Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

Just a little test I did last night. Used some high quality milk paint on my box. Turned out pretty cool! I like the texture, it's almost like stone. The paint is extremely matte, but I'll make another update later after I give it a coating of linseed oil and wax, curious to know if I like the unfinished or finished paint more.

I'm also going to be adding my stamp to the corner.

Not sure if this will have any impact on the final Okin boxes, but I thought I would share anyhow. If anyone especially likes this look over the plain kraft paper look, I would gladly paint their box.

Here are the colour choices I could use, http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=65208&cat=1,190,42942

Well, with the linseed oil/wax it looks a bit darker.. the colour is a bit deeper.. it's a bit less matte as well.. It's a toss up really.

Anyhow, some shots from the shop today. I'd like to start posting more updates here, now that things are picking up.

All Looks great, I like the look of the box very much.

Are these production versions you're now making or are these for testers?

These are production models, that I will be sending out to the testers, but, I just can't imagine making any changes to the design at this point. It's about as good as it's going to get, any revisions would probably be saved for my next vaporizer in the distant future, if such a thing even happens (i have some thoughts for a desktop in a couple years perhaps, just visions at this point).

The testers will be there to give me and those on the wait list an objective opinion before I ask them to pre-order. This just feels like a good idea, peace of mind for all!

About the pre-order. I have been going back and forth whether or not to do some sort of small crowd funding so that I can make a huge order of bamboo, raw materials, and some extra tooling. Things could go a lot faster... rather than slowly moving in small batches while ramping up production. In the end, a bit of seed money could allow me to get much larger batches made so that everyone recieves their Okins much sooner. I could order raw materials for 200 units, instead of for 50.. and bamboo for the year, in a container ship (which would really save me a lot of money in the long run, and allow for a cheaper price on the charcoals)

Thoughts on this? At first I really wanted to avoid this, because I like keeping things simple, but it has since occured to me that if the demand is there, which it seems to be, it would be silly not to...

Either way I'm going full steam ahead, no matter the amount of water in my boiler.

@stickstones , Agreed!

I absolutely love the look of the painted box!

If you go for crowdfunding, you can at least reassure backers that development is complete and you are seeking funds to create inventory. That makes a huge difference IMO. If your goal is modest, I don't see why it wouldn't be a good way to proceed.

Pictures of boxes and clips... you're not trying to compete with the Grasshopper guys are you?

That paint is really nice for hue and some texture. I also like the natural color of the box pre-painted, so my question is does the milk paint provide any additional benefit like protection from wear and tear or more durability?

That would be my intention, 100%.

My goal would be about 60 pre-orders at a 15% discount in price ($119 usd). I wouldn't be doing any extra incentives, just pure pre-orders of the Okin.

And HAHA, I was thinking the exact same thing while taking the pictures of those clips... thinking in the back of my head.. oh no, someone is going to tell me that these teasers look familiar.

The milk paint will provide a bit of extra protection, it's very durable paint, even modern paint strippers don't work on it. But it really shouldn't matter too much, both painted and un-painted will stand up to abuse.
