Totally forgot about that movie, but I enjoyed it immensely. Time for a re-screening

How about a patina'd hammer - dimpled finish? Is that possible? Probably much more trouble than it's worth I would think ...but just throwing it out there...

I like the color contrast between the elements, wood looks like wood, metal looks like metal, brass should be apparently brass, whatever wear and tear develops from handling and heating and cooling the pipe is going to happen from use. Metal in bbq pits discolor and carbonize when used.(Why should it look rusty? Unless it been dipped in water to cool in that case you're expecting people to dip it in water to cool) I like how Dan is being very deliberate with his design elements.

That would be a sweet finish! Maybe I'll try it on some of the one-off ones!

This patina and surface texture was chosen because it's more durable than the earlier rusted patina, and it has more room to change over time and develop real patina. It also fits the target price point.

Thanks for clearing this up Dan!

Of course I didn't mean that I don't like the new look, but the first one showed was more steampunk and I liked it a little more. ;)

Hey @Dan Morrison,

This picture was posted in the Vapman thread and it looks kinda familiar.

Is this one of your creations?

Ha, and yep, that's one of mine.

I was also thinking that an opium-pipe inspired vaporizer would be a really cool desktop model. The traditional opium pipe kit had to be paired with an opium lamp. This glass lamp would channel a stream of hot air up and out of the glass 'chimney'. This hot air stream would allow for vaporization in the opium pipe bowl. The same exact theory could be applied for herb vaporization.

We could really have a whole new era of opium-esque pipes, ha.

Dan - since I plan on ordering 2 or more Okin kits, if you will allow me to, I'd like to be recipient to a hammer-dimpled "one-off" version... please?!!!!!

Mmm yes, this is what I expected from a price point. Less actual hands on work = cheaper, but leave it open to wabi sabi.

Hey all, back from camping.. It was a great time! and as a bonus I got to give the Okin a real good testing.

Everything went just awesome. It was even better than I expected. It was so easy and light to carry in my backpack, no worries about breaking any glass, or hauling around extra batteries.

And I accidentally dropped it right into a bog while using it. No problems, just plucked it out, shook it off, and it was good to go.

It was just wonderful beside the campfire, and it was easy to share, there is no special technique to master once it's all set up. Just hand it off to a new user and let them enjoy!

Lots of photos were taken, but I'm still going through them, so I'll have to make a more photo-heavy update in a bit.
