7.4v and up mods

Hi everyone,
Been lurking since I bought my Dr Dabber and googled around for a better atomizer. I'm looking to upgrade from my 3.7v battery to something that can hit 7.4v (gotta get that Hercules!), fire a donut (Divine Tribe's, or a DIY), and generally last me into the future (since voltage seems to be trending up for more proper dab-like devices). People here seem to have a good amount of experience, and I wanted to see if anyone has tried either of the following Mods, and might have some insight.

The models I'm considering are the eleaf istick 30/50w units and the SMOK BEC pro. I know the istick 30 and 50w units just started shipping, but I was hoping someone might have some experience with the 23w (which hits 7.6v) that would give me an idea of what to expect with the 30w units. The SMOK BEC seems to be highly regarded, so I'm leaning that direction, but the slim size of the istick units is alluring.

Alternately, maybe there are some mods out there that kick these to the curb for low res atomizers, and my google skills are too lackluster to find them.

Thoughts?

I have been thinking about the dna40 vapor flask v3 with temp control. It has a new temp control chip for vaping ejuice, but I read comments about setting it to kanthal or other type of heating wires. I dont know how this could translate into temp control using the hercules though and it doesnt have mention of voltage control, the prefered method of the manufacturer.

Here are a recollection of posts pertaining using modboxes with the hercules: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/will-hercules-sr74x-work-on-a-variable-voltage-e-cig-mod.16870/

The smok bec pro has swappable 18650 batteries, but pumping 7,4v out of a single 3.7v battery is hard on them. The eleaf istick 50w works on a battery pack; no swapping on the go but less strain on the battery if I may extrapolate from "pumping 7,4v out of a single 3.7v battery is hard on them".

Anw, tx for the suggestions. Last time I scanned fasttech, I couldnt find a single vv mod box outputting 7,4v+. Now I have 2 sure choices and a maybe. I will let the new possibilities sink in :)

Or you can ditch those sissy low power box mods and go for one of these bad boys.

I have the SMY 260. It uses three 18650 batteries and can do upwards of 12v. Its a beast that's for sure.

thanks, I think the 50w istick may be worth a try at $50. I really like the smok bec pro, but I'm beginning to think maybe a several year old model isn't the place to start.

The simplest way to power a Hercules is with a mechanical mod, stacked 18350's. This was common among electronic cigarette users before the advent of regulated mods. They are arguably less safe than a regulated device.

I run my Herc on cheap 30W VW devices. I set it to hit 7.4V when the rod is cold, but it will hit 8V if I take a second or third hit - when the rod is already hot. I don't think think it is a big deal, but the flavor chasers are going to want want to drive their Herc at a fixed voltage of their choosing.

The Herc rod's temperature (when no thermal sink is applied) can be precisely set by varying the voltage.

btw the smok bec pro is a few months old, not a few years old.

I saw an article reviewing it that must have been improperly dated.

Ismoka eleaf istick 50w unit acquired. Fires my 7.4w KISS cart pretty nicely - can't wait to give the Herc a shot. I will probably upgrade to Persei or more likely the 8 in the future, but I couldn't justify $130-$170 on a mod PLUS $100 for Herc when the istick 50w was available for ~$50 shipped to my door in 2 days and 7.4w KISS was on sale for $12... I'll update once my Herc arrives and I can try it on this device for a bit, though that probably won't be for a while.

What donuts would you use and what would you drop them into? Any links to a DIY? I was interested in doing something similar for my concentrates. I'm looking for a good atachment for my DNA 30 box. I know Fat Daddy vapes has some for RDA use with e-liquids, or are we talking about something way different?

Only plays nice w/ my 7.4v cart for short periods, recommend against using it w/ the 7.4v KISS cart, at this time.
3.7v carts have given me no problems.

His was the one I was thinking of, but I haven't really done much research recently. Divine tribe sent me back an email about their v2 donuts saying that they are great, but had a few drawbacks that will be adressed in a new version soon, so... I figured I'd let him do the research for me ;) the v2 is all ceramic, but doesn't let you get monster rips, more or less.

To be fair, I haven't tried the v1 or 2, so I don't know how "small" of a hit it is, but he said he wants to make it bigger. Sounds good to me.

@215z mentioned, The Smok BEC Pro is fairly new. It works great with W9's Hercules SR-74x.

Yeah, wish I'd recognized that previously. Glad to hear it works with the Herc. I imagine I will have better results w/ Herc than 7.4v KISS cart (I was told the 7.4v is closer to the break point for the Ti wire, so things act a little more wacky than the 3.7v. W/ the Herc, I imagine there will be some funny business, but I won't run the risk of breaking the ceramic, like w/ the KISS Ti coil, if the voltage fluxes up a little).

I really think the SMOK BEC pro's Bluetooth is used in a genius fashion, but I already bought the damn istick, which while allowing a "vv" function, is not true vv :(

ragnorokk,
@ragnorokk sorry to hear that about the iStick, I was considering one of them too. Have you tried firing your 7.4V kiss cart down at around 7V with the istick? I have a core kit with my omicron (hence why I've been able to enjoy using the higher powered carts) and found it tends to work a bit better in my experience being slightly underpowered. Also why I'm thinking of ordering a rebuild kit from W9 tech next time and when one of my carts burns out, making a cart with I believe it would be 4 wraps and have something in between 7.4 and 3.7 on a regulated mod, but that's another story.

Also, anyone check out the Smok XPro BT50W? I stumbled across it the other day, apparently it may be upgradeable to 65W. I've been considering the different Smoke regulated mods, but I can't tell if they have an actual VV option or not (if it's proxy VV by changing the wattage). I can't figure out the answer on e-cig boards, they are too obsessed with VW lol.

The other thing I read a lot is in this "higher" voltage range, a single battery doesn't typically cut it for time usage. I know there are a couple of decently affordable double battery mods like the Sigelei 100W, the Cloupor, and a couple others (there's one that's about $80 I found the other day but it's apparently a bit rough around the edges. It was called the Vampire mod on several boards before but it changed names right before production I guess). I've considered those but I don't necessarily want to carry around that much weight in my pocket, though it is a possibility.

Realistically, I'm only concerned about it fluxing high enough to pop the wire (w9 tech support SamuraiSam said around 9v will kill it). I may try it a little lower and see how it fares. I've just been using my DrDabber Ghost on the istick, pulling out some tasty puffs and teaching my wife to load a layg cart. Planning a trip that the ghost and o.pen probably won't be coming back from, so the istick has sort of become a gargantuan replacement for the ghost battery for now.

Also, I had contemplated a tear-down of a source terra, with intent to use the donut in another cart (though possibly just move the whole skillet and donut assembly into a diff cart capsule). I don't like the filler material and glue mess that the vb11/DrDabber/source atomizers all trap their skillets in. I'm sure it makes it harder for oil to dribble down to the threading, but I like to submerge my attys in alcohol while I'm medicated enough to accidentally leave them for extended periods of time. Don't like worrying about the effects of ISO and heat on the epoxy near my heating element.

To be honest I don't see how any of these modern VW devices - coupled with a Hercules - outperform a simple $20 2x18350 mod.

The idea would be the same as it is for e-cig users (at least that's how I see it) in that you can ensure a consistent experience. Mech's used to be the biggest thing for e-cig users, but being able to power a device at theoretically the same voltage at all times seems to be the ideal now, instead of the fluctuating power of a straight mechanical due to the dropping power of a battery (not that I haven't been looking at plenty of mechs, hence my own thread lol).

For another option I recently came across (though it certainly isn't a new option) is the Maxi VStack from MadVapes. It's based off the roughstack (which from what I can tell was a pretty good reliable mod) but has a chip installed that allows you to adjust the voltage across the entire voltage range of the batteries. The biggest issue most people seemed to have too it was the button being on top so it wouldn't allow their carts to sit flush, but being I'd be using an adapter anyway, it wouldn't matter (nor have I ever worried that much about aesthetics lol).

It can handle all kinds of batteries and configurations, including stacked 18350's. I'm seriously considering purchasing one myself, along with a couple sets of 18350s and a couple 18650s to power it all up.

For the same reason people would like to buy a portable with the added function of being able to increase or decrease the temps while having a protection module . Stacking is no longer advised to be honest. Things can go wrong a lot easier than using a single 18650 IMR and rather than having one time bomb you have two.

Also in regards to the VStack, its really just a DIY device. You can source all the same components, like the "kick" for example (the voltage regulation module) from Mad Vapes and instal them in something more fashionable with a switch that has better placement and often save a few bucks. Maybe even invest a few more bucks in a better looking more practical tube.

I'm wondering what the source for the donuts are in these toppers. The E-Cig community quickly started to shun them away as they were fluctuating in ohms readings and exploding plus taking super long to ramp up. There's stuff floating around about how a shard allegedly made its way into some guys dry wall.

Check this out. It's ( I believe ) the worlds first dual 18650 Mod. It's a Denali made by Mamu. she only made 60 of them and this is #40 It variable voltage 3-6v and also shows current battery voltage, loaded or unloaded.. E-cig history might be worth a lot to a collector?
