Discontinued The Grasshopper

Those wires "could" be the source of the off gassing. I believe that this was also the case with the Ascent, which they fixed in later production runs.
Yeah this visible wire through the air inlet is a dealbreaker for me til I receive confirmation that there are no wires in the airpath. Surely they wouldn't have used wires in the airpath given how thoroughly engineered everything is on this device! Lol

Both of my units had a minor 'new unit' taste to them, but much less than most vapes I have tested.

@Edwardo I would be interested in the sintering process video!

I got an email back from Trevor about the mouthpiece:

Hey Buzz,

We did do a bit of a flip flop on the mouthpiece. Back when we were
talking with you our manufacturer had mistakenly quoted us the price
that was with made without food-grade silicon. Once we corrected that
mistake the price was much much higher, like 100 times higher. So we
started playing with the idea of charging for it instead of including
it. That way we would not have to add more to the cost of the
Grasshopper. I am not convinced everyone even wants one. Matt and myself
personally never even use it.

As you know the margins on the device are low, and our main goal is to bring a truly
great product to market at a reasonable price. We have already sold
lots of units at the low-price so there is no longer a chance to build
in the cost of the mouthpiece. It is either we pay for everyone to get
one or each person pays to get one.

We conducted a trial on the first few Holiday backers to see if people
were willing to pay an extra $5 for the mouthpiece and each of those
recipients were very happy to. We subsequently refunded them after the
trial.

That said we understand that we did state, in private emails and to you,
that it would be included. We will honer those words and ship every
indiegogo order and Pre-order with the mouthpiece for free. To help
offset the cost we will be listing it as an available accessory on the
website. If people are feeling generous they can purchase instead of
getting it for free.

Further by including the mouthpiece now we will be able to gauge its
usefulness to the community and decide whether it is worth including in
the future. For now it is included and if that changes we will make a
statement regarding it.

Best,
Trevor

Lol your probably correct. It did take 2 years and many revisions so chances they have a wire in the airpath are 0.

Sounds great, but again i can see the cost bothering them, they shouldn't have to pay it based on the fact that many times before they assured us that the tip on the unit wouldnt get hot due to their proprietary nasa type insulation but since people who are testing the pen in real world tests show that is the case. especially if you want to pass it around.

So im glad to hear the units will be coming with it. As a friendly guesture we should at least give them back the cost which shouldnt be more than $1 not $5

Baltik,

Has the off gassing stopped after more dry runs? Have you tried it with herb yet?

I hope this off gassing isn't too bad...now you've got me worried after so much great news.

I bet if they sold them as a 4-pack for $10, they would get a lot of buyers and make a decent profit. When passing around, there's extra heat, but also germs! :)

And I think quite a few people would consider these silicone tips semi-disposable.

Even though it's all speculation, if there is a wire in the air intake (which I'm guessing is also the LED window), I bet you its a wire for the LEDS. I mean, the heater and microprocessors may work without wires, but I wouldnt be too surprised if LEDs weren't considered when initially pitching the design, and they would be a lot harder to power without wires.

Again, this is pointless speculation, I hope it's a mistake and it's not a wire, just a stray usps delivery man pube:D

I've been a glass half full guy through all of this, but visible off gassing? That's pretty concerning...

Ya know, I would expect a little bit through a cycle or two. That IS kind of typical, but a large cloud followed by smaller clouds through 15 full power cycles, to me, is more than just a bit concerning.

For me, especially being my age and my concern for my future health, I wouldn't vape out of anything that was either off-gassing or had any smell other than the smell of the bud that I was vaping.

Grasshopper was waiting for me when I got home, stainless case was not in the package - will have to follow up with trevor on that.

First impression - feels nice and substantial, well machined although i can already some slight imperfections from the factory. Buzz alluded to the fact that the finish was not all that durable and his was fairly scratched up after some moderate use. Jury is still out but I can definitely see that being the case.

I popped in the battery and did a dry hit at the half way mark - I could taste that new vape electronic flavor immediately. I went ahead and turned the heat all the way up and gently blew through the air intake holes (where the led lights are) sure enough a decent sized cloud emerged. Not wanting to subject my lungs to that I am currently doing burn ins. I've cycled it about 15 times already and while the cloud is much less visible it's still there... To be honest i think this is fairly typical of new vapes I've certainly experienced it with my Davince Ascent and N02, so I am not TOO concerned but more of a heads up to future users not to immediately load it up and start going to town..

will keep everyone posted
What?!? No ss case?

Actually food grade heat resistant silicone is pretty durable. I have kitchen tools and mixing bowls made of this. so most likely you could run them through the dishwasher to clean them.

I like the 4-pack idea (or at least 3 pack for $10). Edit: just found a link to silicone mini bowls made from this stuff...4 for $9.99. But Trevor is not making these at the same scale so the GH tips should cost a little more.

Has anyone considered that his offgassing is the continued effect of blowing breath directly into the heated airpath? And i really refuse to believe there's any wires in the airpath til i see a picture, these guys wouldn't have been that careless after all this engineering on it.

That could get things wet (resulting in water vapor). I've had Smokebuddies clog up on me from moisture.

We need pics, of these wires. Also if it's short and too hot, it sounds like this could be an opportunity to make the mouthpiece longer with more cooling power, which could even be a retro-upgrade for og models

I'd just like to remind everyone that the Grasshopper guys state NOT to blow into the mouthpiece. @baltik said he blew through the air intake area. Huge difference - no hot, humid lung-air being forced through the heater.

Forgive me if i'm wrong but where do you think the air from the 'air intake' goes? It passes through the heater. If he's blowing his breath through the air intake, moist air is going thru the heater which is then passed through the chamber, which is empty in his case.

I really like the idea of a silicon mouthpiece multipack. I tend to roll on the more social side with my hobby, so I pass vapes around quite a bit. Way less (potential) gross.
