4, marked and signed in battery compartment). Quick tease, although my biggest hits were from the bubbler on night one, my brothers were already able to take bigger hits than me in their first useage at the same settings, so if you've got lungs, you've got clouds, and even more sippy, if you heat soak you've got easy back to back clouds. On demand, sessioning, gulps, sips, seems Zion can do it all and seemingly at any temp (really voltage ala log) Versatility barely seems to scratch the surface here...

Glad testing is going well for you guys too, Zion certainly can get you further than you thought you were gonna be, for now I find myself having the opposite effect, making my mind think of what I'm gonna post with every use, its just so fun and effective (and despite its size, baby can stealth --- quick load/cash, quick hits, strong hits, but like zero stank at least brand new, the fresh wood and ofcourse leather of my carry pouch cover herb smells nicely without sacrificing that mouthwatering taste).

So yeah ive already decided on dd status for mine, honing in on the nickname as well, I'm gonna try to keep using dry a lot to further hone technique and get the standard experience (typically limit my water use/hits to weekends, but I'm sure I'll try it with water a lot too probably even during the week, think I'm buying a GB-187 to tryion as well...). I really feel comfortable using an MFLSV analogy here, bc in use and feel that's basically what Zion is like
