Vapman

My bowl have been lose for a while now. I just pop it back on the tubes as I see fit. It's not optimal, but actually quite handy. If it had a click and lock function, the vapman bowl would be even more versatile.

But then again it would be more prone to things that could go wrong.

In time I wonder if the Vapman will end up inspiring a genre of vaporizers, built around some of the same principles. Hmmmmmmm

I sure did love my heating station, but I am confident that it will come back to me in good time.

If @vapman was just an anonymous company rather than someone I consider a friend, I'm pretty sure I would have just kept it and used it on a fireproof surface until I was satisfied that it was perfectly fine (which I think it was and is).

@vapman, @Mojo,

One of the three inlet tubes has come off the crucible. Can I reset it with a centre punch or anything else I can do besides sending it back for repair? Could you share a pic of your flaring/setting tool?
This is a tricky one. I use a flanging tool that Rene made himself especcially for the air tubes.

I believe that one FC member reported that he fixed one air tube by re-flanging it himself, but I can't remember how he did it.

After using Rene's tool, I can't think of what else I could use, mainly because these air tubes are so tiny and fragile. The tubes are also stepped inside, so you need a metal rod inside to hold it and put pressure on it on that side while you flange the tip, on the inside of the bowl.

The flanging tool actually bends the tube outward (convexly), which tightens the grip of the tube to the the crucible (bowl).

Here's the image of the tool

I've fixed two vapmans with similar issues. One that had an air tube come off completely - the abused vapman I posted here before, and another one who had I think 2 tubes damaged and I replaced all three tubes and the bowl as well.

I've also tightened the tubes on my orginial vapman once. It's very old and it had two air tubes that were just a little bit loose. It really didn't needed it, but I used it to practice on.

It's not a terribly difficult thing to do, but requires finess (a feel for what you're doing) so you don't crack the air tube at the tip (where it's flanging). Just having the tool will not ensure you get it right the time, or two -- don't ask me how I know this... shhh.

I can do this easily but the pain is the shipping costs - almost $6 each way, if you use Priority Mail.

I had given this some thought before Rene sent me the tool, but never came up with a worcable idea. I know Rene would not recommend using anything else -- Maybe OF can think of something?

I know this is not what anyone would like to hear on this, but the air tube setup is very precise.

Hope this helps.

The Vapman is such a delicate wee flower of a device. The engineer in me loves looking at the fine detailing and workmanship, while the shipwright in me can't imagine how I'd cobble it back together with my collection of beating and bashing tools...

Having said that I just finished a couple of appreciative crucibles of a fine breakfast blend, and am about to go out and appreciate me some nature, in a natural setting.

Enjoy :)

One more thing...

Like I mentioned before, the shipping is what throws a monkey wrench in the soup.

I can replace the crucible and a air tubes on a vapman for $28. This includes the shipping from me to you, anywhere in the US, but you have to ship it to me.

I prefer that you remove the existing bowl and air tubes, clean the body thoroughly and ship me only the vapman body, brackets and screws.

Just remove the screws and snap off any remaining air tubes with needle nose pliers to pull off the bowl - without harming the vapman's body, of course.

This makes it easier to not get any shipping issues due to smell, since I can't be responsible for that...

I went through the last comments and have to say once more: What a bunch of great and nice people on this thread! We should all meet one day at Nugg`s shed in Australia and the next time in California somewhere, don`t forget about beautiful Norway and all other places…;)

vapman:)

I just want to echo what @vapman has said: The people on this thread (and in this community) are amazing! So much love, respect and knowledge.

I would love to host the first annual vapman world meet up in my shed! Then each year we could visit an ambassador from another country. Everytime the year ends with an 0 we could visit Renès workshop Switzerland (where he is secretly working on a giant vapman that uses a small jet turbine as a heat source) for the biggest of all the parties!

I may (or may not) have made up the bit about the giant vapman...

Ok, I was tinkering again.

My friend got a new lathe so I decided to show him the basics while making a new one piece mouthpiece/middle section.

I only had that Oak Dowell to mess with. It's really hard wood but it was handy at the moment so I said "What the hell."

I don't have the jigs, so nothing is really centered correctly.

This mouthpiece is the same length of the original so it fits inside the Egg in the same way.

Thanks to @Vapormatic who sent me some locking pins!

To be honest, I like the original middle section and mouthpiece better. It looks much better with the design of the body. The curves look much better. So I think there's no reason to mess with perfection.

Also, this was way much more work than I anticipated.

René knows what he's doing.

Here are the pics:

EDIT: I also made a Walnut Dark Chocolate to see how it looks.

I think it looks pretty good:

I've tried all different ways and not a cloud or even a wisp in sight. Waiting impatiently for the return of the station or an alternative.

Sorry you're having troubles, but IMO the return of the station is a ways off and it itself was an alternative to the traditional torch (which 'always works').

What sort of torch are you using? How big do you have the flame adjusted? Does your herb dry out and darken?

TIA

It does take a little time to get used to. I reiterate what OF mentioned on torches, and I'll add how much do you pack in the crucible? If you're not getting vapor, but getting heat, you should try drawing faster or slower depending on bowl size.

Try heating in short 2 -3 second bursts waiting for a few seconds between every blast. Hold up to a dark surface to see if you can see wisps of vapour escaping from the middle section and mouthpiece. When wisps of vapour appear, draw on the vapman for ar least 5 - 10 seconds. Repeat until the load is a nutty brown colour. If this doesnt work then make the flame bigger on your lighter.

It has been said before .. dont be afraid to give it some heat ... the vapman can take it and the worst that can happen is you scorc h your load. I think it really helps to learn the limits by over doing it.

I occasionally over torch. Either cos im too high or careless or ive switched lighters and one is more powerful. All part of the organic experience and partly why i love the vapman so much.

No no no! We must get you up & running in an analogue styleee!

This may sound extreme but I say torch the 'man for a good 12 seconds - the tip of the inner blue flame should be just touching the bowl.

If after this you experience not 'even a wisp in sight' then your bowl must surely be empty! ;)

We can fix all the ills of the world in this thread! So can anyone provide some insight into where the magic eraser has been stored over the past year while we moved? I think Vman is due for a bit of a clean... Given the vapour production when empty... ;)

Edit - to find anything in our new house one only has to ask the spousal unit. A wee piece of wet magic Eraser and I'm almost spotless! I could use a guitar string to check the wee airlines, but at least we're nice and shiny on the inside (and I gave my guitar away pre-move, to a kid with a strong interest in learning). Magic Eraser was, of course, in it's small box, in a ziploc bag, in a bucket of cleaning supplies, under a sink I wasn't aware was actually in the house. Bloody typical. I can find the Acetone tho, and that will provide the final polish a bit later. First one must test the current level of cleanliness, just to verify it was indeed adequate...

Can you ask your SU where my Vapman screens are? I've unpacked everything and still can't find them.

Hey, as long as you're asking......I lost my innocence a while back? It's been a while I guess, but somehow I think I'd like at least some of it back......

TIA. I'll standby.

Sorry all - I'm just back from dropping her off at the airport. I can't help anyone besides @Stu, and only because I know where my Vapman screens are (the vape desk was packed into a quickly unpacked box ;) )

For a nominal fee I'll ask her when she gets back. But idealism and innocence? Why not ask for something hard, like virginity, or something fun, like that very first time you ever tried MJ back in the day! Or whirled peas... ;)

And I lost my youthful idealism, but I've lost all hope on getting it back.
