Open Source Glass Thread

I have a free service to offer to the Fuck Combustion community, for those who are purchasing knock off or "Open Source" Mothership glass which were designed, created, engineered and crafted by some amazing American borosilicate glass artists such as Scott Deppe, Jake Colito, Davin Titland, and Kevin McCully (Quave). Once you have gotten the chance to try your knockoff glass and realize that is functionally no better than your D020D or other generic bubbler, you can send your knockoff Othership pieces to me.

I will host some sessions with some glass artists that work at Mothership Glass. I'll film a demonstration of the functional differences between the copy cat piece and the real versions of the pieces being stolen and imitated.

In lieu of shipping the knockoff boro back to you, we will then destroy the knock off glass pieces in entertaining and safe manners. That part will be included on the comparison video as a free bonus!

Although his rant was over the line and cost him a warning point, @Frederick McGuire is correct about how we've set the limits of discussion. It's therefore inappropriate to troll the thread like this.

@Mister G Yes it is, but I am basing this prediction by comparing his past recent sales and comparing them to the reviews. I have guesstimated 10days, which would put me at about 5/4 (Monday).

So does tracking show it's out for delivery today? Just curious.... :hmm:

I have no guilt about buying DHgate knockoffs, the high end designers aren't losing a customer because I'd never pony up what they are asking, but I do admire the work and creativity.

I personally would like to see some side by side videos of the knockoff vs. the Original just to compare functionality. I think that is a great idea despite the sarcastic tone of the original post. For those of us that happen to have a China knockoff and an original post the side by side!

If there was a $50 China piece that you can tell is functionally way off from a $100 or $150 piece then it would help me make a better more informed buying decision. Of course, if a China piece gets it 90% right and is 1/10th the cost then I think you know which piece I would choose in that scenario.

I wish I had not broken my Mobius 60t a couple years ago :( I bought Steven's knockoff FC-186 which is very similar but different neck design and that thing is great! It purrs just like my Mobius did. I do like my Mobius just a hair better but not 7x the cost better.

I read the entire mothership thread and that is some beautiful glass...some beautifully expensive glass. I don't think you can compare China glass to these. When you buy that type of glass you are buying art in addition to function.

One day I am going to buy a $1000 piece that is absolutely spectacular. Will it be a recycler, incycler, bubbler, egg, or something else? I have no idea but once I find my favorite functional piece from China that works in my setup (still optimizing) and find an original artistic piece that blows my mind I'll drop the $$$. I'm still a couple years away from that kind of purchase.

What if the big name glass blowers flipped it on the Chinese makers and started offering higher quality knockoffs of the D020 and GB series? They could make them cost 25-50% more than what DH vendors charge and still be more in line with what 'regular' consumers are willing to pay and offer us a "name brand" that will steer us away from the knockoffs?

Does this street go both ways?

I'll echo what a few others have said in terms of China glass vs Mothership. There is no way I would spend $1k+ on a piece of glass having never tried hooking up a vape to a bubbler.

Now that I've played around with some cheap China glass I can see the value in water filtration and am likely to at some point buy something local. Probably still not something Mothership grade but once I get a good feel for what works for me by experimenting with $40 Chinese pieces I would feel comfortable paying more for something local that's better made.

Were it not for Chinese glass I would never risk that kind of money on nicer glass and have no good way of figuring out what works best for me.

I would love to see videos of glassblowers hitting USA/Chinese pieces blindfolded/earplugged and then forced to pick which is better. Not saying they would pick the Chinese pieces, but I just doubt they would be able to tell the difference. Kind of like the Pepsi Challenge from back in the day. Would love to see the claims about nothing hitting like an American piece falling away in the face of reality.

I guess that I am late to the discussion but would still like to weigh in.

I have hit and owned a decent amount of expensive American glass. One of my good friends is a mothership fanboy and I get to hit his egg every time I go over to his house. It is nice but it is not worth the price and I would say that my new CCG egg is AT LEAST 80% as good for about 2% the cost of his.

If you don't believe me check my IG blankrider1.

I will try to bring my egg next time and get shots of them side by side

@blankrider I'm wondering if there is any interest in a smaller thicker can version of the Dcycler. Hear me out FC;) Steven can piggyback off the already popular sales of the piece. I toss this out there mainly because of the mouthpiece design and a couple small things. It's a great piece but if you look at the original the uptake tube hits the funnel at much more of an angle than the dhgate versions. The can is shorter and the mouthpiece is just a ring/Maria at the very end so instead of putting your lips in the piece you put them on it. I know there is already someone wanting a smaller version of it iirc or maybe a small and a large version can be done. One with a 10mm and/or 14mm male and large one with a 18mm female. But with the changes I listed above. Thoughts, FC?

That is all. Back to hitting my DCycler, as is:brow:

None of my Chinese pieces sound like Pyrex or schott. Duller. They don't really ring. It's very distinct. Both Chinese pieces sound the same. My domestic pieces are pretty bell like. What's up with this. Granted only 2 pieces from dhgate. Different sizes, but sound exactly the same.

Please no :(

I HATE those mouthpieces...

(just throwing my :2c: out there - carry on folks :))

Interesting...I figured the flared out crappy mouthpiece that every Chinese piece has, it seems like, would be the least popular out there. Any suggestions on a different design then? Or do you like flared mouthpieces? I HATE them:2c:. I'm up for any different designs and it doesn't necessarily have to be like the one like in the original DCycler. I'd just like to see some different ones.

Can't say I really know what you're talking about. The reason I suggested earplugs is that I figured that differing perc sound might give away which is American and which is Chinese, but sound has no real effect on function.

Basically, lips around mouthpiece = sad Freddy Mac.
Lips inside mouthpiece = happy Freddy Mac.

IMO the möbius clear matrix has the best mouthpiece possible for a bong - and I would want it on absolutely every piece if I could...

Gotcha. I see where you are coming from. I too like the GB-187 MP which is very close to the clear's design. Not so much a flare as simply stretched out and your lips do go inside it. I like those. The ones like the FC-187 and the Dcycler are what I'm calling flared. The Dcycler is almost flat it's so flared. That is one that would qualify as not putting your lips in or on but simply against. Hard to make a seal IMO. The FC-187 is the worst MP I own. Flared too much.

Lips on = Maria's, bulb style, j hook style, snake/pecker style

Lips in = bong style, rolled edge, Möbius Clear, GB-187 style, gb-186 IIRC

Lips against = flared like Dcycler, FC -187, vapexhale dry MP

Sound about right?

I'm not talking about the functional sound. If you tap Pyrex or schott glass it will ring, very bell like.

My Chinese pieces do not have this sound if you hit them lightly. Very dull.

I do not know if this applies to all Chinese work. Or just the dhgate recycler and bubbler I have here. All my various domestic Pyrex or schott pieces sound the same.

Despite the pleasing sound, I can no longer afford to break American glass. I'm real happy with the function of the Chinese pieces here and have several more incoming.

It's a cheap thrill. One broken Möbius equals a minimum of 7 or 8 good functioning imports.

Nothing but props for domestic artists. But, I have Parkinson's and dropping things is what I do.

Thank you @Monsoon Ill be on the look out for that! Also I wish this site would let you post photos directly instead of URL well that's how it is on mobile anyway. Then I could send you all photos of my old Motherships and give you actual comparison between these models. I'll try to find more time to come on here

Just received my FC-UFO today and it looks great. I can't wait to try it out.

Where can I purchase some spare 18mm male whip tubing connectors? And maybe some better quality mouth pieces for the whip?

And that tubing that came with it tastes absolutely awful, and that's after an ISO wash followed by a soap & water wash. I'm going to see if I can locate some food-grade tubing locally. If not, Amazon to the rescue!
