Get ready for Little Amsterdam on the Prairie: A Native American tribe that operates a successful casino in eastern South Dakota is about to become the first to enter the legal marijuana business, and if they're successful other tribes may follow suit.
The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe’s governing body quietly voted last week to legalize pot for recreational use and welcome tourists 21 and older to consume it on tribal land. Tribal attorney Seth Pearman says the plan is to cultivate an atmosphere similar to Amsterdam, the Dutch capital famous for marijuana-dispensing coffee shops and popular with weed-seeking tourists.
“We hope to curb some of the black market and create a safe environment where people can come and get high-quality marijuana products,” he says.
Visitors will be required to consume the drug on the reservation, and only one gram will be dispensed at a time. Authorities hope the limit will encourage social use and discourage problems with state authorities.

Think it's smart for them to have the 1 gram sales limit. Essentially limits sales to what will be consumed on the reservation. That will keep the states and Feds out of their hair. But it's the thin edge of the wedge that will ultimately lower resistance toward legalization in those states.

OLYMPIA — The Suquamish Tribe and Washington State Liquor Cannabis Board have signed what they say is the nation’s first state-tribal marijuana compact.
Board officials said in a news release the 10-year agreement signed Monday will govern the production, processing and sale of pot on the tribe’s land located in Kitsap County.
The compact will head next to Gov. Jay Inslee for approval. A bill passed by the 2015 Legislature allows the governor to enter into marijuana agreements with federally recognized tribes in Washington state.

I hope they find a way to make an example of these law dogs and the strong arm, illegal tactics they used. If you really want to get the attention of local law....drain some of their departments budget by fighting this and winning a judgement.

At this point the Indian casino that we went to the other day had a sign posted "No Cannabis on the roadway driving into the casino. That was the Quinault Tribe in WA where cannabis is legal in the state. I think it's a fairly new sign. I hadn't noticed it a year ago. So all the tribes aren't interested in participating in the cannabis business.
They could change their mind too at a further date when they realize how much money they could make.
