Word gonna have to mosey over to that page. I don't do FB. Is it private?
. It was, but now it's public

Edit: I cut some 1/2" thick, 3" x6" stainless steel plates today for press #2. I lightly beveled the outer edges about 3/4" all the way around both plates creating a gap on the outer edges for rosin to flow into. Surface squish area is about 1.5" x 3.5". Something to do!

Silly question to the electrical/math guys/gals. I have a 110v soldering iron that is rated 60 watts.

if A=W/V so 60/110 = .54A correct? So if I have 2 soldering irons hooked in parallel that gives me 1.09 amps?

So If my PID "contact capacity of output is rated 250V AC 3A (resistive load)" I should be ok? Do i need a 5a relay to be safer?

2 soldering irons on full seems like they should draw a bit more than an amp but i dunno. I hate letting the smoke out of electronics.

Edit: Another FB Macgyver press. I love these!!

It depends...two power sources or one?
Your first calculation of .54A is correct. Although it should say on the iron how much current it draws normally (ymmv).

@farscaper...so you mean use two small slick pads, yes? My exact thinking...a use two small slicks, two small screens, nug int the middle of that sandwich.

I was thinking today if using frozen nugs would make a difference being that freezing makes the heads come off real easy...and maybe some benefit with going from so cold to so warm under pressure in a short time?....thoughts?

I was going to power it with the one controller. The controllers are cheap so I might just get another one for each. There are no marking on the iron or specs on the box. It's china ceramic rod Gong You brand. Thanks

@CrazyDiamond the actual size wont matter just dont fold them or they will pop little silicone squares out from between the fiberglass fibers.

I don't know why the idea keeps coming back in my mind too... I think maybe I will try freezing some pre compressed pucks with a little weight on top to keep them compressed during freezing.

I figure a g is worth the knowledge.

@Joel W. keep in mind that those are max limits and you wont be running maxed out on those heaters all the time.

are you gonna install them inside your rollers??

I am installing them in the rollers and now in a set of other plates as well if they work ok.

Edit: Ya the PID, temp probe, and 2 soldering irons for $30 delivered. If I cook a $10 PID, no big deal. ;)

sorry for back to back.

so....picked up an arbor press today. went with the 1 ton version
One Rosin Macgyver for you! This guy hooked a PID to the hair iron heaters!

Haha, "hooking up my straightener to my PID then then setting up a press"

Dead the fuck on. Hahaha

Pressed a gram of "Kill Shot" and it came out super shattery. Usually when I make rosin it's a pretty firm pull n snap but this is straight shatter. Also suuuuuuper sweet smelling. Reminds me of the rainbow kush I pressed a while back. Got a 15% return and I know there's a good bit left in the nuggs.

Also pressed some "Sunshine Daydream" and it came out pretty good. I think one of the presses was a little hot so it isn't quite as shattery. Figured out I can crank it down to 260 and still get good results if I get enough pressure on it.

Thanks to everyone for their tips. Two major hurdles I've encountered that got crowdsolved and I'd like to share.

1. Tortilla Tech FTW: I had some well cured cherry pie I stored with boveda 62s that wouldn't press for shit. Stored in mason jar w/ half a flour tortilla overnight and she squirted like a porn star!!! Like 5x what I pulled out day before. I had a different strain stored same way that yielded well so I thought it was a strain dependent problem but I was wrong.

2. Ice Pack Pickins: If you run into rosin that won't come off the parchment (from either sappy results or environmental factors i.e. room temperature or humidity), lay your parchment on an ice pack while you pick it off. Be careful cause it's instantaneous and you can easily launch chips across the room. You can get every last little speck this way.

You are all wizards and should be very proud of what you're accomplishing. I hope this little bit of knowledge I am able to share will be of use to anyone else learning and perfecting this awesome method via denial & error. Rosin tech is magnificent!!!

Remember the post ways back about "you grow shitty rosin" ? Would getting into some of the variables that make "more" rosin production during flower break the rules here? cold temps, stress, ect?

I tried the hair iron. was meh yield and unenjoyable process. my wife dyes her hair and so her iron STUNK. lol. maybe with a new one..

But it was YUM so if I can get it right.. press then qwet then tincture. drier is better for alcohol extraction anyway and ive been looking for a way to non-wastefully dry the herb before a wash. maybe this is it! so I'm currently heating up a marble slab and a marble mortar in the oven to 280 and we'll see how it works :)

im gonna step on it. Using Colorado indoor grown Blue Dream. :luv:

EDIT: OK THAT WAS FUN. ended up passing out at my computer lol and now i just finished the rest off i couldn't help myself. THE MARBLE SLAB WORKED! the marble mortar worked too but it would be better if i made a mechanical press because i was getting a twisting motion causing wrinkling to the parchment.

What I have noticed since concentrating is that oil runs away from heat. it always wants to find that cool spot. sometimes it's hard to get oil off the tool onto the nail because of this fact. what I noticed about the parchment when it wrinkled, the oil resided in droplets on the high spots of the parchment, away from the hot surface. so if we could create a contraption to press cool and collect. something to channel the oil away from the heat.. with ridges in a radial formation.. and im thinking the press should have heat concentrated

There's 2 things I really don't like. The parchment paper/slickpads. and the waxiness of it.
i shutter to think how much silicone is leaching is the product with temps and pressures like this.. silicone really shouldn't be heated imho.. and the slickpads, great for cold work but heat makes our precious little slickpads stink like a chemical. I tried using em for the press one time and it smelled so nasty.. won't try it again. and parchment is just silicone to so im looking for an alternative. oh and the waxiness. The vapor stickied up my mouth.

i wonder how many stoners are thinking about rosin tek right now

@phooka

what do you mean by waxiness? is there a harshness when you vape it? the rosin I've made usually is not as smooth as BHO but it's hard to tell if that's due to plant waxes or just contaminants (rosin, even clear stuff, leaves more residue on the nail than BHO)

Interesting, I thought I read several in here with opposite results. I've yet to try rosin myself, so can't comment with my own experiences. Soon though!

I can say conclusively that rosin is much harsher. Not only am I sure that rosin tech extracts waxes, but I am sure fats come out too. Most lipids readily liquify when hit with enough heat so this property should lend itself to fats getting into your rosin dabs.

I have stopped doing rosin for a good few weeks now, since I prefer winterized absolutes without the harshness and with a smoother taste and more consistent results.

Still, I can see how for many it makes getting very good non-absolute extracts possible, which can only be a good thing - especially because looking at pics of so many dispensary waxes/oils from testing sites, I know I'd wanna be dabbing rosin over many of them!

Thanks. And just to clarify, when you say "absolute", you mean something that's been winterized through a sub-micron filter, right?

An absolute in solvent extraction is used to refer to an extract which has had waxes removed.

In my case, I sub-micron filter all of my oils for extra safety but this is not necessary criteria, really the only crucial feature of an absolute is some processing to get waxes out (yup, winterizing will do nicely :) ).

I recall on hash church someone explained, IIRC as it has been a few weeks and I'm paraphrasing, that the heat melts the lipids/wax that help hold the trichrome heads in place. This liquefaction of the wax/lipids and trichromes creates the rosin. So there is definitely some wax and other stuff in there that may not be in your solvent exacts (depending on your tek of course).
