Underdog Log Vapes

SSVUN~YAH

You Must Unlearn, What You Have Learned...
Hey there Underdogs.. it's a lazy Sunday but we managed to get something productive done and put some nice Beech 'Vape Specials' up on the website. Still working on other pieces for a refresh but that will be a while yet before those are done.

Beech 'Vape Specials'
zuin80.jpg

It's possible that your Dog is running a little on the cool side of 'spec' but it's also possible that it's an issue with your material.. either too moist, strains that just don't produce much vapor, etc. It's always difficult to troubleshoot things over the internet. It's also possible that you haven't fully acclimated to the differences of vaping yet, as others mentioned it's not quite the same as smoking and especially dabs. That all being said it does sound like maybe your temps are a little low.

If you're still struggling after playing around with all the communities Dog suggestions then please get in touch with Underdogette so she can try and help you resolve things from a troubleshooting standpoint. :peace:

Excellent!! Thanks for the link, there are like millions of post here.... I need a reading break already HAHAHA!!

Just got to this post and wanted to comment. Beautiful dog!! I dont see many other Shibas around. I think i own his/her brother :D

Is he/she the only pet you have? Mine loves people, loves my kids, loves other people's kids even... But Neko wants to eat all other animals. Cats, huge dogs, squirrels, birds, horses... He swears he rules the world. Still... i love him!!

And i altered the picture to keep it "kind of" on topic HAHA!!!!

Introduced 2 people to vaping today with my Underdog. Neither had any vaping experience other than, "I used a Volcano at a party once..."

Both were amazed how easy it was to use, the big clouds they were able to achieve though my bubbler w/ the NonG adapter, as well as the quality and taste of the vapor.

Thanks again Underdog!

I still haven't gotten one yet but after reading that I figure this may be the last vape I ever buy....

So go big or go home, yeah? Just asked for a quote on 2 possible custom designs :]

I've got your message in my inbox, and will be answering soon. Just need to ponder some things before replying. Welcome to the dog pack! :)

Basically posting to subscribe to the thread and say hello!!

Im completely new to log vapes, and in honesty i came for the wood :D but i have been reading this thread for a couple hours and im getting excited.... and a bit confused too though.

My only vapes are an Arizer EQ and an Arizer Air. These log vapes seem to be another animal entirely with different voltages, VVPS or dimmers, nylon stems working on some but glass on others and so on... Lots to learn it seems.

Just ordered a beautiful piece of buckeye burl from Snappo that i want to turn into a UD. It will take some time though as i live on military disability and have to save the funds first. But i cant wait, and it looks like there is plenty here for me to read and try and learn in the meantime!

So hello  .....Ill go back to reading now
Welcome to the Pack! I bet that buckeye burl will turn out beautifully! You won't be disappointed in your purchase!:wave:

So I'm still struggling to find the sweet spot with my Econo-dog. I have two different strains that i've let sit out to dry for about 48 hours. I'm still not really getting good vape hits. I let my unit warm up for about 40 minutes and the first hit combusted. This thing requires a lot of finesse.

I feel like i have a whole new set of problems now. Quite a few of my hits are combusting.

How do you guys hit your units, with the unit on a table? vertically, horizontally? how far do you place your stems into the heating units?

WOW.. You guys are truly WONDERFUL people!!!!

To the anonymous person who offered to pay for my vape... I owe you a huge amount of gratitude. From every inch of my being. Thank you! Your generosity is above and beyond words.

It means worlds honestly. Without getting into much personal details i truly have a lot on my plate at the moment so this is HUGE to me. I was looking into selling some stuff to afford this... And now i wont have to worry about where the funds will come from, and equally importantly, how to explain it to the wife LOL

You people truly are amazing. Im normally full of words... Now... Speechless.

THANK YOU!! If i can ever repay the favor, please let me know!!!

I hit mine horizontally. At least for the first pull or two. How do you pack your stems? I've found that the best way to pack the nylon stems is to suck up the herb like a straw, brush off the excess and lightly tamp it. With your first draw, just do a couple small light puffs. If you draw too hard/fast with the first draw, it can pack your herb too tight. Also, if your unit is running hot you can insert the stem half way or use a UD supplied extension cord. Hope you find your happy place.

I don't have an EconoDog but these techniques seem to help with the regular Dogs.

At this point I'm not sure what to think, it's kind of baffling. If you're getting dark brown ABV (you mentioned this previously) and/or combusting then there certainly isn't any lack of heat.

I can't think of a scenario in which you can get dark brown/combust without getting vapor extraction other than if the strains are just ones that don't vape particularly well. :hmm::shrug:

As my personal vape I've been using an Econo-Dog for a few months, pretty much as Madcap mentioned above. I insert my stem all the way and a single hit gets the load to medium brown and extracts 90% of the vapor a second gets it dark brown and the last 10%. I'm using a 6' extension with my power supply, without it I'd probably be pushing pretty close to combustion.

The Econo-Dogs run hot, by design, to maximize vapor production.

My technique for packing the stem is to just suck in, anything that falls out stays out and anything in the stem gets hit.

I just put the 3' extension on, first hit still combusted. I'm now having difficulty not combusting. I'm all out of ideas, can anyone please give me any suggestions?

Could it be you are grinding too fine? If it's too fine the air won't be able to get through and would just keep heating the herb till it combusts. You probably want to grind/chop your bud so it is like little flakes if that makes sense. You need the air to be able to flow through and around your bud, which is admittedly more difficult with the nylon stems.

I bought my UD to use the nylon stems but discovered I like the glass ones much better. Perhaps if you got a glass stem and could hover it over the heating element? Maybe use an O-ring to make a makeshift stopper because you don't have the regular core. Much more visual feedback with the glass stems.

As Underdog said you are obviously getting enough heat which is better than not enough!

Just curious... Do you mean it actually combust? Catches fire, turns the herb to ash? Or just blackens the herb?

I can turn my EQ up full blast, fan on 3, and it will completely combust. The bowl starts to glow red and the herb is turned to ash.. But in the Air if i use it on highest temp for a full session (10 minutes) i get blackened herb on the top closest to the heater.. Im not sure thats combusted though? I just figured it was overly vaped.... Then again maybe im overly vaped

If it is indeed getting too hot maybe one of those cheap dimmers might help?

I dont even have this vape yet but a quick thought i had.... maybe try and suck through the stem once its loaded, before you put it in the unit and see how much restriction you have. This could help determine if its how fine/coarse its ground?? I know i do this to check to see if i packed my arizer air stems too tight. It would make since if once its packed, if you can get sufficient air flow through the stem outside the unit that it wouldnt be how its ground? Maybe not too as i dont have this vape YET.

Anyways, been doing a lot of reading. I like to vape at somewhat higher temps sometimes. And like to be able to take a few quick hits and go back to what im doing... Im loving all the options. The "1 hitter" stems sound great for when your busy and just taking a few minute break, and the glass stems for chill out sessions while watching TV or surfing FC!

Also the option to add a VVPS to get different temps.. the option to keep it on 24/7 and just reduce the voltage when your not using it for a while... Im LOVING all the options

I really thought id have a bunch of questions to ask... But every time i think up something to ask i find it, already asked and/or explained, hidden in here!! Great collection of info between here and the "Best of thread"

See... i told you normally im full of words... I didnt even have questions and i still wrote a novel.. sorry bout that hehe...

I agree with @Petro, look in the core orings for a stopper to use glass stem. Or if u like the SS over glass, @Ed's TnT sells WonG's and stems with a SS bushing that go around the outter diameter of the core like glass.

Also make sure not to put too much in the stem, I wouldn't load any higher than the rim of the basket screen. If you are packing it all the way to the end of the SS tip then that is a sure-fire way to combust, especially with a fine grind.

Maybe try a few other strains. Not sure if that's possible where you live, or for your budget, but some strains can give you a lot less vapor and less hits per bowl.

I've had some strains where the clouds are endless and others that only seem to create wisps. But they both did their job it aeemed. Strain definitely impacts vapor production though and is worth trying. I've noticed some strains take a lot longer to fully roast/extract, they just never seem to go dark brown regardless of temp or how many hits even after vapor is no longer producing.

Long story short, there are no absolutes when dealing with plant matter.

I have the econodog that I was gifted by the wonderful people at underdog. I combusted the very first time I used it because I had the stem too full and loaded too close to the top.

Start out with a very small amount and press it down a little. Hold the dog horizontally or even slightly tipped down to make sure nothing falls out of the stem. lately I've tried holding it upside down and holding the stem like you'd use a chillum (sp ?)

You want to make sure to keep drawing when the stem is in the heating element. If you pause that's a chance for it to heat up too much and combust. That's why it's also important not to stuff too much in there and reduce flow.

Once you have a smaller load mastered then buildup to larger ones.

best of luck, i'll try to think of more advice.

edit wood villain he probably means actual combusting. The econodogs are hot especially plugged straight into the wall without extension. It does take some getting used to, perhaps compariable to running a regular dog hotter with a vvps or shorter cord to all you dog owners who haven't tried the econodog.

sometimes the word economy infers there is a hit in performance, that's certainly not the case with the econodogs.

Yup, I mean actually combusting. Ash remaining in the stem, tasting and feeling in my lungs like smoke, not vapor. It seems to be a very fine line between packing too little or too much. I have yet to find a replicable way to pack the perfect amount.

I feel like i've tried almost everything with respect to how much to pack and how to insert the stem. I'm going to pick up another strain today, but budget wise, i'm not going to go crazy looking for a strain that vapes well, that defeats the whole purpose of purchasing this vape.

I'm almost willing to concede defeat and just accept that I can't direct draw out of this thing. I'm running out of manipulations to test out.
