Restrictive Draw & Throat/Lung Irritation

Noticed the other evening while vaping, and being too lazy to clean screens during that session, that the vapor was much more harsh than normal. (This was on a revape of material I low-temp vaped earlier that day, so session was higher temp and not using fresh herb.).

Thought I was imagining things, so I did a little experimenting and found that vaping the same material through a clean screen with far less restriction, that the harshness was barely noticeable. I used the same temperature and strains as my usual sessions. At least for me, the more restrictive the draw, the more harsh the vapor seemed.

Note, the draws were pulled from the diaphragm, not mouth draws that are breathed in after (like one would drag on a cigarette taking the draw into the mouth first, then inhaling). Mouth draws did not have this effect, so kind of concluding the negative pressure in lungs and windpipe during a deep draw/inhale contributed to the discomfort.

Maybe this will help someone who has trouble with the harshness of vapor... that by switching to a vaporizer with a less restrictive draw, they may gain a much more pleasant vaping experience.

Anyone else notice similar?

I'm an older guy and My doctor has advised me to stop vaping Immediately- the reason - over dry lungs. I trust My doc - he is a very smart guy and knows allot about how vapor effects lung tissue. I've had yet another lung infection this year and my doc says that vaping is the cause. Vapor is harsh on lung tissue but it also really drys them out killing all of the beneficial bacteria and other things making it really easy for bad bacteria to take over. He told me smoking does not do this as much as vapor and since I've been not vaping and smoking again my lungs feel much better and no lung infections for months. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on and have found tons of evidence that over time vaping can cause permanent damage to your lung tissue due to an over drying which can cause intense and abnormal stress on the lung tissue itself. Leaving the tissue weak and vulnerable to infection and or disease.

Sorry to call BS but.....BS!!!!

So smoking and inhaling 100's of known carcinogens is better than vaping?? Smoking is about 90% combustion by-products (nasty shit) and 10 % the goodness. Vaping is about 90% the goodness and 10% misc .
Vaping dries your lungs for about 10 seconds and then they naturally re-hydrate when you breath in normal humid air. Minimal, temporary drying vs nasty nasty combustion chemicals that are HOT and DRY.

Plus, I often vape thru water bubbler which humidifies the vapor. I also vape thru hot water which humidifies the vapor even more----it has more moisture than the air you breathe and actually feels good on the lungs.

On the plus/minus 10 point lung scale I'd rate smoking bud a minus 10, vaping with a quality piece about a minus 1, vaping thru a room temp bubbler a plus 3, and vaping thru hot water a plus 6 as it feels very good on the lungs.

I think your doc is way off base on this issue...IMO, based on my research

All I know is from my own experience. I'm not a scientist but I know I felt much better health wise after I stopped smoking cannabis. I can breathe better, no pre smoker's cough. I caught colds more often when I smoked cannabis and I was never a tobacco smoker.

I looked online and read a lot about the vapors e juice causing possible problems.

I can't imagine a doctor advising smoking cannabis over vaporizing. The doctor would advise no cannabis at all. A lot of doctors are prejudice against the evil weed period. I will take you at your word @ButterMan. May you live to be a healthy 100 years.

I wonder about your doctor's advice. Does he really know what he's talking about far as vaporizing cannabis is concerned?

people get excited about carcinogens and getting cancer as they should but...seem to forget you can also get COPD that may have nothing to do with carcinogens and more to do with plugging things up .

either one will kill you just as good. and dying from suffication from copd, im sure is jsut as nasty as dying from cancer.

i have definently noticed the drying out of my lungs from vaping. and it might not have to do with just the dry air but more to do with just the drying effects of cannabis . i use water tools and sometimes vap through cotten .

i often wonder if i would be better of smoking .
for me espicaly since im a drywaller and the dust that i breath in on a daily bases is extreame .
i honestly sometimes feel that using the vape after breathing dust all day is just drying out the dywall dust and cementing it in there, i can feel it. were as the tar from smoking helps to give me something to help hack it out with.

my grand mother chain smoked cigs from the time she was 20 till she was 90. it was the smoking that finaly did it .but she was very healthy right up to the end. no oxygen tank .

so dont forget that drying out your lungs either from dry vapor or just the drying effects of cannabis ( the pasties as we all know ) could in the end save you from the
carcinogens but still sufficate you ...remains to be seen for sure

from personal experience, or research papers/studies, or what other source? his advise certainly is counter to my experience - vaping without a water tool for 15 years ... i'm 67, do aerobics 5 to 6 days a week and eat real food, mostly plants, and not too much (Pollan's food rules).

I'm having a real hard time seeing toxic tar in the lungs as beneficial. Or how adding the particular matter from combustion of any sort is preferable. If you have some sort of issue with vaping due to lung health issues - there's edibles, capsules, topicals, suppositories, extracts and concoctions of every flavor that have nothing to do with using the lungs to bring the medication into the system. Health-wise on any front, smoking it should be an option somewhere below shoving raw flowers under your eyelids.

I'm 71 years old. I vape almost every single night. I vape through warm water. I also run 20 miles a week. Haven't even had a head cold let alone any other kind of infection for over 10 years.

Of course, in the whole scheme of things, my anecdotal evidence holds as much water as what @chris 71 's grandmothers experience described above which is diddly squat.

But.......logic would dictate that any doctor who states that smoke is healthier for your lungs than vapor should have his medical license revoked.

.

Okay, it's obvious that vaping is much healthier than smoking, but there has not been enough studies on the long term health effects of vaporizing (if any). It would be interesting to know how long term heavy vaping effects ones health.

@iwien as I recall you're more like a 2 gram a month guy. I wouldn't expect any negative health outcome from such little use. How about a 2 gram a day medical vaporist? They probably don't have an increased cancer risk, but the risk of COPD over the course of 30 years? IDK... We can only use vaporizers as a risk reduction device as the long term effects of vaporizing cannabis on respiratory function are still unknown!

Actually, I only vape 1 gram a month but yeah, totally agree that we need to see some long term testing.
I think it goes without saying that vaporizing does carry a certain amount of risk but what floored me was a doctor suggesting that smoking was a better alternative. :mental:

Yeah, I agree... The typical general doctor response would be to reccomend that the patient cease using cannabis completely regardless of delivery source...and to suggest that smoking is healthier than vaporizing is simply idiotic!

Btw, sorry for doubling your useage amount. I didn't mean to raise your tolerance hahaha

i'm doing my best ... actually, though, i was reading an article about the crap in wax/shatter/bho, etc., and the mention of "cuticle wax" being part of the extract, but also appearing in vapor. (!) i need to study this a bit more ...

I'm old and in pain most of the time so vaping once a day would not cut it for me I must vape allot to alleviate pain and doing this - for me - is taking a toll on my old lungs by chronically drying them out. Im thinking of how dry my ABV is and how dry my lungs feel after a long day of vaping and what my doc is saying makes sense to me. So -for me- going back to smoking has worked to stop the lung infections and breathing problems at night. didn't mean to cause a ruckus just thought my situation pertained to what @DDave had mentioned. Cheers folks!

Yes Dave, I have also noticed this. I am using an Herbalaire with the Glass on Glass crucible from Planet vape and I put 2 screens inside. The second one has very fine holes, and it's clogging easily, but I prefer that because the vapor in more 'pure' of plant residues. And when the screens are clogged, it works but the vapor became harsh.... I think it's something important to consider because 90% of our vapes has screens.... We just have to clean our screens often.....

One a side note, how can a doctor advise someone to smoke?!!!!

My health is now 100000% better since I have stopped to smoke....... I am vaping since 5 years now and I never feel better! Even if I know that vaping is not 100% safe.

Anecdotally (and btw, over the years I have learned to trust anecdotal evidence as much as if not more--depending on the situation I guess--than big pharma evidence, i.e., "what your dr. tells you"), I have not used my lung mister thingy since I started vaping a little over a month ago. I went years without needing it much (usually only when I was exposed to excessive cat stuff and excessive smoke stuff) since I went years without using weed. When I came back to the pleasant greenery, I came back naively, having not thought or talked about usage in over 20 yrs. So of course I went back to what I knew: the pipe and the fire. And with increased usage of even only low amounts my lung mister started to be called upon. For me, a relatlvely low usage person, no comparison. My lungs are healthier and happier. Albeit anecdotally.

I find that a clean vaporizing path tastes best and I would imagine better for your body, lungs included. Some folks do well using edibles as well as vaporizing, so less wear and tear and the lungs and throat. I have some lemonade mix that has cannabis oil infused in it. I haven't tried it out yet.

m thinking of how dry my ABV is and how dry my lungs feel after a long day of vaping

Using that analogy of comparing how dry your ABV is in relationship to how dry your lungs feel, look at the black ash that's left over in your pipe and compare THAT to what is happening in your lungs.

So -for me- going back to smoking has worked to stop the lung infections and breathing problems at night.

I'm curious. What vaporizer were you using?

I doubt that very much

Why? Your liver has to process that THC. I would think that there is also a certain amount of risk associated with that, just as there are risks inhaling vapor.

How much of a risk that one is willing to take for the reward is a very personal choice. For me.........the risks are small enough that I am willing to take them for the rewards. For others though, those risks may be to great. As an example, if I had liver issues, I would stay away from edibles. If I had lung issues, I would embrace edibles.
