Bong v. Vape | The routine and the burn

That topic of vaporisers came up with a few friends and we got talking.

I'm a big advocate for vaporisers, so we get talking about the pros and cons of each type of administration and an interesting point came up.

Everyone loves smoking cones, but it was more than that, people love smoking bongs, more specifically people love smoking out of bongs. At first I was a little confused why people are hesitant to switch to all-vape and in hindsight maybe a little obvious.

We have all been smoking for a fair while, but I don't really smoke that much, when I hit the bong, I don't really milk it as I hate the burn so just take smaller hits to finish the cone.

But for others, that burn is the first sign that they are about to get high, so for years and years, that feeling of discomfort, like the first time, about to cough a lung out, now routine, almost benign. Just like it took some time to appreciate the bitterness of beer, it's not that it is any less bitter, but the taste of the bitterness is now understood to be a good thing, and in a few moments the joy of alcohol will wash over.

Grind
Pack
Spark
Burn

This routine is interrupted using a vape. Those who smoke out of bongs, and more so when spun, being a healthier/more efficient way of getting high is not the entire point, it is the routine of getting high, of getting home from a long day, throwing a some nugs and tobacco into the coffee grinder and punching down a cone. Old habits die hard.

At the moment at least here in Australia, using vapes is more a novelty than a serious way of getting high, at least in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Aussie bong smoking culture is terrible.

People smoke entire bowls to themselves (smaller conepieces than typical American slides) through aluminium/brass/plastic/glass/rubber pipes which almost never get cleaned. The cone is packed generally with flowers mixed with tobacco (often slightly more tobacco than flowers too!) and then combusted through what seems like as many unsafe/bad tasting materials as you can find to make a bong out of.

I have actually kicked my old smoking habit again, back to vaping now instead of smoking my trademark joints. Hoping it stays this way. I hope my country's cannabis culture matures and moves away from unsafe materials and practice with the 'erb. There's such flavour to be enjoyed, and such a better high!

Gotta say though, it is true that so many aussie's are steeped in this bong smoking habit!

Hi Guys

Not many people can get their heads around vapes I mentioned it to a couple of doctors recently and they just cant get their heads around it. Every one seems to think combustion is the only way cannabis is consumed.
Its been a while since I hit a cone. To be honest it was most unpleasant, I'm not sure why we put up with it for so long. As for sharing bowls that is one thing I don't get. Every one gets a freshie, sharing would be like going slops. Yeah I remember those disgusting old orchy bongs and the thrill of finding a neighbours new hose which signalled time for new bong.
From what I have seen over the years, there is not much culture its more the six oclock swill mentality. A quick chop to make the mix and keep punching till its all gone. I suppose it comes from being an illegal activity where one must not linger for fear of being caught in the act. Having said that it appears some parts of society, attitudes are changing so there is hope. Although I recently saw a segment on daytime tv where a local celebrity was questioned whether they used recreational drugs and the answered no and a couple of questions later gave a detailed breakdown of their weekly alcohol consumption WTF
Wow that turned into a bit of a rant. Time to hit the solo.

I don't get the massive American bowls thing... Seems stupid and wasteful to me.
If you're gonna smoke, I don't see how anything other than packing a small cone you can punch in 1 go is a smart way to go...

Why would you want to let a half smoked bowl sit there an smolder?
Why would you want to light up a half smoked bowl of charred bud/ash?

And don't even get me started on powerade bongs...
Why the f- are they so damn popular?

I get it if you're a kid and need to knock up something quick and nasty, but I have friends (who have now been consuming mj for 10 years or so) who still rekkon they are the best bong there is...

And for the love of god why won't anyone change their water?
I'm talking weeks of daily use... Seriously, I don't understand why it's such a massive hassle to change water once a day...

The resistance to change some people have really annoys me sometimes...
I get that to a certain extent there is a ritual, and people like their particular ritual, but I'm talking just substituting their cheap nasty dirty plastic bong with a nice glass one to start...

That's not change, it's improvement...

Edit:
When I started typing this I hadn't intended to produce a screed, but I guess that just happened ;)

Show them a video of some vapour-bonging and see what they think of it.

The ritual is similar, just without the fire. Pack a bowl, plug in the vape, rip it till you cough up a lung.

It's an idea at least. I haven't converted everyone, but I have converted quite a few to the vapour bong.

If they have an issue with it, it's generally that it's too smooth for them (the excuse of hardcore combustion people generally, lol).

Powerade bong... I had to look that one up and it's what I expected- horrible. People are stuck in their habits and sometime it is impossible to get them to change.

Can't remember ever using a bong. It's never really been part of UK culture. Well not here anyway.

If people smoke it pure it's in a pure joint or a dry/glass pipe.

Through my E-nano I get huge milky hits with all of my bongs and as you can see in my video on the e nano thread. You can pretty much cash a bong snaps amount of weed ,and get a much bigger hit that also tastes the way your dank smells ...who wouldn't want that?

I recall reading somewhere here on FC about the tar from smoke preventing the vapor from being 100% absorbed by the lungs. Lots of people must've given up in the early stages of vaping, just before it gets better.

I've converted 2 friends of mine using the vapolution 2.0-bong setup. One friend also claimed the setup took too long and would rather hit something quicker. Routines die hard.

get a desktop log vape. I read an analogy somewhere that really stuck with me. A portable vape is typically like smoking a small bowl whereas log vapes are like hitting a bong.

Look at the underdog and e-nano, a couple of others out there too but I believe these are the two most popular. Logs let you use really, really small amounts, "microsized" hits as people like to call them in a few seconds that whitewall most bongs or bubblers.

I like my portables but sometimes I don't have 10 minutes to sip on my air. The log vape really fills this purpose.

It's because a lot of people only have experience with bad or old vaporizers, and probably didn't even hit them right. Everybody I know that says they don't like them has never used a Heat Island, Cloud Evo, etc.

My favorite line is "yeah vapes just don't affect me"
I have had many people tell me this. One hit off my Sublimator usually fixes that right up nicely. I like to put it towards max usable settings and just tell them to keep hitting it until they cant inhale anymore. Never fails to leave even heavy bong smokers begging for some oxygen from coughing so much and usually only another hit or 2 to get them blasted.

I specifically enjoy converting smokers to the vapor side.

Aussie's just don't know how to get high lol. Tobacco in my weed? No thanks lol. I almost exclusively vape through water. It can be just as fun.

Makes me feel like a superior stoner to be honest :D haha.

I mean who the hell doesn't want to get high, with less bud, while not fucking your lungs up? I guess most Aussies lol...

Since you've opened this topic again I'll say some people can't be bothered spending $40 on a glass bong let alone $600 on a high end vaporizer. These people just don't give a fuck & are happy to use a beer can plastic iced coffee bottle whatever. It's hard to convert people like that & why even bother. I don't think they'd know the difference between smoke & vapor or care, & even if they did enjoy themselves they'd probably fire up a cigarette in your lounge room straight after. Anyway if they know your scene they'll ask when they're ready.

You've seriously just described every aussie stoner I've met that wasn't from FC...

I found this thread pretty funny. I've never met anyone who uses vaporizers but then again I don't ask. Obviously a lot of people do but the Aussie stereotype stoner has been around for years & they've always been proud of their MacGyver like bong making skills. I remember there used to be all sorts of techniques to getting the perfect sealing stem hole through a Mr Juicy or Orchy bottle. Personally I never want to smoke again. So much so I've even considered buying a generator to run my favourite plug-ins & charge portables if there's a really long power outage. It's not just the health thing I really don't enjoy smoke or its effects anymore.

No longer dogless
A) I own more bongs now than before I switched to vaping, by an order of magnitude (see my glass list below).

B) I don't know many Aussies, but here in the DC-Baltimore area, what finally got a lot of people I know to switch was when they saw how much less herb you use in a good vaporizer. Even if you spend $500 on a very good vape, if you're a serious stoner, it saves you more than that much in herb the 1st year. Got quite a few people to switch by showing them how little herb my Clouds, Solo, Air, and Pinnacle Pro need.

C) Have also found dabbing can be a route into vaping for some people.

I like my house to not be hotboxed and being able to vape and go to the store right after without everyone giving me funny looks is a plus. Same reasons I vape nicotine. I don't like to stink.

They're probably giving you funny looks anyway. They're just doing it behind your back. :brow:
