Has anyone tried using coffee filters to press bubble hash instead of a legit screen? Or has anyone found cheap local substitutes? I'm not sure if I'm going to be doing this very often and don't really want to pay $15 for a bubble bag from a local grow store that I'm just going to cut up. (Yeah I know I'm a cheap bastard.)

In the past I theorized that escaping moisture was the culprit for pushing the oil out. So, I looked at the patties I had pressed so hard I nearly scalded my hand; using a 20x loupe I could see, trichs, trichs everywhere, many unbroken. On one patty, you could see a circular really low bead of oil. So I tried something, I put a drop of water in the middle of it and pressed it again. Boom, ROSIN.

Looking at this visual information and drawing conclusions, it is pretty apparent to me that there is an optimum moisture content and temp for pressing nugs. As well as a speed component at play. You want nugs that are moist enough to make ample steam to push the oil out, but not so moist that too much heat is lost. Heat source hot enough to melt oil and make steam, but not so hot that too much steam is lost before enough pressure is applied. Enough pressure to force the oil and steam to take an outward path, and the pressure should be applied as fast and hard as possible.

These are the conclusions I have come to regarding my experiences and observations made. I've not drawn any others but if anyone has anything to add, I welcome that.

Is the bag screen different from the press screen? I ask because in Johnny B's Pt2 vid he shows a nasty shriveled and stained press screen he used. Not a good look imo..

I wonder where he got the idea...
As a big concentratelover i'm following this thread closely, it will be a few weeks before i can try it on quite fresh buds, which are not too dry yet sadly. :ugh:
I am wondering though if it would be possible to 'rehydrate'(i'd strictly use RO- or demineralised water) older, dryer buds a bit, if the steam theory holds that might be enough to get (reasonably)good results as opposed to the disappointing ones some seem to get with these?

Keeping a close eye on the experiences with tortillamakers, these are peaking my interests very much. :tup:

:rofl: So I cheaped out big time y'all, ordered this $5 (shipped) flat iron on amazon which took a couple of weeks to show up from china, got here today and... it's freakin' tiny! Maybe a half inch wide and gets really hot, probably too hot, had to wrap it in a folded wash cloth to press because I couldn't handle it directly it's soo hot. Good for $5 worth of entertainment I guess though, I managed to squeeze a couple of tiny dabs out of a piece of bubble hash. I used the corner of my "authentic" bubblebag dry screen and it is now permanently creased from the heat only after a few presses, so it would be nice to find an alternative. I wanted to stick my toe in before jumping head first.

Ok, Inspiration time guys.... Imagine if you will, 2 large 12" round rollers that are heated and covered in non stick material. Now put said rollers in an ajustable jig with fixed blades for scraping rosin. Attach a variable speed drive motor to the rollers. Set speed to spit out buds in desired 3-4 seconds of good press time. Set temp to perfered temps.

Feed in buds on one side, collect rosin on the other...

with enough people fiddling around with rosin we were all bound to figure out that the process was going to have its kinks and secret loopholes...

I also speculated that the RH (relative humidity) of the buds would be the key as to why very resinous but too dry buds will not produce decent RHO. I have a flower that will not produce and so I will sacrifice some to experimentation soon. which will pretty much solidify for me personally if its a matter of rh helping.... be that the case one must then ask how much hydration is to much? can we squeeze em fresh like lemons?

however as with any extraction you can't squeeze juice from a raisin. or abv for that matter.

edit. @Joel W. I really wanted to try a laminator lol but I dont think a small one could produce pressure...

find a miniature linen press and you have it lol.

so further experimentation yielded an interesting result.

RH is key! in fact its a big key. regardless of how much your running or how much pressure you can provide you still need a carrier for the oil... otherwise its just going to sublimate right out of the waxy trichome dermis and right into that sponge dry plant matter.

ive came uppon this because alot of my rosin dabs sizzle. as we know from solvent extraction sizzles are usually a solvent. [especially since im using a low temp enail the enail is a constant rather than variable in this equation]

so that sizzle got me thinking... and as we all should know water when referenced as a solvent is hydrosol.

  1. About Hydrosols and FlowerWaters. A hydrosol is the condensate water that is left over after the process of extracting an essential oil by water or steam distillation. This aromatic watercontains the very essence of everything that was contained within the plant when it was still alive and growing.
so since we can assume that if the relative humidity of the bud plays a roll then we are not actually using a truly solvent free extraction.
we are using the buds natural hydrosols to carry the plant oils via sublimation from a mass of matter to the area around it.

so what if the plant matter has been ridden of more natural hydrosol than is required for proper sublimation to occur?

add some.

in conclusion. I agree. and thats why.

oh and I used distilled water to hydrate a dehydrated flower and then pressed it and it produced RHO.

a vice can be too slow to get in and out of.... at least a bench vice was. maybe those arbor vices might be.

What about taking two pieces of flat cast iron or another material, and put them in the oven at 325°F until completely hot. Then take them out and place them in the DIY pizza press in my previous post using a few rare earth magnets with some high temperature adhesive.

That would be cheap and easy. Trying to keep it simple.

I am going to make one of these with scraper blades and have it bolted to a hot plate! I think we only need non stick if we are trying to collect rosin by hand. If the rollers were true and tight and the blade adjusted correctly, the scraper would collect the rosin off the roller before it got back around to the front in theory. The tolerences would need to be tight enough like a flake ice machine.

I was thinking. I wonder if an impulse sealer could be used to seal together two pieces of parchment? Then maybe you could use one to seal the nug in a parchment pocket, so that any vapor that would normally escape would be captured. You'd then cut along the seal to remove the chip and get to your rosin… Maybe?

Day 2: Decided to just combine all 4 strains of collected rosin.. I have no ideas how much it weighs but it's slightly thicker than the nickel.. Small, eyed out ".2 " nugs of Jack H, Diablo , kush#19, Jean guy

Smells like body oder, squeezed lemon, and pepper spray.

What is the best way to store this? Wrapped in parchment paper in the fridge? Freezer? Dark dry place? I wanna save this for hard times :)

Got my slick pads today.

I'm going to have to do some more experimenting, because the thickness of the pads definitely changes the heat and pressure dynamics. I started out with the slick pad and the tortilla press and wasn't getting very good results… I adjusted the position of the nugs and tried to apply more pressure, which helped a bit.

I switched to the hair straightener. I used a higher heat (something like 372ºF I think) and tried to take advantage of being able to focus my pressure on a smaller surface area. That helped. The slick pads are definitely cool products with great physical properties. Be careful though, because the silicone definitely stays hot a lot longer, especially when you're taking the whole thing in and out of a tortilla maker.

I'm looking forward to seeing how different folks moisture experiments work out.
This was the real kicker. Halfway through I remembered reading about RH and adding moisture, so I thought what the hell I'll give it a shot.

I took a .3 gram nug and carefully applied a few drops of water. This felt like a weeeeird thing to do, since I'm used to keeping my nugs the hell away from water! I was surprised by how hydrophobic the nug was, as the drops of water just sat there indefinitely on the surface. Then I realized that this shouldn't have surprised me; of course, it's a flower! Anyways…

I added mutliple drops to compensate for the fact that most of the water simply ran off of it, trying to get some small amount of moisture in there. I pressed it out in the hair straightener and WOW! Significantly improved yield, at least 2-3x just eyeballing. Tried it again in the tortilla maker. Boom, same deal.

So, yeah. In the realm of moisture, heat, pressure, and time… Moisture is seeming to be king??

By the way, the purity of the rosin has gone up since switching from parchment to slick pad. I think it has to do with a combination of pressure distribution changing the way the flower presses, a decreased stickiness, and eliminated melting of parchment. No screens involved.

Many tortilla presses are made only for flattening a ball of corn flour so that it can be cooked on stove top. I'm pretty sure that one doesn't apply any heat.

Agreed. I think I can fix that though. ;).

Edit: I want to heat just the center of the rollers where the bud inserts so the ends of the rollers are cooler. This should aid in helping the rosin flow away from the bud to the sides of the rollers.
