Talked to my dentist about cannabis capsules

in lieu of laughing gas. He was interested but...

I'm a medical card holder and i told the VA and my dentist that i use pot. i don't tell them that i've been smoking/eating/vaping for 45 years. they might get the wrong idea. :)

i'm a nervous dental patient and i told the dentist that when we legalize here in arizona, probably not until 2020 unfortunately, he'll find that some people would rather eat some cannabis than use the gas or use them together to mello them out. '

i told him that i was pretty sure that 2 of my canna caps would have helped mello me out better than the gas. FUCK I HATE THE DRILL SOUND! ARGHHHHHHHH!!

we talked about it for a few minutes and he explained that he was curious how it would work out but that there were steps he would have to take when using a non authorized/unusual (?) drug while under his care. i agreed to what he said he would have to do, just taking my blood pressure and pulse during the work i think. then he said that he would have to talk to the dental board people before he would try something like this.

i told him to forget it, that i didn't want him to get in trouble but that if he ever wanted to see what would happen, i'd be the guinea pig.

have any of you gotten high before the dentist? i haven't yet but maybe next time. just a little bit. i just won't tell him. i'm curious if it would make my trip for a filling a nicer experience.

Be careful what you tell the VA about your cannabis usage. I saw a story on the news about a man that was denied pain meds just because he tested positive for cannabis on a random drug test. I'm not sure how much more limiting they would be if a person tested positive, but be careful.

thanks.

i didn't tell the VA for years after being legal but every thing i've read says that as long as you tell them you are using legal medical cannabis, they will no longer do anything to you. a lot of vets went to their congress people to push the VA to mello out on the subject.

i guess they treat it differently for some when it comes to pain meds especially if they don't declare that they are users. pretending that mixing pot with some strong med would be a problem is getting old.

a VA facility run by an asshole would mess with the vets while a VA facility not run by an asshole would let it ride. my doctor just made a note of it and said it's a good thing i told her as they do check for drugs sometimes and if i didn't tell them and i came up positive, that would have been a problem.

Absolutely no problem telling the VA about your cannabis use as long as you reside in a state where medical marijuana is legal.

"The Department of Veterans Affairs will formally allow patients treated at its hospitals and clinics to use medical marijuana in states where it is legal, a policy clarification that veterans have sought for several years."

I don't disclose to anyone. Not even a hint. They don't need to know. And the fact that I'm an alien from another dimension is even more justification to keep my mouth shut!!!

Don't let them do a DNA test on you either! :p

What's kinda interesting about this is that I have a blood panel drawn about once every 10 months at the VA. I few years ago when I went in to get a reading of my overall results, the doctor said, "Oh, I see that you're a cannabis user." I was in shock. I had no idea that they were going to run a drug test, which they've never done before. Apparently, the VA doesn't need to get your prior consent to do this.

It had no affect on the care that they provide me, but it sure as hell came as a surprise. They also checked for coke and meth which came back negative which defiantly wouldn't have been the case 35 years ago.

The fact that they don't need permission is what bothers me.

Kinda like an illegal search... and unauthorized invasion of privacy.

Yeah, I felt kinda violated. On the other hand, as an organization that is providing health care, I do think that's it's important for them to know what kind of drugs one is taking, especially the coke and meth tests that they also performed. I think it may be one test that scans for all three.

i got high once before a dentist visit thinking it would relieve some anxiety, but didn't work out too well for me as I became more sensitive to the localized discomfort. Never told my dentist and still got the needles.

For me, cannabis works for general pain, but not localized for some reason. Was there to get a cavity filled and the drilling was not very deep at all. I think I got paranoid too as when I got up to leave my entire back was drenched with sweat.

YMMV though.

that's my concern. i'd take a couple capsules that at home would mello me out but in the dentist chair might give me anxiety.

the first time i did the gas, it reminded me of a light pot high. a bit different but close enough to think hmmmmmm.

i need 2 fillings replaced. i'm seriously thinking of taking 1 capsule 2 hours before the chair and not using the gas. one is not enough to get me going but might be enough to give me some mello brain waves.

i never get novoacaine with epinepherine. that stuff gets my heart beating too fast. they use a different numbing agent without the epinepherine. it sucks that it took over 40 years to figure that out.

Let your dentist use his standard numbing agents, etc., and take your canna cap afterwards in a calming celebration to the whole thing being over and done with.

:). i run home and fire up the vaporizer first thing.

you gave me an idea. even if i do eat one capsule for the chair, it takes about 2 hours before i feel it more than a little bit. i could eat a capsule or 2 an hour before i get in the chair. then by the time i'm out of the chair, i'm starting to feel the high. but then i'd need someone to pick me up. i never drive high. uber to the rescue.

i'm too old for this shit. :)

Great Scott!
The dentist is one of the few places in life I've found cannabis to be worse than sobriety. Extra dry mouth, weaker more relaxed mouth muscles to hold open, increased sensations etc. Once and only once for me. Made everything worse. Id take laughing gas over cannabis at the dentist any day. That being said they usually just give me Novocaine and nothing else, unless its a root canal etc.

I agree.. novocaine and nitrous oxide will be more than enough to calm your nerves and numb the pain.. If I was to have major dental work like extractions or root canals; I'd make sure he'd perscribe me a short course of opiates... Perhaps two days worth. In my experience if I have moderate to severe dental pain cannabis is not strong enough....

I always get medicated before I go to the dentist. I just notice I get dry mouth and smelly breath.

I was nervous to get my wisdom teeth pulled so I got backed. By the time I got the shots and gass I was so fucked up.

Same as @darkrom, it just feels horrible! All that anxiety... :uhoh:

First chance I got, I asked an Odonthology student about any previous preparation before going, he did discourage pot.
Also said drinking alcohol is a BAD idea, it can cause permanent brain damage and other horrible stuff apparently.

Doesn't alcohol encourage bleeding, too? Thins the blood or whatever? My dad is on blood thinners and can't drink, and the guy who did my tattoo also made sure I didn't drink before he did it so the ink wouldn't bleed out. I imagine it makes it harder for them to work if you're gagging on your own blood, lol.
