Comic Books (And The Movies / Shows Based On Them)

Not officially comic-book related, the full Kung Fury film is now available on youtube -

I say not OFFICIALLY comic book, because the Marvel references are so huge I am surprised Marvel let this happen. They own 'Fury' in relation to any character name or non-realistic action film; the theme song is Hasselhoff, who (horribly) played Nick Fury; Deadpool, Nick Fury and Cable have actually time-traveled to kill Hitler [plot of this movie]; there is what I swear to god is Devil Dinosaur stumbling through a city. And all THAT I gleaned from the trailer, not even the full flick.

And in actual comic book film news, Ryan Reynolds announced principal photography for Deadpool is done.

EDIT- and now that shooting is over, we finally know who is playing Colossus in Deadpool- Andre Tricoteux

And there is a puzzling article on comicbookresources where they wonder why Kang the Conqueror is owned by Fox, not Marvel/Disney. I am puzzled by the puzzlement. Though his first appearance was in the Avengers, Kang is heavily associated with the Fantastic Four - his last name is Richards; it is implied he is related to both Reed and Doctor Doom; he kidnapped Sue Storm and took her off through time; he first appeared under numerous other names (Rama-tut, for instance) in Fantastic Four. There is more, but that makes the point, I think.

As someone who works in the law, I find all of this bizarre. Had someone who was both a lawyer and a comic book geek been in the room when these licensing deals were signed, there would have been explicit character lists, not 'families' of characters only vaguely defined.

On the upside, if Marvel sues Fox over who really owns some of these characters (like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who both studios are using), just about all of the evidence will be back issues of comic books. I'd volunteer to work that case, just to read old Avengers, X-men and FF on the clock.

Today, got to go to a writers workshop with Steven Seagle, Joe Casey, and Joe Kelly of Man of Action.

And got Kelly to sign my Deadpool 97 #1. Seriously cool dude. Duggan and Hawthorne were really cool too, but Kelly is an order of magnitude more famous, and from how he acts you couldn't tell.

On a related topic, did some light cosplay. Still working with a local artist on my full Deadpool suit, so I did a casual 'Pool in a Bea Arthur Thug Life shirt. And as you can see, I had just mugged a Klingon.

Went so nuts at the con this weekend I forgot some of what I boight. Forgot I got this thing - for the first time in my experience, a glass blower was at a comics con. She had all sorts of stuff- Zelda sword dabbers, R2D2 nails, Star Trek oil dishes. She is just starting to make water tools, and I have told her I will take the first Deadpool one she makes.

I am a good FCer and haven't combusted in a long time, but this bowl ticked too many of my boxes. BowlPool! Note not just the face on the back of the bowl, but also the tiny crossed swords and black highlights.

They'd been shopping it around to multiple networks, but word is the Constantine TV show is now officially dead. Pisses me off. Thought it was far more accurate than Gotham, and they had been teasing the Spectre, originally a Jerry Siegel Golden Age character who now has connections to Green Lantern (Hal Jordan became the Spectre at one point).

Joaquin Phoenix Rumored to Be Joining the Marvel Cabal as 'Doctor Strange'

lead_large.jpg

The Wrap is reporting that "multiple individuals close to the casting process" of Marvel's upcoming Doctor Strange movie (directed by Scott Derrickson) are saying Joaquin Phoenix "has had discussions" to play the lead role, although there is no deal in place. The report, which is couched in vagueness, comes before Marvel's big Hall H panel at Comic-Con on Saturday, where people think that Doctor Strange casting might be the studio's big piece of news outside of Avengers: Age of Ultron material.

Take this news with a grain of salt, though: Phoenix is a pretty picky actor with his projects and was long-rumored for the Lex Luthor role in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which went to Jesse Eisenberg. The Wrap also says Phoenix has "been mentioned most often" for the role and is "in consideration," and even claims that his interest in playing Luthor suggests he wouldn't dismiss a comic-book franchise out of hand.

FC stopped alerting me to posts in this thread! WTF?? Hate when it does that.

Sorry y'all, but this Joaquin Phoenix stuff is a year out of date.

They signed Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange some time ago. There is a Marvel press release and even an IMDB entry for Cumberbatch as Strange. Marvel had announced Phoenix was being considered, but he ditched.

Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also officially listed as cast for Doctor Strange, though it is not firm who they are playing. Ejiofor is rumored for Baron Mordo (why not Brother Voodoo?).

And Cumberbatch is so shitty at sounding at all American there are rumors the character is being retconned to be British. The fuck? Strange's home is, to quote the comic, "part of the mystical bones of New York City". WHY would that be the home of anyone but an actual New Yorker???? And not a coincidence, Martin Freeman has been cast as an unspecified character for Civil War and later MCU flicks. So we'll be seeing 'Sherlock' and 'Watson' in a Marvel movie together at some point. At least Freeman does excellent American (see the 'Fargo' TV show).

And in related news, we now have a new Spiderman. Looked like it was going to be Asa Butterfield, but it is instead a different Brit, Tom Holland. So we now have the following quintessentially New York Marvel characters being played by Brits: Doctor Strange, The Thing, Daredevil (love Charlie Cox, but he should sound New York) and a 2nd British Spiderman.

And I know of no Americans being considered for Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, either. Fans seem to be leaning towards Natalie Dormer, while there have been leaks indicating maybe Charlize Theron. At least Danvers isn't a specifically New York character, but she IS USAF and NASA. Wouldn't bug me if these folks were all as good as Martin Freemen or Damien Lewis at doing American regional accents, but they are not. They've already declared all of Asgard to be British (for no damn reason), so why do we need Brits who can't do the appropriate accent playing such intensely American characters as well?

4. Constantine before they cancelled it. That was epic.

I am currently reading The Avengers. Man, Stan Lee was terrible compared to Roy Thomas. It is like Kids vs Adults.

A shitload of Deadpool news. Not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR Deadpoolcomics coming after Secret Wars - one mini, Thanos v Deadpool; a new Deadpool solo title being written by Gerry Duggan; Uncanny Avengers with Deadpool as an Avenger; and the one I am most excited about, Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness, the team who did Deadpool volume 1 back in '97, are back, doing the first ever Deadpool & Spiderman ongoing title.

Here's the first official Spideypool kissy-face action from the upcoming Kelly/McGuinness

And of course the AMAZING Deadpool trailer from ComicCon. Don't have a youtube link, as every time I find one Fox pulls the video. But playboy.com still has it here (for now)- http://www.playboy.com/articles/com...m_content=entertainment&utm_campaign=deadpool

Haven't watched it yet but need to make time to do so. High Father should not be from Apokolips, though, but from New Genesis. I'm reading Kirby's Fourth World Omnibuses (omnibi?) right now.

WorfPooling at Shore Leave. Captain Jack touched my bat'leth. It was magical. Spidey is shit out of luck.

And Daniel Davis, ST:TNG Moriarty and the Ogre's dad from Gotham, knows his comics like a champion.
