Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

Jared

Cannabis Enthusiast
I smoked for the first time in months the other day. Woke up with the worst stomach pain I've ever had in my life but didn't attribute it to the smoke until reading the last few posts in this thread. I actually smoked a couple days in a row, both mornings I woke up incredibly nauseaus and awful feeling. Throwing up till I physically couldn't anymore. So I definitely think there's something to the smoke/CHS correlation.

Hey, I see a lot of you are wary of first time posters but honestly apart from medical papers, forums have been the only other place to find any information at all.

I am 26, smoker for 7 years, had been dabbing since springtime in conjunction with some heavy therapy I was going through for PTSD. BHO helped me get through this hard time and now that therapy is over I had gotten up to about 3 or for sessions a day doing two small dabs through water with a glass nail and a butane torch.

Around the middle of november I was seeing the second GI doctor in a month, I had to get a second opinion because the first doctor took one look at my symptoms and had no idea, suggested I begin nexium and take a fiber supplement (even though I had no BM complaints).

Basically, before halloween I began to have a gnawing pain at the top of my stomach that felt a lot like a hungry and empty stomach. Normally I would wake and dab it up, at first the nausea occurred while I was sitting after I had coughed it out so I began to be understandably concerned about the use of BHO and the blowtorch. I knew where my shit was coming from and it was properly purged, spent like 60 hours in a vacuum oven and was produced by a medical producer.

I went to the doctor but did not quit my use because I thought as we all did "if I have a stomach problem cannabis is probably the way to go in treating it" so I continued my routine. changed things like i stopped eating at least 2 hours before bed, took my nexium, elevated my pillows to prevent reflux and tried to eat something mild like a plain egg/cheese on toast. it was hit or miss whether I could keep the food down and honestly it seemed like my body required me to empty the contents of my already empty stomach for me to go about my day!!

I did not have symptoms during the day or at night except for maybe once or twice, all of the vomiting was confined to the 30 minutes after waking. I did not make the hot shower connection but I had bruised my tibia and had been taking VERY HOT baths nearly every night for that since the first week in october and I just felt great after!

I cut back on my dabs but not a lot. a week here or there would go by without symptoms but then a morning would come (followed by 2-4 more) where I just needed to empty my stomach.

a relative said that it sounded like cancer and even though I am not usually prone to that sort of logic i scheduled a second opinion with a different GI doctor at the same office because I was still in the dark 100% about my symptoms.

when I got there he said he had gone over the records they had and spoken to the first doctor, he asked me to describe for him one more time what was up and when I had finished he had two questions:

Was I taking a lot of hot baths/showers and was I doing it because it seemed to help the nausea?
(this was inconclusive because I was bathing a lot because of my bone bruise)
AND
Did I regularly use marijuana? he caught me off guard and I attested that I did.

Until Dr. Matlock (not kidding, that's the spelling and everything) told me about CHS I had never heard of such a thing! I asked if it was from concentrates and he said as far as he knew it happened in people who even only smoked once a week? I wasn't so sure about that.

he asked me to stop in a way that I kind of felt like he knew I was a worthless stoner who probably wouldn't stop, but said it is "really just a quality of life issue".

I thought about stopping, didn't think I could because I was still in therapy and simply cut down my use (I was using BHO exclusively). My sessions were over at the end of the year and between new years and a week ago I didn't really have symptoms.

on the 12th of this month my chest was hurting something awful and I didn't know why and I began to panic about my use and basic abuse of BHO. I saw a new primary care doctor who informed me the pain was muscular and not in my lungs. I told her about CHS and she said the only thing she heard about it was that abstaining from smoking was the only way to find out for sure if cannabis is the culprit.

on the 15th I got rid of all of my dab shit, gave it away to happy friends who were horrified at my story. I picked up a Sonic Vape as a fail-safe in case I was too weak to go without my crutch. I smoked once with the vape on the 15th and felt queasy the next morning so I kind of got a hint that I need to get a grip and give quitting a try, if not forever just to know for sure that cannabis is the cause.

I have read this entire thread and many others on grasscity and bluelight. I see that compared to many others my symptoms look like a pony-ride (being confined mostly to the morning, being still able to eat and hydrate) but I don't think that rules CHS out because many report morning symptoms.

How I feel, and this is just based on what my body feels like and what I have read, is that I have saturated my body with THC through heavy use of concentrates and when I wake up my body runs through the checks and goes "WE ARE OVERLOADED WITH THAT SHIT MANG". I hear the Hypothalamus controls the endocannabinoid system (pardon if I am wrong) and things like sleep temperature and specifically the esophageal plexus (don't know where I read it so again, pardon errors).

usually the pain in my stomach lingers until I cough and when I do I gag to vomiting, so the retching seems to originate from my esophagus since nothing comes from my lungs and I do not immediately empty my stomach as I normally would if I were sick.

I went cold turkey on the 16th so I am 4 days in an yesterday I had more queasyness than ever and was feeling super anxious and paranoid, a friend then forwarded me some shit about cannabis inducing schizophrenia and psychosis which is the least helpful shit in the world lol.

I realize I most certainly overdid it with BHO, it helped me survive difficult therapy but I really have no excuse to continue use, especially if it could be the cause of my mystery symptoms.

I am seriously hoping that after detoxing until my followup in march I can return to use in a very moderate manner with my brand new Sonic Vape... 5 years back the benzos they prescribed for my anxiety gave me 2 seizures and SSRIs made me feel like a robot, Mary Jane is the only thing I had found that could make me look on the bright side with minimal symptoms and I might have gone on fine if I didn't discover the wonders of BHO (which I don't think I will ever use again)

was queasy when i got up, forced down some oatmeal and have felt fine since. wanted to post here for anyone else who is digging for information on their mysterious symptoms!! thank you all for posting!!

Pff don't be offended but as current vegan and former reflux victim.. I'd say don't blame it on BHO.. EGGS AND CHEESE (and meat) are THE WORST THINGS TO EAT IN YOUR POSITION.. (Breads not good either) Don't call that plainfood cause it is chemical bomb.. :)..
I solved my problem with a greens and fruits and juices..I never liked diary and meat but getting them out of my menu help me get rid of lot of foods that contain them.. and surpsingly are bad for the stomack,. There is some turbulence in the beggining but green is the only way to go IMO.

I understand at this point you're ready to completely call it quits and I completely understand after reading your story. BUT you might want to try completely stopping for just a little while, then going back to strictly vaping and low temp dabs only. Unless you're using a carb cap and letting your nail cool down a lot before dabbing you're burning a lot of your dab away, and smoke is what caused my CHS to act up when I was having problems with it. Since switching to vaping I haven't had any problems whatsoever with CHS. I remember a while back a few other people were saying they think smoke might be the problem for them.

Sorry dude, but you are so in the wrong diretion.
Quite honestly Abysmal I could not disagree more. I think he's come to a more complete and full understanding of the medical situation than most people engaging in discussion on the topic.

Dairy and other difficult to digest foods may be a contributing factor, but they do not explain many of the symptoms and dietary modification has done little to many people in the same situation. I am happy that it has worked for you, but that is not consistent with the majority of cases that I have seen.

This mirrors the thoughts that I have regarding the pathology of this condition. While there has been little in the way of actual scientific research done on the topic, many of the medical professionals I've talked to have agreed that it is at least a valid possibility that the hypothalamus and endocannabinoid system are reacting to a cyclic buildup of cannabinoids and byproducts in the body.

Considering that my condition goes away relatively quickly after a few weeks of abstinence, and that it is not an issue for me when I consume in moderation, I'm really leaning towards this being the real reason behind what is going on. I'm not sure why it only happens in some people, and I really hope the medical community is willing to take this on soon. With cannabis becoming legal in so many places, legitimized research is likely as more and more cases appear.

I hope that you are feeling better soon - it really sucks for you to have to deal with this on top of other issues. Once your body has been able to clear itself out a bit, you might find that you can still vape on a much smaller scale. BHO kind of invites a high tolerance, which will lead to a larger and faster buildup of cannabinoids.

I respect your veganism and the good dietary changes have done for you but the only thing I really have cheese on is an egg/cheese because just egg isn't so tasty. Cabot Cheddar all the way, no sketchy cheese product. Basically the dr said "raise the head of your bed to prevent reflux" at night and when I thought to eat first I went to coconut milk (because again, I really don't do dairy apart from like two pieces of cheddar a week and yogurts) which seemed like it would be soothing but honestly it came up faster than the egg sammich!! my instinct was to eat something filling that was rich in protein and after the coconut milk/cereal was a flop eggs were the next option. I have a varied diet which includes plenty of veg and fruit, have taken to eating handfuls of unsalted peanuts or walnuts. for the past 4 days I have managed to force down some organic oatmeal if that makes you feel better! I do not have acid reflux and nexium made no difference in my condition over the 2 months I tried it.

I understand at this point you're ready to completely call it quits and I completely understand after reading your story. You still dab without issue after your episodes? I wondered if I could keep some around for particularly hard days but I am putting it out of my mind for the time being while I detox for at least a month. I have used a carb cap but do not own one, gave away my can of butane so I can't cheat the process. I am sure once I'm clean my tolerance will likely not require dabs for some time even if I am having a panic attack. this is the longest I have gone not smoking since I started!

Have you used the Sonic Vape? I overpaid in a headshop for it but it's got a ceramic bowl and a digital thermostat, looks pretty legit.

I am so glad I found this forum!! thank you for the thoughtful responses! I am sure they will do more medical studies once more people saturate their bodies in states where recreational dispensaries exist-- unfortunately many will likely be funded by the anti-cannabis community in their quest to SAVE THE CHILDREN when they find out that people can effectively "OD" on THC.

I am not sure anything else could have curbed my BHO intake so maybe it's best my body is limiting things so I can reset my tolerance. I am sure I will certainly return to using cannabis in some form (between the pain in my chest and realizing I needed to quit I was experimenting with making coconut oil from ABV/BHO, had it on toast with honey and it wasn't bad but I was queasy that day so I couldn't really tell how the effect was.)

it's weird as fuck not being high all day though... having to notice every little thing! I know BHO helped my therapy process because even without it my triggers are under control even if my anxiety peaks at times. also I wonder if the all-day spread of use could do it but really it's probably just that my body has NOWHERE TO PUT THE RESIDUALS no matter when I use it. I am overweight and wonder if my BMI could have an effect on how much THC gets to hang around... I'm a dog walker so I get around most days but walking isn't really cardio, a friend is giving me a hula hoop which I am going to take up in an effort to improve my health overall, sweat and metabolize a little better.

do any of you take Omega supplements and if so have you noticed any difference? it's probably a good idea regardless but I was just wondering.

I kind of wonder what snoop dog would do...... lol thanks guys!! will update you with anything that happens and keep a look out here!

Well i respect your opinions too :),for sure no one can be fully aware of some guy at the forums condition.. But for me acid reflux and food that require ACID not enzymes to digest sounds to me like.. My tummy hurts and i had nothing but plain nails for breakfast.. but that's my brain :).. I apologize if i sounded too Vegany.. :)
Lol and fuck doctors that are prescribing pills instead of food plan.. in case of reflux, this really should be a last resort , but that's for the fuck you thread (i guess) :).

lol nails. you know the food plan would take too much of their time!! basically the irregular emptying of my stomach happens no matter what I eat and whether I eat or not. Oatmeal is just about the most neutral thing I can think of. wasn't very queasy this morning but wanted to see if a hot bath in the AM would effect my state and honestly (not sure if the water wasn't as hot as usual) it didn't really help and when I rinsed off and brushed my teeth I gagged and in a bout 4-5 goes my stomach was empty. I wonder also if this has anything to do with blood sugar, will ask my doctor as soon as I can because I am overweight and have not been eating regular meals (even though when I do they are rather light, unspicy kale/blackbean soup which even you would be into abyss!

I feel like such a stoner crossing my fingers and hoping it's something else, still getting the knee-jerk to smoke in the morning but holding strong in the name of the scientific method. at the very least I am making my friends aware that over-doing it is entirely possible, I don't think they would even hear the possibility of CHS existing from anyone else and they can't believe I have stopped.

DR gave me vitaman D which seems to be helping me be less depressed and fatigued but it's a once a week 50,000IU for 6 weeks thing.

@Lostinprisms88 Have you tried doing sit ups on an empty stomach? I had stomach issues recently, it was a build of gas that was irritating me, and I noticed when I did sit ups using some type of resistance in the morning, it didn't bother me anymore after a while. Considering how the gut has over 100 million neurons, it makes sense why we would feel bad when our gut isn't feeling right.

If you do try the ab exercise, make sure you do it on an empty stomach because the gas will get worse if you don't. Don't even drink coffee, or juice. Just plain water 20-30 minutes before the workout. I like to do some type of cardio after my resistance training so the metabolism of the area I'm working out would be increased, and it won't take long for me to see results.

The gas is one of my biggest issues as well but I have never tried sit-ups... I'll have to see if that works the next time around.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!

I was able to abstain completely for just under 3 full weeks. that's: going from dabbing 3-5 times a day to absolutely nothing. at first this was tough but after the first week I was pretty involved in keeping busy. I got a hula-hoop which sounds silly as hell but it's really good exercise.

anyway, before I quit I invested in a "Sonic" portable vaporizer with a ceramic bowl and a digital thermostat because I know I tend to get triggers sometimes and have an anxiety attack or just get stuck in a cycle of disappointment and dread! while BHO helped me handle these things during my ptsd therapy I grew to accept that in order to completely rule out CH I had to dedicate myself to abstaining for as long as I could.

well, about 2.5 weeks in I noticed I no longer had morning symptoms of nausea. I continued my challenge until I woke up one morning we got a lot of snow, ate my oatmeal and went back to bed. maybe it was eating before laying down but I had a horribly graphic dream of wiggling one of my teeth and like half of my upper jaw coming out with it..... uhhh yeah it was so real that it made me anxious all day and around dinner time I still couldn't shake the nonsensical uneasiness so I broke out my vape and some super-dry flowers I had retained. initially I was nauseous but I attribute this to all the effort I put into abstaining and the plans I had to keep it up until I could pee in a cup in confidence and the worry I had about "what if this turns the symptoms back on again??"

I didn't smoke that much, just enough to feel it a bit. I got over the queasy feeling and went a few more days not smoking before smoking two small bowls worth on a Saturday. maybe I jumped the gun with a high temp (I am reading anxiety is assisted by lower vaping temps, rather than higher because of sedative effects) but I'm not kidding it almost felt like the first time I smoked? I enjoyed it and took a hot bath (as I am now accustomed to whether I have symptoms or not because of muscle stiffness from my fall in october.)

last week I ran into someone who had some CO2 extracted dabs and I had to try it because it's hard to get around here and I felt pretty good about my tolerance being cut. one itty dab had me sooooooooooofuckingstoned and ultra-paranoid but apart from that I haven't experienced the familiar morning vomiting after the partial detox.

two days ago I took another teeny dab at a friend's house and again was anxious but did not have symptoms.

the only other dietary change I made was adding an "elderberry immune gummy supplement" and drinking as much green and herbal tea as possible but at this point the ginger tea is not in a vain attempt to prevent vomitting.

this experience has been a game changer but I am relieved that I did not go past a point of no return or something as some people were mentioning could be possible!!!

if you are experiencing these mysterious symptoms and you are a regular dabber or HEAVY combuster I strongly recommend you try the experiment I did and then see if vaping flowers with an accurate temperature gauge awakens your symptoms once they subside and you are itching to medicate.

I am sure my doctor won't be thrilled that I couldn't stop for the "3 months" he recommended. I am kind of disappointed in myself but not really as much as I thought. I realize that the strong medicine was there for me when I was in dire need but that I am not snoop dog and I don't have anywhere to keep all that fucking THC.

my appointment is in a month and I will report on anything that happens after this.

I am looking into adequate vaping temperatures for anxiety and depression.

oh, worth noting, when I did dab I let the nail cool for a moment and capped the nail, did cough a lot but since they were so small and spaced out I didn't manage to illicit the symptoms I detest!

thank you for the advice everyone!! have tried the sit-ups and they do certainly make me burp.

hadn't heard of that gallbladder problem and I am kind of glad, wouldn't want a cut-happy doctor taking that shit out unless it's necessary!!

@Lostinprisms88

Do you find that green tea relaxes you? I find that it can make my anxiety worse. I try to keep any caffeine intake to one cup in the morning.

Drinking a lot of caffeine/green tea etc can make me very tense. It messes with my head and muscles.

Try cbd if you can get it. I've tried cbd oils and I like them way better than regular flowers. If I was in the west I bet I could make an eight of regular weed last 2+ months by using it with cbd.

I self medicated for about 7 years trying to figure out my anxiety and depression issues. For me it was useless and I just ended up with a bad habit that excelarated my issues. Maybe it would have been different if it had been legal and I had options but I didnt.

I think a very big part of medicating for anxiety is how often you use it. I have quit for 2 months and came back robot with good vibes but after daily use I was back in the pot hole.

...Just my opinions...

I wish I wasn't taught the "smoke weed everyday" or "this is my medicine" mentality during those years.... Its different for everyone. But everyone is so shook about it because the fact that its illegal i feel its negative and benifits are pretty exagerated solely for the hope that it is legalized or remains illegal respectively.

At what amounts are folks experiencing CHS symptoms? Are we talking about an ounce per week users including those heavy into concentrates, or can this also affect daily users on <1/8 of dry flower per week? I apologize if I missed that information in the thread or literature.

My girlfriend have CHS.. Camed out of the blue. We didn't knew this existed.. Smoked like 10/15 joints a day.. When we found out what was making her ill, we stopped and she did get better in couple days. We started maybe a month later again with 2joints a day..without problems.. Than it became like 5/6 joints a day and now 3/4 months later the illness is back.. Now stopped almost 2days and she still feel like dying and won't stop puking, all day she's desperate showering

Thank you all for the posts and information. I was recently diagnosed with CHS by an ER doctor. Thankfully it was only my second visit to an ER before a doctor named the condition. I am in Colorado and had no really issue allowing the doctor to know I was a regular user. Between reading the few scholarly articles available for free and this forum I am confident in the diagnoses. I am right now 7 days off of any cannabis use. I am hoping soon to go back to a moderate level of intake. Again thank you to all who have posted your experiences on here.

thanks to all for sharing their stories ... i wonder how many sufferers are using organic weed, i.e. absolutely, positively, no pesticides. imidacloprid is the most widely used insecticide in the world for food crops. not thought to be toxic, but can cause emesis in overdose. hypersensitivity to this compound could (?) explain why non cannabis users have CVS.

i've been feeling a very uncharacteristic slight nauseous feeling in the morning and have been switching between some commercial herb and some known organic herb during the day. i plan to cut out the commercial herb for a while to see if there is any connection.

could be due to stress - the retail market is in the shitter, so my retail sales are way down - and i have been exercising an hour a day 5 out of 7 days, maybe too much for this 67 year old body. i'm not vegan or vegetarian, but i only eat good, whole food. and some Ben&Jerry. i like Cabot Cheddar, too!

always too many confounding factors, but cutting out the commercial herb is easy to test.

This could easily be tested on someone with CHS who is willing. Someone with CHS could cut out all MJ for a few months and then reintroduce organic weed in small quantities.

Seems like most people with CHS are heavy users. I wonder if its an immune response; could be pesticides but could also be something in MJ itself.

Hopefully research picks up for CHS suffers, this needs to be studied and understood.

I can tell you that for sure is not caused by pesticides. Looking at myself and others I have read about it is heavy users that experience CHS. I agree it could possibly be an immune response like an anaphylactic reaction to something. It was a very extreme situation I experienced with CHS. I thought I was going to die.
Wow sorry to hear that man. Is it better now? If so what did you do, take a tbreak?

This is so interesting to me. I have dealt with this. (Not sure if it's this but the symptoms sure lined up at time. ). I find it has gone away completely since switching to strictly wax and only vaping the wax. No combustion and no dry herb I miss it s but. But if this may b what I have. Dam. Thk u for educating people cause I would never have imagined. I need to research this. Did anyone have the nausea come on after craxy head aches ( that's how mines started ).
