Awesome, congrats!

@momofthegoons I had never heard about the group till someone from here invited me (can't recall who, but thanks again whoever your are :). To be fair is never searched for it before, either, and it's hard to search what you've never thought of searching for. Does that make sense? Cause it sorta doesn't from my seat... It's been a long, but great, day!
My problem is that now that I'm a member, I can't see what the banner looked like to someone who hasn't joined the group, lol. Again, @spk2629 if you need an invite, I'll be happy to do it.

And great news on your batch! I was a little concerned myself about the decarb time, but it seemed like it was already a done deal so I wasn't going to be Debbie Downer and tell you it was already doomed if it wasn't a for sure thing. As I've said before, I've yet to have (what I would call) a truly successful batch of edible oil or butter so I'm learning along with you. Now salve and topicals are another story and I've had wonderful success with those.

Hmmmm. I would be concerned with the possibility of over-decarbing (thus reducing potency) by following that plan. You'll be doing a total of 1.5 hours at 220 (half hour in the oven followed by another full hour in the MBM).

OTOH, perhaps the timing isn't as critical as all that, and you'll be fine? But I've been led to believe that time vs temp is pretty important - longer at lower temps, shorter at higher. I've seen decarb graphs and tables floating around the net, and even posted in this thread.

The longer extraction cycle (at 160) sounds like it would ensure complete extraction, and for that, "too long" can't hurt, within reason.

You know what? That makes sense to me. I hadn't even considered that I was running at 220 for a total of two hours---1 in decarb in my oven, followed by 220 at the Oil MBM setting (per the fb group recommendations above quote) then 4 hrs in the MBM at 160. It may have done something to the overall availability of the herb... Anyone have any opinions or links.

I took pics of the whole process for posterity. I awoke to a beautiful Pyrex full of light green goodness that is a great addition to my morning coffee. I will post the pics later---heading out to work now. Have a mellow morning.

Okay so I am noob in terms of how to use the site's ability to let me upload my pics from the process I ran last night.

Not seeing a way to do it except through approved urls.

Oh well, I want to learn how the PG/VG mix with meds with MBM glycerin would be--- Like a lot of things there are many different and even contradictory to each other. So if someone out there has a PG/VG recipe where the VG is MBM'ed with herbs, can you steer me in the right direction?

I will be keeping what you guys had said about that 1 hr @ 220 degree run at first in the MBM, and the oven 220 degrees for 35 minutes decarb that I did-----Should've picked up on that lol, it's all a learning process and these forums have a lot to teach me. I just knew I needed to decarb if I wanted to get it to work

If anyone can explain how to upload pics from my PC to this thread, let me know and I will put mine up from yesterday.

Hi everyone

I have been reading this thread avidly but this is my first post. I have made some edibles in the past and have researched Decarbing extensively. From what I understand from test/lab reports, you are all under Decarbing, which I don't understand why. In the oven, I understand that you are worried about temperature spikes that could damage your hard earned meds. But if the MB keeps a constant temp, then theoretically you need 220f for 2 hours To fully Decarb. In fact, if u bump that to 4 hours at 220f, you only lose 10% THC and no CBD loss at all. In contrast, if you use 220f for 1 hour, you only get 15% of the total CBD and 68% of the THC converted. If you reduce to anything below 220f, no Decarbing at all will take place, or be so slow that it doesn't matter. So, from what I understand, over cooking is much better than under especially if your buds are fresh.
I can't speak to oven Decarbing because there is such a large range of ovens and their foibles.

Another useful tip; eat a big, greasy meal before eating edibles. Your body absorbs more fat if you eat a lot of it. So have some bacon and eggs with your edibles and enjoy! I like to take a large dose of fish oil at the same time (4g) because I figure if my body is about to absorb a lot of oil, it should get some healthy oil too.

My MB machine is due to arrive next week so I am looking forward to comparing it to my old "pain in the ass" procedure. I usually make Coconut Oil + lecithin Caps because I hate the taste of edibles. I plan on making some more when the MB arrives.

Thanks a lot to everyone that has contributed to this thread! It's nice to see people care about each other.

Then again, I've heard 240F for 60 mins. According to this article 30 minutes results in incomplete (60%) decarboxylated trim.

+1 on the under decarb Lotus.

Anyone part of the private magical butter users group on FB?

Any insight as to how to extract better via the decarb process in the MB machine?

Just got my unit and want to make some Coconut oil but can't decarb in the oven unless there is no smell? I'm a noob

You need to go get some oven cooking bags. smell proof-ish, definitely worth the $4 investment for a box of 5 at your local grocery store or Big Box Super Store

There are a couple of us here that are part of that group. And the information you read above is the best we've got going so far (here). Now, you could join the group and maybe someone there will have more information. I've posted what I've been able to find there so far, including the decarb charts and info they have.

Decarbing in the machine gives off much less smell than in the oven.

Another good read

http://www.wakeandbakecookbook.com/cannabis-infused-coconut-oil/

Think I'm gonna decarb in the oven 240 for 40-60 mins then hit the magical butter machine.

Most places I see are using 1/2 ounce per cup of oil instead of the full ounce per cup?

Think I may try Mr Naturals recipe as well and use the same quality/strain but decarb in the machine and then see which one was more potent

Ha ha yeah that 2nd link is the one I've posted twice (above and previous page) - both times ignored. It seems it's taken a few attempts before being noticed.

Obviously, there is a lot of variance in recommended decarb temps and duraton. At least there is some science / rationale on the marijuanagrowershq page.

I think I'm sold on this method to decarb since I have everything I need to do it already. I can quit dicking around, and go with his water immersion method to decarb. Food-Saver, who'd have thunk it? The 100% smell-free way to decarb :)

Interesting. I see that the THC is 100% converted after 1 hour 40 mins, but the CBD content has gone from 0.05% to 0.00%.

I'm curious how this could be approximated minus the foodsaver bags and that circulator heater thing. How about the mj in a the sealed jar sitting on a trivet or cloth in a pot of near boiling water (a la double-boiler)? Or in a ziplock with the knife ballast in a pot of near boiling water? I suppose a candy thermometer would help?

Thanks for sharing this quality informative video.

Gotta grab one of those Anova heaters and no smell with the food saver!

Edit - just ordered the Anova - $50 off with Father's Day discount code from website

It didn't appear that the mj changed color much. I would think that a good thing. Maybe it keeps more I-don't-know-what-alls. Do you think it matters whether you grind it? If you sucked out all the air in a bag o' buds and immersed it, I can't imagine pockets of lower temp impeding decarb.

I don't see why I couldn't seal my medicine in the bags and then suspend them in my convection oven for a smell free decarb without having to purchase the Anova.

Notes on Decarb Method, Temp, and Duration

I won't bother collecting quotes from previous messages, but I'm addressing the recent discussion in this thread about differences of opinion on decarb times and temps. Hopefully what I write will make sense.

Anyhow, being a chemical reaction, one would think there would be little room for discussion on the matter, as there would be some ideal combination of time and temperature, and that would be that.

In reality, it isn't quite so simple. While there is indeed a relatively small sweet spot (or perhaps line?) in the graph, there are additional complications. And this is where we get such wide variations in the recommended time for any given temperature.

The common variables that are usually charted and most of us are familiar with are time and temperature. As temperature increases, time decreases. Personally, I like the 212-220 degree range. Why? Because any cooler than that and the times involved become impractically long. Go much higher and the times become much shorter, which means timing becomes far more critical. Also, if you have no other means of precisely controlling temperature, you can use boiling water to maintain a pretty constant 212 degrees. Or, for us MBM owners, the machine has a convenient 220 degree setting. That makes 212 or 220 degrees popular and convenient temperatures.

It would seem that now, having chosen a temperature, it should be a simple matter to consult a graph or table to determine the time needed. Or not. Enter the third, and often overlooked, variable: Method.

Your product needs to be held at a particular temperature for a certain period of time, which is not exactly the same as placing it in an environment of a particular temperature for that length of time. It can be loosely compared to something the all of us on this forum are familiar with - vaporizing. Different methods - conduction vs convection, for example - behave differently. This could be likened to immersion vs oven decarb.

Decarbing in oil allows the organic material to be quickly, evenly and thoroughly heated. Especially in the MBM, where the material is effectively pulverized, maximizing saturation and contact with the oil, ensuring complete and consistent heating.

With oven decarb, OTOH, you are dealing with placing whole material, in air, inside of some sort of container, in a box of hot air. The transfer of heat, through the air, through the container, and through even more air, and then throughout the biomass, is a slower, less efficient process. Given the same temperature, it will take longer, or given the same time, will require a higher temperature, compared to immersion decarbing.

Let's use cooking as an example to further demonstrate. It takes longer to bake a whole potato in the oven the oven than it does to cook French fries (chips) in oil - for exactly the same reason - conduction vs convection. So wrapping buds in foil or (slower yet) in a glass jar or baking dish in the oven will take longer to decarb than pulverized weed soaked in hot oil.

That's why my 220 for an hour in the MBM works just as well as someone else's 230 for an hour-and-a-half in the oven.

TL;DR? Different methods of decarboxylation work at different times and temperatures. Figure out what works best for you and go with it!

Excellent points I was just getting ready to check this to see what's been added since I last posted above. I think I will try the extra hour at 220 in the MBM and let it do its magic

Just got the Anova.

Nice culinary tool for the kitchen hehe!

Will try the video above with aforementioned times for decarbing and will try the MB2 after for a 4 hr cook for oil.
..................................................................
Which Anova, the square face controls or round face?

I'm wanting one, more for cooking as not enough mj for decarbing.

Round face - I didn't see a link to the square.

Great deal in their website right now. Bluetooth / iOS app.

I purchased it mainly for cooking as well, just fantastic to be able to decarb without smell.

Anyone know the standard dose for grams of buds per ounce of ever clear for a tincture?

I've been reading 1-2 grams per fluid oz?

Alright, so I've medicated with my cannaoil about 4 times now and have drank the oil raw. At first, it tasted awful, but was doable. But just like AVB firecrackers, the taste becomes more and more unbearable after a few sessions. I don't use my capsules anymore because I'd have to take like 20+ (I use 3tbsp per session).

Anyone have any ideas on what I can eat my oil with to make it more tolerable? I tried nutella/bread and poured 3/4 of a tablespoon on it, tasted pretty bad but was doable. I'd have to eat like 4 slices of bread in order to reach a proper dose and that seems like too much.

Any ideas? Or are there any simple delicacies I can make? I'd bake something, but don't feel like wasting an hour plus. I'm open to recipes that'll take less than 20 minutes of preparation.

Edit: just drank 2 tbsp's, gagged so bad almost vomited. I need another tbsp to complete my dose but doesn't look like I'll be able to do it without vomiting. Gonna wait 45min to see if it makes it any easier :/

Any1 else feel edibles/oil/butter faster when eaten with food? I've notice my oil take effect within 15 min when I've sprinkled it on bread as opposed to 2-4 hours+ when taken alone.
