I would like to see this thread as a place for cautionary tales about Members' experiences with edibles. Maybe even Stickyed in the "Cooking..." Forum.
Edibles are not to be taken lightly!
I made a batch of Medicated Chocolate Chip Cookies last week. I used some reclaim, some BHO, and some Omega Labs Oils as well. I did not really measure. I added a lot because I was afraid they would be too weak. Boy was I wrong. One person who has a fairly high tolerance ate about 2/3 of a cookie and ended up falling down and very disoriented. ( this is an older user and falling is NOT good!). I waited until a time that I could test properly. That was yesterday. I ate some buttered toast at 7:30AM. Then the cookie about 1/2 hr later. Two hours later I started to feel it. It ramped up for another hour almost to the point of nausea.(I have a high tolerance). That cookie knocked me the Fuck out!. 12 hours later and still feeling it. I had to abandon the idea of blasting some errl because I could barely walk. Driving, forget it! I did a dab about 8-9 hours in, and that was a BAD idea! Back to LaLa Land. I have NEVER had a feeling like this from cannabis in over 33 years of use! So now the cookies must be eaten in tiny doses.

You have to start measuring a bit. Keep track of all ingredients so you can refine the recipe next time. The wild ride experience tends to happen when you have no regular recipe and routine. Don't just throw the kitchen sink at it, get some metrics.

It was probably a little over a year ago I had some ABV and wanted to try making a chocolate, peanut butter milkshake. I didn't think it would be very potent because I was using ABV so I used about 3/4 of a cup finely ground. I made enough for three servings. I had a friend over she had a glass and I froze the rest. We drank about half of our milkshake, and put the rest back in the freezer. We didn't feel anything after a couple hours in so we blended the milkshake in the blender because it had started to freeze then we drank the rest. About a half hour after that we started feeling it. :evil:We knew we were in trouble because the rest of the shake that we had just drank wouldn't be kicking in for at least another half hour.

A couple hours later we were too medicated and we fell a sleep. Later my husband drove my friend home. We called for pizza delivery and I just laid on the couch I didn't feel like eating anything. I was feeling every breath and the pounding heart. I slept OK but was so wiped out the next morning. I still felt medicated and I needed to drive and go to work. Luckily I live fairly close to where I work. It was the longest day, 6:00 that evening before I felt almost normal.

Edibles can be a good thing but it's hard to judge how much to take. After you have ingested them it's too late once that start to kick in, there is no antidote to make everything better. It's only time that will bring you back to your normal self.

my current butter ratios have been good. i size my cookies kind of small.

1 cookie isnt enuff and 2 is almost too much. i guess the real problem is in the waist-line after finishing a batch.

ive been thinking of trying out coconut oil in gel cap soon. costMo had a good deal on a tub.

EDIBLES, the REAL Vicodin replacements. i love them.

I've "scared straight" a few friends through the years. In anticipation of a Paul Simon / Bob Dylan concert, a friend and I ate 3 big brownies, where just a tiny, little brownie would have sufficed.

We had great seats - 13 rows center on the floor. But I couldn't stand up longer than 15 seconds, my eyes were swimming in my head. Needless to say, I have a bootleg copy as a remembrance: 'cause I can't remember too much at all. Sonics aren't great, anyway, when you're sitting at crotch level in the standing crowd.

Just because the thread discusses medibles.

It was 1969 or 70 and I made my first brownies. Remember, this is Mexican brick weed days; I was feeling financially pinched as I stirred my $15 lid (after cleaning) into the mix.

My first taste came shortly before my wife and I left for a show at the University theater. It was a production of Thornton Wilder's By the Skin of Our Teeth.
In act two, sounds of thunder rumbled and rains of mylar streamers dropped from the rafters, drama as the 40 days of Noah's flood began. And so did I. It was wonderful.

Today, even cereal with the milk in which I cleaned my Solo stems, scares me.

Effective control over dose titration is essential.

I've tried to over-medicate to get a sense of how potent it can be but just haven't hit it yet (unless alcohol is brought into the mix). I know I have mentioned the most potent experience I have had with medibles, I felt like I was traveling through space and time in a very incoherent manner but all the while it felt great!

My friends, on the other hand, are not nearly as lucky :p

ive learned to make medibles that can be titrated. brownies I can never judge... tinctures tend to be to strong.... but there are times when my body and mind need such a high dose of cannabinoids I will actually have a mild trip from it... which basically means sitting on the couch and "introspecting"... or watching the walls wiggle.

lately ive been making a wilton melf infusion of infused coconut oil saturated into enough wilton chocolate to make it soild and then dip pretzels in it. you csn just eat a couple or eat a bunch... effects just increase with dose...

just dont do what I did and make 2 batches 1 medicated and one regular... then forget which bag you were eating from and devour a who bag of medible pretzels... whoops:uhh: I had to just lay on the floor after that one.:whoa:

:argh:curse you why must you be more delicious than regular pretzels!

I gotta figure out how to clean my AA stems in milk.

I made some brownies once that scared me off edibles for a few years. I used cannabutter, but since I had never gotten them strong enough, I added some kief. Instead of mixing the kief into the butter, I just added it into the batter. Big mistake. It didn't mix thoroughly and there were 'pockets' of kief that made certain portions weaker/stronger.

First brownie I had from this batch was fine. Then one night, my husband asked if he could have a corner of mine. Next thing I knew, he was so high he couldn't lift his head off the bed. I still hadn't gotten off and thought he was just being a wimp.

I didn't get off on these brownies until the next day. Almost 12 hours after I had ingested it. It was the weirdest thing. And when I got off? Holy shit... I had tunnel vision and vertigo so badly I thought I was having an aneurism.

I can see how people get so high they think they need hospitalization. And it's taken me about 5 years to be able to try edibles again. And now I'm back to not being able to get them strong enough...

The first time i made brownies, I divided my small batch into 8 sections.

The first night, I ate 1- and got pleasant effects.
The second night, I ate 2- and woke up on the couch at 3am trying to keep my eyes open long enough to make it to bed.

I remember walking around outside, then playing a game, and putting on a movie and thats about it. Some nausea, but that was probably anxiety because i was so medicated. Each brownie i make has a little over 5ml of coconut oil in it since i use the same recipe and pan size, and my abv all comes from the same vape (My PAX). For me, 10ml of oil is "Overmedicated". I imagine 20ml of oil to be "The sky is falling", but in a bad way.

The lesson? Always try to find a method of dosing. For me, every batch of coconut oil is tested in 5ml doses, or 2ml if i suspect it to be especially strong. This is consistent with my 151 tinctures and my coconut oil, with the later being a little more potent.

An easy way to test the strength of your oil is to make gelcaps and dose using ml's.

EDIT: I have yet to have a horrifying experience with edibles, but I've had some anxious ones where i did not expect them to be as strong as I had anticipated. This usually happens when i vape LOW with my Pax instead of finishing the session on Medium or High. Overall, I'd say i haven't had a bad experience with edibles yet.. Now dabs, that can be another story.

My theory to prevent “overdosing” on edibles is portion control.

I don’t use oil or extracts, I use roughly ground raw flowers (I kinda’ like the taste).

I measure out a heaping ½ teaspoon per dose into a dish then take about two cookies worth of cookie dough & press the dough into the MJ. Then put each large ‘cookie’ into a cupcake pan to bake (325 to 350F for 25 to 30 min.)

This way I know exactly how much is in each portion. I eat one & it hits really hard, 6-8 hours or more. (Of course YMMV, I weigh less than 150 lbs. & have a relatively low tolerance.)

[On a concerning side note in a non-legal state: I was reading our laws recently & if you bake MJ into an edible, if you get nabbed, they can weigh the edibles and count the net weight as MJ itself. That could add up to a pound or more pretty quickly in the eyes of the law. I recall a kid in Texas getting a severe prison term for this reason.]

i get vaked and hit vongs is it so wrong?

I gave a friend some of my eddies and he and his SO ate too much after not waiting long enough. Thought they were weak. The second mistake they made was to not have a baby sitter.
She got so paranoid that she thought the baby was choking because she was hearing things. The baby was fine. My friend took the baby from her before it escalated. Told her to relax and take a shower. He put the baby to bed. She comes out, a bit calmer and embarrassed at the scene. Then goes to check on the baby and " oh my god the baby is dead." NOT really! Freaking out all over. He did not go to work the next day over that ordeal! Baby blissfully sleeping through it.

The statistic that there has never been a single recorded instance of a marijuana overdose is often invoked by those of us who rightly regard weed as having none of the toxicity present in alcohol and tobacco, but with the explosion of marijuana-infused edibles in legal states and now on the net, THC concentrations capable of overwhelming users are the norm.

Marijuana users with relatively low THC tolerance would do best to steer clear of edibles until they have been vaping or toking for long enough to remain calm even if they get "too high". My first ever weed joint, smoked many moons ago, hit me like a sledge-hammer, leaving me prone, battling the sensation that the ground was pitching and tilting beneath me, and unable to formulate a coherent sentence, so I shudder to think about what a first-time marijuana user would experience were they to eat too much magic cookie, rather than just take a few tokes too many, as was done in the past.

I've been too high on edibles many a times, but I like being too high so it's okay :)

But, I have found lately that I get great medicinal value from microdosing edibles. Helps with stomach problems, general mood and muscle pains.
How would you describe a 'micro dose'? 5mg?

When I make my edibles I like them really strong. But I have no idea how many milligrams are in each one.

Is your micro dose a quarter of your 'too high' dose? A tenth? Do you make them yourself, or buy them?

Do you get just a little high?

Plenty folks like to use a lot of cannabis and have a high tolerance but there is a state where you can be too high. It's not a fun place to be so don't use too much just to see how high you can get.

It can take several hours before the full effect can happen, then it's too late and there is nothing you can do except ride out the storm - like 24+ hours sometimes. When taking edibles and you don't know how you will react don't plan for anything like driving or taking care of children for several hours.

I can't emphasize this enough don't over do the edibles.

I have no way to meassure accurately like that, so say if I make caps I do the math and figure out how much hash is in each capsule.

For me a good microdose is 0.05 to 0.1 grams of hashish.

Since I make them my self and always try them out on my self first I feel I'm pretty good at hitting the spot.

I never let an edible noob start out with a high dose, no matter how much he or she has smoked or vaped on their lives, and @CarolKing is right in her advice :)

Recreationally I too prefer large doses.

i was in thailand a few of times in the 70s and 80s. we decided to make pot cookies one day. we had already made hash using the rubbing alcohol method. a word of advice, do not try to boil rubbling alcohol on a gas stove. nobody died but the kitchen had a couple flame marks on the wall. :)

i had made hash like this in the states and it usually came out brown and dry. this stuff came out jet black and it was sticky. we just stuck a golfball size wad of it on the wall near the bongs and would tear off a piece as desired.

anyway, the house girl whipped up some cookie dough and we put about an oz and a half of thai stick (30 sticks worth) and a bunch of little chunks of the hash into it. we jokingly said the little black chunks of hash were chocolate chips. there were 5 of us, all seasoned pot smokers. we each ate a cookie, then sometime later as we were doing bongs, we each ate one or 2 more cookies.

the game broke up soon after the high started. when it hit, we were all thinking something like OH OH...eating a pure sativa is way different than the crosses i usually ingest these days.

two guys left and three of us went to separate rooms to try to handle the high. i had eaten a lot of acid/mescaline etc in HS and after. this pot high was so intense i was seriously worried about my mind. it was the first time i asked god to please bring me down and i would stop doing something or other. i was serious.

after a couple hours of staring at the wall, walking around, talking myself down i hear the maid yell out to my room mate, TOM WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME???

she had eaten a cookie too.

we threw the rest of the cookies out the next day. a couple days later i noticed that the guard dog wasn't around. it turns out the poor thing got into the cookies and was kind of zonked out for a couple of days. the poor thing was a bit off after that. i would see it standing there just staring at the ground in front of it like it was trying not to fall over. i feel really bad about that.

it was a terrible experience and i didn't eat pot again for 20 years. around a year ago i made a few batches of cannabis coconut oil using a magical butter machine; 3 ounces of bud to 16 oz of oil, and i now eat one to 3 capsules a few times a week and i still get uncomfortably high sometimes. i usually vape about .05 of a gram at the 2 hour mark to jump start the high.

what i have learned from eating pot regularly is that i can't tell if 2 capsules will get me not very high, just right or a bit too high. i have to use a timer so that i don't vape a bag of bud after the 2 hour mark or i'll get the racing heart (it was 105 yesterday from eating 2 capsules) and panicky feeling. i was sniffing pepper to calm down a bit.

it's the same pot, the same dose taken at the same time before or after a meal and sometimes the high is perfect and sometimes it's not. it's very annoying as i can vape one bag and know exactly how i'm going to feel.

i tend to ramble when i'm stoned. :)
