Dumb question! I've got an older dog (beautiful 2012 oak and bloodwood piece!) but when i got it stems were still the tiny-diameter glass with the silicone gasket dealie. Is this compatible with the new all-glass stems as well?

Yep, your older Pup should be compatible with the all glass Direct Draw and GonG stems.. but not the SS tipped Nylon Stems and NonGs. :)

I bought one of those $5 dimmers @underdog mentioned a few pages back because my Dog runs hot even with the ext cord.......works perfect
Its exactly like the dial for the nano but without numbers......I'll have to find some paint or something to mark off my sweetspot, but now i dont have to move my screens halfway down my glass.......

Does the wall wart plug into the dimmer? (A/C side) or the UD plug (D/C side)? Would the variable A/C voltage hurt the Wallwart? @underdog

You don't really need to use any wax at all for essential oil aromatherapy. Just fill cup half way and turn on heat. If you want to stabilize the oil in the cup to prevent accidental spillage, put a little cotton in first and then oil. Use a dropper to fill, don't pour as it can get messy.

 I'm not sure on the paraffin but i have the remains of a pine scented candle from x-mas time that was handy and seemed to work as well as the bee's wax when i added oil to it. I would think there are alternatives to bee's wax since some people are actually sensitive and have a reaction to it.

I wonder if diluting essential oils in water is a good way to use the UD for aromatherapy (it would sorta help with the spillage thing too, in that that any spill would be primarily water). I haven't tried this or beeswax yet, have just been using essential oils straight, but would prefer to dilute so I can use less. I don't imagine that the usual carrier oils for aromatherapy (e.g. coconut, almond, apricot, olive, avocado, jojoba) are meant to be used with heat, so thinking water could be an alternative for this kind of application...

Nice! The dimmers might not be perfect (or have numbers lol) but you sure can't beat the $6 price and ease of use.

Thanks Dave!! What temp do you guys prefer? Or voltage

It depends a bit on what specific material I'm using and what stems but usually I like the Nylon stems at about 12.3v, with the glass stems run around 12.5v IIRC but it's been a while.

Dimmers for this application are low voltage DC so go between the wall wart and the Dog only. The power supplies don't like having their AC input voltage varied and suffer problems, if not damage, when that happens so it's not an option.

I've cut some oils with water (really strong smelling ones) and it seemed to work just fine, I imagine it would for most of them. That said I prefer using wax and full strength oils the majority of the time.

Ambrosia Maple Twiggy from the last sale of '14. Pups almost 5 months old! snapped a quick low light phone photo, with some random things thrown in for size comparison. this was after applying some underbutter~

Underdog & Underdoggette, thank you guys so much for your labor of love that makes life better!

Great Scott!
Just occured to me that this vape was the first time I went in the opposite direction of LEDS and complicated electronics etc. I am a tech nerd. I will ALWAYS be a tech nerd, it comes with my job even. But the simplistic design and its hand made elegance won me over... FOUR years ago. Same underdog is still kicking 24/7 heat, currently on aroma duty, and my twig is on 24/7 for vaping.

I was thinking about it and not ONE other product in my entire life has been used so heavily and consistently. I tried the volcano and the vapexhale during this time, but all the others vapes come and go quickly. Portable vapes I seem to change at least yearly (please tell me the mighty will be the one to stay!) but the Underdog just simply isn't leaving. Its really a testament to its perfection for my usage. If I had ANY storage at all in the 1 series, I'd be buying a dedicated car underdog next lol, but those Germans are so focused on just driving properly, that theres no need for storage haha.

Just wanted to say thanks for the years of service :) Someday I'll end up with a collection like you dog hoarders in here, but its so hard to justify another just because I have 2 that are flawless and I feel like I'm neglecting the one I'm not using at the time lol. Perhaps someone needs to make an adapter so I can put BOTH dogs into my mobius matrix at once!

Now there is a new take on the old phrase...."threesome".

Thanks Dave and Amanda for fixing us up again with a new pup and assorted stems, etc. We are anxiously awaiting my release from the justice(?) system, a bit over a week now, to give her a try. One of the many great service attributes from Underdog is very fast shipping which is especially nice to go along with an excellent performing piece of art that will be around forever.

Beautiful days in the neighborhood lately. Howling Hills Farm started spring sales a month earlier than last year which was three weeks ahead of any previous year. Hi Tunnels are paying off.

Everybody from Underville is invited to have an extra heavy pull on May 6th in celebration of Zapman being done with the Idaho criminal justice system. It will be very close to 3 years from start to finish of my drug war penance for making Aromazap for over ten years.

Rick you are a boss and a true gentleman. Have a good day, and enjoy that dog when you can!

I remember reading a while back about some units began to make a rattling noise after some thorough usage, but I also thought I remembered Dave saying that the problem had been fixed for future dogs by using a different type of adhesive. I got my poplar dog in Jan. of this year, and it has succumb to the rattling noise unfortunately. Not a big deal as it functions perfectly, I just wanted to know if this specific sign of wear raised any red flags for anyone.

Good question, thanks for asking.

Rattling UDs is a fairly rare occurrence but not unheard of.. fortunately there should be no effect on performance, function or reliability. Even so, if you want, we'd be happy to look at your Dog if you wanted to send it in for a checkup.

Now, not specific to your post, I'll include some background on rattling for those info-hounds out there.

There are a couple different types of rattling that may occur, primarily the stainless steel core inside the wooden body and the heating element inside the stainless steel core.

Early generation Underdogs were prone to core rattling inside the wood after a period of use (similar to the core rattle experience by PDs/Zaps/misc Logs) but with progressive design improvements over later generations we largely reduced or eliminated this type of rattle. These rattles usually have a low 'thunk' sound.

Heating element rattling was something that we never had significant/regular problems with as we potted the bottom leads of the element to the core bottom with high-temp silicone which usually prevented movement. That said there were the occasional Dogs that the element rattled a little anyways for whatever reason but they were pretty uncommon. There were some special Dogs that were more prone to element rattling like Vegan Dogs (made without the silicone potting), some repaired Dogs that the silicone wasn't reapplied after repair and some early Dogs using our first generation stainless heating element. These rattles are usually have a higher 'tink' sound, sometimes described as sounding like a tiny bell.

Now we have some new lines of Underdogs that rattling of the heating element is more common due to different design choices, specifically the Econo-Dogs and new production Air Cores. Both of these have the element 'floating' and not secured to the core. This allows (amongst other things) a faster heat up time and reduced heat conduction to the wooden body but the inherent movement of an unsecured element leads to a higher likelihood of rattling.

So, to recap, rattling should never effect performance, reliability or function of a Dog and may or may not be considered within 'spec' as detailed above. :2c:
