Underdog Log Vapes

Hi izzy,

1) I don't see anything wrong with using that board, it should do the job nicely and is cool that it has controls and a readout. You'll just want to make sure you get a power supply to drive it that is at least 1v+ higher than you'll want to use with your Dog since the board only steps down. A 15v or 18v power supply might be a good candidate, or one of our Econo-Dog power supplies. The current output is more than enough.

2) This one is really hard (ie not really possible) to answer without a lot more information unfortunately. To get a real answer you need all the data indicated in this online calculator (it has descriptions of what they mean): http://www.batterystuff.com/kb/tools/calculator-for-load-specific-run-time.html

Myself and quite a few users have had good luck with this battery pack (variable voltage built in too) combined with a set of quality Panasonic batteries and get 4-6 hrs of run time. Battery Pack on eBay

Hope this info is somewhat helpful! :peace:
Thanks for the advice! I'm glad that voltage converter will work. The ones without the displays are even cheaper. I have the one with the display, but I ended up getting a 2nd one without the display because the display makes an annoying whining sound when it's manually turned off.

That ebay battery pack looks awesome. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've been using my UD for months, and I love it, but I wanted to experiment with raising the heat a little. I'm not even sure if I'll like the modifications, but I figure since it'll only cost <$20 for the experiment, it's worth a try.

Found a neat little case on Amazon and wanted to share with you guys:

It fits our little battery pack from Ebay pretty well, and we noticed it also holds the nylon stems pretty nicely too. You'll notice there's two sizes for this case; this is the Passport Essential size. We just ordered the standard sized one to see how it holds the glass stems, and we'll let you guys know when that one arrives. It's supposed to be a little taller than this one.

I ordered a cheap nectar collector from a vendor on dhgate and before I was able to test it out on concentrates I found a new purpose for it

Usually I'm not a fan of water filtration with the Underdog but this is just about the right amount ... it cools the hit off but it doesn't ruin the flavor.

I am thinking I may want to get an econo-dog to try out a log vape. I have a few questions though. What is the difference from a standard UD vs Econo-dog besides 12v or 17v. Can I leave the econo on 24/7? Is it compatible with all UD accessories besides charges? Can I use one of the portable battery packs that are being posted about or will it damage something? If I get the econo can I also get the mini? Is the mini as powerful as a standard dog? Any coupon/discount codes?

Sorry for all the questions.

The Mini is the least powerful, and it was made w/ the small load SS tips and the battery pack in mind, and they heat up really fast... It uses at about half the voltage of a standard UD IIRC (I may be wrong, I do forget :spliff:), and can get about 2x the battery life than the standard UD's w/ the battery pack.. I don't believe you can use the Econo Dog w/ the battery packs due to the voltage not going up high enough on the battery pack, but I don't own a battery pack so I could have that wrong.. All the stems can be used on any of the UD's but the Econo Dog needs it's own Power Supply.. I imagine the Econo Dog would be fine for 24-7 use, but they heat up pretty fast so it may not even be worth it to you  I may leave my dogs plugged in all day some times, but I never go 24-7 any more.. I just like to baby them now... Not that they need it though..

I've read on your guys site that the life of the underdog is like having a set number of running hours so by leaving it on 24/7 you're putting more wear on it. I actually don't know if that's true. Coming from vintage stereos, as long as the idle power consumprion isn't an issue it's best to leave them on 24/7 as its not the being on that's bad for them but the transistion from off to on and on to off. I would think the same thing would go for the underdog that it's the transition from off to on and vice versa that would cause the majority of wear and tear over time rather than leaving it on 24/7 since all you have is a heater and essentially a heatsink. I wasn't sure though so I figured I'd bring it up. But honestly when it comes to reliability, when does anyone have a problem with their UD? I feel like mines built like a tank and it such a simplistic design that I feel like it's bullet proof and could last 100 years easily

I remember hearing that in the past, about the cooling down causing stress to the resistor.. I guess it's a trade off.. If you use a VVPS you can turn it down to a voltage that doesn't cause as much wear while in idle.. That's probably the best thing you can do  But IIRC the new SS heaters are pretty durable and are likely less of a concern when cooling down often  I'm just guessing..
I don't know how I feel about that since I primarily use my Mini for concentrates rather than my bigger twigs.
 Well that's how I feel about it.. I never used the minis w/ a VVPS though, so that may explain the difference.

Not using a VVPS, just a 15v power supply. But that power boost would be the difference since the Mini actually gets hotter and if I don't inhale fast I don't lose the heat which is also good for making sure the oils don't run.

But even without the 15v supply I noticed combusion from the normal supply when plugged in for less than 30 minutes while my UD that's in all day rarely reaches that high of temps.

Thats the theory I subscribe to. How long has my Kings Jester been running 24/7? How long has this thread been open :)

Damn! 15v! Never used a mini or any log at that voltage.. I remember seeing your video and being really impressed, since my experience w/ the mini dogs wasn't like that.. When I was using the minis I was just using the standard UD Power Supply, and it was only passable for the SS stems IMO.. and only dry ripping.. never got combustion though

EDIT: Curious which Stock Power Supply you are talking about.. The old CUI Stacks that pulled about 13.5v or the newer ones that pull about 12.4v? I used the minis w/ the newer one.

I have a couple, one is the newer one and it runs about 12.3, I have another that doesn't give me a logical readout on my multimeter. I am guessing that one is higher volts but its not a CUI stack I have one of those but it rarely works anymore.

I do normally prefer my UD above 13v, when I had a VVPS 13.4 was my target area.

My mini cranks out the vapor with the older CUI power supply and is ready in 3-4 minutes warm-up But doesn't really get hot enough for me with the new slimmer ones even if left on for an hour or more. My UD that's about an inch taller then the mini will take a load to combustion in a couple minutes if i use the CUI stack but runs at a perfect temp with the new wall wart and gets up to temp in around 10 minutes.
