Can someone please explain the domed screens that I've seen people talking about using with the Solo? How do they work?

Also, why is there no Best Of Solo thread?

While there are a lot of home made dome screens in various posts, probably the best was suggested by our own Sinclue. Here's a post with the link to his original post (and the source of them on EBay), complete with a photo of one installed in an Air stem:

As to why there's no 'Best of Solo' thread it's probably because you haven't compiled it yet? Take a few minutes to review some of the 33,000 posts and make your suggestions? The job is open as I understand it.

I can't really tell from that picture (still half asleep), but is the convex (bulge) side of the screen in the stem facing left or right? I assune it's facing left?

Pretty sure the dome is meant to face out... and to me, in that pic, it's facing right. (out)

Oh man am I looking forward to the Vortex Gong. Hopefully the blue nubs are available in the final version :D

Tonight it's the D020-D + Headband (Sour Diesel x OG Kush) + Solo

Those preformed screens are perfect and well worth every penny and I say this after having brought 50 Solo screens from PIU a week prior. But after a few people here rated them I ordered 20. I will never buy another screen as it's a pain in the ass to shape and fit other screens in the stems. :2c:

That's an affirmative your last regarding orientation, the photo has the dome 'out' (right). Most guys go this way I think, although it works fine as a cup rather than a dome. This has the advantages of keeping the four ports clear without reducing the flow (screen blocks part of the path if it's too close to the glass partition) and reducing the bowl capacity some.

Another big advantage to 'dome up' is, I think, it makes the load more a disk than a cylinder. OK, a shorter cylinder. This means more herb (percentage wise) is facing the cup (faster recovery time.

Amen.

Not only are they very well formed (better than we can ever hope to do without special tooling) but the trim on the rim is basically perfect. Heavier wire than can be easily hand formed, so they keep their shape very well.

The only downside I've found is some of the new stems are more tapered at the bottom of the bowl (just before the partition) so the screens want to 'cam up' unless you bend the very lip parts in a bit so they no longer bear on the wall/corner but rather let the contact happen above the corner.

Very neat product. I ordered 20 more since I've been giving them away to everyone I know with a Solo or Air. Unfortunately a goof up there ended up shipping 15 instead (still paid for 20 or course), having some troubles getting the shorted ones......... That too is worth the effort I think.

Try 'em, odds strongly favor your liking them. A lot.

Hey guys. New member here. I decided to buy a Solo from Aroma Tek yesterday because I want to start preserving my lungs after years of using bongs and bubblers and j's. I had a volcano in college, but haven't done much vaping since. I'm expecting the unit to arrive later today (Super fast shipping!).

Anyways, any must know information for a noob? I already purchased screens and o rings. Also is there a way to add a carb?

I suggest you start stock, then experiment with screens. Do not, repeat, do not install the o-ring (there are two sizes......at least....) until you understand things. It (the mod) is not intended to do any more than keep the bent stem from rotating, rushing into it because you 'read it on the web' can lead to broken tabs that are not considered warranty covered failures.

The only way I know of to add a carp is in some of the GonG adapter stems. I have one I don't use the carb hole, it's blocked by teflon tape, but it was the only type available when I went shopping at PV.

Okay, I see. So the domes don't prevent accidental pullthroughs and scooby snacks.

I disagree. IMO they screen debris just like any other screen with that mesh.

Heed this advice. Learn the solo first. For most we don't need o rings and extra screens. Once you have this little vap sussed then customise if necessary.

The way I understand that they fit in is like (red = dome):

^ Is that correct? Or is the dome facing the other way?

If the way I have it is correct, then I don't see how that prevents you from getting scooby snacks. If it were facing down, then I would understand.

You are correct.

Except that you put your herbs ON the screen, not IN. They aren't that big.

Just doing some research, the hottest temp we can inhale is 45 Celsius before we actually burn our airways
Huh? How is that possible? I mean there are regions where it gets hotter than 45° on some days in the summer and what's with a sauna? I gets 90°C in there and people are happily spending 10minutes each in there.

On another note, whenever I'm going to get some italian pizza with my buddy, we do a thing called pizza vaping; you take the box with the fresh hot pizza packed inside, open the two little holes on the front and breath the hot flavoured air out of it. To me it seemed hotter than 45°C but my mouth isn't a reliable thermometer

The Vortex Gong = Smoooooooth Hits

After some initial testing , The V-Gong is well worth looking into .
It offers the same characteristics as the V-stem , ie smoother draws ,
less harshness and irritation to your throat .

I had to stir my load , for a fuller extraction .
The top layer was much darker than the bottom .
Which is why I prefer the Shorty bowls on all my Gongs .
I can cash a bowl in 3 - 4 hits and get complete extraction .
Def. gonna keep my eye out for the Shorty V-Gong when they come in stock .

For now , to combat this .
1st pic
NO2 screen for DIY Shorty bowl , the cup form
keeps the herbs from touching the sides and simulates
a convection hit , so to speak . But the catch-22 is
Not utilizing the Heat retention of the thick glass for
more of a Conductive hit .

2nd pic
I pushed the dome screen all the way down and added
a screen partition on top . Creating my own Shorty V-Gong .
The Conductive hits are denser and more , like an extra hit or 2 .
This is my current method .

Tampon for drying weed?

Naw, weed tipped condom. Prototype testing was unsuccessful, never made it to Beta testing......

This comes up from time to time. First off, we're not sucking in 400F hot air and vapor mix, it cools a lot before we get involved. The real heat (in calories) carried by the vapor isn't much, it cools quickly. This is why you find more 'wand hash' at the bowl end of the stem, by the time it makes it very far stuff it cool.

Likewise the energy carried by the hot air in the sauna. What happens when you throw water on the rocks? Does the temperature go up (no.....)? Yet there's definitely a 'hot flash' because the water vapor (steam) carries more heat (calories) than the dry air does.

It's also a concentration game. You can easily wave your finger through a torch flame, right? Plenty hot in there...... But at a molecular level, very few hot gas molecules contact lot more cold skin at any instant. The heat from that small amount of gas (relatively speaking) is simply spread around a lot more skin molecules so each of them gets only a minor heat rise.

The neat part is it works so well, no matter if we understand exactly why or not.......

After using the Solo for... Idk how long already...
Since December something of last year i think...
I hardly ever, ever smoke anymore. And i find myself turning down bowls, joints and blunts way more often than not.
I can't see a life without my Solo. Smoking sucks dick and vaping is the shit.

I'm gonna buy 2 more. One for a decade down the road. and one for whenever this one goes out. Yup.

Left to right
No2 screen, Ebay 1/2 inch dome screen, ebay 1/2 inch dome flattened home made dome, home made dome.
Home made ones I used 5/8 screen and shaped and trimmed them.

ebay Dome inserted like a basket

Flattened Ebay dome cuts stem in half and no herb stuck around sides. I use this the most no stirring needed at all.

Basket just in lip of stem

And No2 screen in mouth end of stem.

I use them in all my solo/Air stems, keeps bud out of mouth and when it clogs I stick it in stem and vape it. looks fudged up but fits in perfectly.

@Ratchett was looking into making a screen press also.
but if you dont want to make em yourself the Ebay ones that @Sinclue came across are a great deal as long as you dont lose them you'll have more than you will need.

Ebay domed link, you can ask for any amount I bought 10 and got 12.
