Concentrates for Noobs - Q&A

The roots appear to have been used medicinally for at least 5,000 years or so. Google-fu with things like "cannabis root balm" or variations there of will yield a whole TON of new reading material. Anecdotally, patients usually report the root balm is more effective then other cannabis topicals for skeletal and really deep muscular pain.

This one is a commercial product that contains roots I imagine from a hemp plant though.

You can also grind it up in one of those old stone grinders and make gluten free flour for baking. Has to be clean and pure white. I've never personally tried but I have done some reading on it. Best if your hydro or areo gardening. I was always a dirt bagger.HaHa as close to nature as one can be...

Wow, this thread has developed far beyond my expectations when it started!
Thanks to all those pouring out information into these pages, the education is welcomed and well received:D

I am got a question that brings it back to the basics: When cooking with concentrates, specifically shatter, is it necessary I decarb? Is shatter decarbed in the process of making it?

Shatter by its nature is typically not de carbed. Once de carbed it tends to be more of a sap consistency. For edibles, you will want to decarb the concentrate to change the THC to THCA which is more bioavailable thAn THC. If using reclaim or ABV, that step is already done.

Fire it again. I can still find the ground.
Well, since I was the biggest derail-ER...let me see if I can act my age for a change!

I need some help from folks who know the concentrates better than I - I have only RSO in my arsenal for experience, and I looked extensively through some posts but got very confused.

I want to run a test of the "new" thing I have been hearing about - running cannabis oil through a distillation-type setup, and could use some assistance. The temp needs to be 300-400F.

In my mind, I would use my fondue pot (which can go up to 450F) containing high-heat saffron oil (which can handle over 500F before hitting its smoke point).

I thought about using something like a high-school student chemistry set, with a beaker to hold the oil sitting in the fondue pot/oil bath. And then...

That's where I am lacking. I have ideas - there seem to be various glass pipes and fittings that might work. One has an air-cooling swirly tube inside another one, etc.

I am interested in looking at this because I want to see WHY the resulting oil would be so reportedly more potent than any other. My gut actually said, and still kind of says, "Are you NUTS? You'll blow out most of the other cannabinoids and all of the terps!".

So far, the folks I have seen working on this (saw it on skunk pharm site, and Rick Simpson's website) haven't emerged with specifics - just a constant "wow this is the most awesomest ever". And they swear (being who I am, I want to see data data data) that they are preserving *more* testable terps in the final product. (Of course, I did find cases where some folks just added terps back in, but that was the exception not the rule).

I considered that if it DID have some merit, then maybe the clue was on the decarb chart we all have seen (will include it below) and many of us have used.

I originally was looking to the RIGHT side of the chart to see how LOW I could go with heat and still get a decent result. And I think the answer might be there on the chart already, but on the LEFT side.

If faster/higher heat leads to better THCA-to-THC conversion, but the drawback is that then at 70% decarb or so (according to skunk pharm) THC-to-CBN conversion begins to outpace THCA-to-THC conversion, then MAYBE there is something about taking it to the temps they are talking about with this new method - 300 to 400F - that BYPASSES that "rule" and actually allows THCA-to-THC conversion to continue outpacing THC-to-CBN conversion. Or maybe creates a ceiling for the THC-to-CBN conversion, etc. A different action on the "A" part of "THCA" at those temps that doesn't effect "THC" stripped of the "A" the same? Or something completely different.

And I want to try to know the answer to that question, and of course will offer what I find back to FC.

:-)

I saw some stuff for folks who make BHO that looked somewhat similar, though not in glass, but that's okay. And I need to not break the bank on this, since I don't know if I will run it more than once that way.

Anyway, here's the chart. And any assistance is really appreciated.

Peace and healing to us all!

I think my timings perfect for this thread. Concentrates arnt just for vaping. I just started a thread in the cooking with cannabis section, but I feel like it belongs just as much here. http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/iso-extraction-canna-caps.17805/ Its about making iso extraction canna caps. I would really appreciate for you nice folks to check it out for me. Ill be happy to answer any questions and happier to hear suggestions.

I'm sure you did more research then just my hearsay. I thought you were not supposed to injest concentrate made from ISO not saying its right just what I've heard. U can get good results from coca butter .but like I said I don't know I always wanting to learn new stuff.

Rich simpson advacates you can make rick simpson oil with either isopropal or light naptha (paint thinner) I prefer the iso and I only use 99 percent with no additional additives. It is not safe for human consumption but it all gets cooked out when I decarb.

Ok so I've been wondering i currently filter my qwet with 10 micron steel mesh with a number 1 lab filter on top would there be any improvement if I added another layer of 10 micron and another lab filter or am I over thinking it

i have wondered about if doubling up on the screens adds to the filtration. i dont know for sure, but i would think that it the screens are totally flat against each other tightly that yes it would. if there is any space between the two screen then your essentially just filtering twice with the same screen.

just curious... why do you want to go lower than 10 micron?

IM not worried about going any lower I was just unsure if adding multiple layers of filtering or doing multiple separate filtrations would be worth it or is the 10 micron enough alone

Edit: also to clarify a bit I'm currently using a 1000ml Buchner flask and 90mm Büchner funnel for vaccum filtering

So, I have this shattery QWET oil and it's kind of a PITA to get hits off it. Tried heating the dabber, but then stuff doesn't wanna stick to it. Best solution I've found so far is to just put my finger on it for a second then it's gooey enough to pull a dab off.

Anyone else have a better method of dealing with this problem? Shit looks ghetto with my fingerprints all over it.

can you snap it? like break a shard off? i have been using these handy little tools... EBAY

i use the slotted side to get dabs and the phillips side for my RDA. anyway, if your oil is shatter then you should be able to break off chunks well before it warms enough to pull it apart.

and dont sweat the fingerprints. IME they go away after some time.

Well the issue I'm having is when I try to break it at room temp, shards go flying off into the ether. Just tiny bits, but shit adds up over time.

I actually have one of those for my kayfun, the wedge shaped end would probably cut cleaner than the ball point on the dabber.

Heating the dabber usually works for me. Once there is a little oil residue on the dabber I usually break small pieces by hand (dab size) and use as needed.

I have found sitting my no-stick container on top of the cable box or blu-ray player, will after a few minutes make my material more gooey.

Thanks Michel & Diehard:D
I thought about using something in the environment, but my fingers are so handy ;)

Speaking of containers, I was thinking of ordering a dabwizard or nogoo case, currently using a jelly jar with a piece of slick sheet on the bottom. Are the containers worth buying?

Absolutely. IMO it does not matter the size, or shape (cube, cylinder, sphere), but it they really are convenient and keep sticky from getting everywhere.

I guess I'll stick to this thread for these. This is part of my Critical Kush experiment. This Kush yielded well over a pound with a ton of popcorn trim. That's what I'm using for this.
For the first time, I weighed it first to see what kind of return I get. I'm not sure if it's a good return, but this shit is fucking amazing.

As6LNxK.jpg

This is the starting material on the initial drain, just to get the liquid away from the plant matter quickly. I used 1/2 ounce of very dry material at a time. It was a total of 1 ounce used, as I drained the second 1/2 ounce into the same dish. Anyway, one ounce, LOL.

wToQVL0.jpg

This is the final strain that I use. It's fine micron stainless in layers and coffee filters under that.

I forgot to shoot pics of it after it evaporated and was still in the pyrex. I'll show that next time, maybe. Here is the end result:

aaBSKpp.jpg

So, it ended up being 3.2 grams. I don't really care about return, but I was wondering if this about average?

That's around 11.4%. I'd say that's about average or on the lower side of average. But for your material used its probably good. What solvent/tek was used?

I use all high quality nugs for my runs and my returns are in the 15%-20% range depending on strain.

I'd would be very satisfied if I were in your situation. Nice job.
