Thanks for the continued support everyone! I feel so lucky to have found this community! :D

Four little Okins waiting for mouthpieces and inlays.

Each of these stems is slightly different with their own character, I really like that.

nothing wrong with a little crowdfounding for the Okin, i guess. i've got a little performance related question. how does the okin cope with wind. i am not talking hurricanes here, but i intend to use it outside a lot and there is almost always a light breeze present in open areas.

p.s.: you shouldn't have mentioned you had ideas for a desktop unit. :)

Wind is completely fine, though it does make the charcoals burn a bit faster sometimes, which is why I suggest preparing the charcoals, if you expect it to be windy, you can poke less, or no holes i to the sides to compensate. I've used it in very windy conditions, like, stormy winds, without problems. It will also work fine in the winter.

I will be waiting for the testers to post their opinions here before announcing pre-orders, obvectivety is important I think. I have pretty much developed this in private, and like i said, my background is in smoking pipes, so... who knows how it will compare to the competition! All that I know is that I love using it, and it's a very different experience from anything else I have tried.

this vaporizer has my full attention, instead of the grasshopper.

Word, mine too, rather than the Evoke. Funding that campaign was a lesson well learned. I know people aren't too happy waiting on the grasshopper either.

What initially drew me to the Evoke was the wood component, and how they were going for a classic/luxury wooden-pipe feel.. The Okin has all of that going for it aesthetically. And it's done right.

Anyway, as soon as pre-orders are available, I'm in on this too. Really love the concept, design and how you're running everything, Dan.

The Okin's form factor is really cool, if this type of vaporizer works out, I can see the heating mechanism put to good use in other designs, for example, I think a "Sherlock" shaped pipe would be really cool type of Okin and maybe other shapes/designs as well, all using the exact same charcoal...not trying to get ahead of ouselves, I know I'm just dreaming, but the Okin really sparks the imagination.

so, a charcoal is a single bowl, yeah? where do replacements come from, and how much are they?

I am shooting for $25 for 500 pieces.

Though, I am really going to encourage people to make their own if they can. The DIY'ers will enjoy this process I think. It's relatively easy to do over a camp fire. But it does involve going to the garden center, buying bamboo.. sorting it for size, and cutting into segments (with a small handsaw, I will make some recommendations for appropriate cheap saws that are widely available). The process isn't really for everyone, but most garden stores sell 6ft bamboo for fairly cheap, it may only cost you like $5 for 500 pieces. Or less if you live closer to the bamboo trade centers, or in a state that grows bamboo.

I have visions of this all the time, haha. It would be an awesome way to enjoy pipe tobaccos. Imagine a sherlock style wooden pipe, with a 6 shooter arrangement of bowls instead of just a single bowl chamber. And a rotating steel bowl rim that holds the charcoals. So as the charcoal burns down, you can turn the wheel to advance the heat to the next loaded chamber... and repeat. It'd be a neat way to increase the session time. You would pack very small chamber loads, for maximum flavor in each draw, and more even vaporization without shaking or stirring.

Yep, gotta do that at some point... haha.
